Shukri's defeat in polls not a rejection of leadership, says Perlis PAS leader

Shukri Ramli, the Perlis PAS chief and menteri besar, was defeated in the race for Arau division chief last Saturday. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Shukri Ramli need not resign as Perlis menteri besar despite losing in the Arau PAS division elections last Saturday, says a state party leader. Perlis PAS committee member Ridzuan Hashim attributed the loss to PAS's political maturity, not a rejection of Shukri's leadership in the state government. 'Losing in a party election does not mean one must resign,' the Guar Sanji assemblyman told FMT. 'It just means that he no longer holds responsibilities at the party level and can focus fully on leading the state government.' Ridzuan, the Arau PAS deputy chief, also denied any internal conflict in the division, saying ties among local leaders remained strong and harmonious. He urged outsiders not to stir up tensions or demand Shukri's resignation. 'We thank rival parties for their concern about PAS's internal affairs, but let us handle our own household matters,' he said. Shukri, the Sanglang assemblyman, lost to incumbent Solahudin Azmi who retained the Arau leadership post with 128 votes against Shukri's 43. On Monday, Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar claimed that Shukri's defeat signalled a loss of confidence in his leadership among PAS grassroots members. Shukri has faced repeated calls to resign, starting in November 2023 when Kuala Perlis assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah accused the menteri besar of ignoring Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin's nomination for him (Abu Bakar) to become a state executive councillor as part of Perikatan Nasional's second year in power. Abu Bakar was later made the exco for tourism, arts, culture, and rural development in a state Cabinet reshuffle. Resignation rumours resurfaced in August last year, although Shukri dismissed them at the time as 'naughty political gossip'.

Perlis PAS chief Shukri fails in bid to head Arau division

Shukri Ramli, the Perlis PAS chief and menteri besar, was defeated in the election for the divisional leader's post. PETALING JAYA : Perlis PAS chief and menteri besar Shukri Ramli failed in his bid to become the Arau commissioner at the party's divisional elections today. Shukri, who is Sanglang assemblyman, failed to unseat incumbent Solahudin Azmi, who won by 128 votes to Shukri's 43, Sinar Harian reported. Separately, Ruselee Eizan who is the speaker of the Perak state assembly, failed to defend his seat when he lost to state executive councillor Ridzuan Hashim. Ridzuan, who is Guar Sanji assemblyman, won 135 votes, while Ruselee only secured 34. The vice division chief's post was however retained by its incumbent, Yusairi Mansor with 130 votes, while his challenger, executive councillor Razali Saad won 39 votes. Divisional chief Solahudin was later quoted as saying that the defeat of several state leaders should not be perceived as a sign of rejection. 'Rather it's a norm in PAS. The fact that there was competition in this election proves that PAS practises genuine grassroots democracy,' he said, according to the New Straits Times.

Perlis MB loses in bid for Arau Pas chief post

ARAU: The Pas Arau division polls delivered several surprises as Menteri Besar Shukri Ramli failed in his bid to unseat incumbent Solahudin Azmi from the division chief position. Two state executive councillors in Shukri's state administration also failed in the race for the deputy division chief and vice chief positions. The biggest shock came with the defeat of Shukri, who is also the state Pas commissioner in a straight fight with Solahudin Azmi. He garnered only 43 votes, while Solahudin secured 128 votes. For the deputy division chief position, the state Youth and Sports Committee chairman, Mohd Ridzuan Hashim, who is also Guar Sanji asemblyman, won comfortably with 135 votes, defeating the incumbent and current Perlis state State Assembly speaker, Rus'ele Eizan, who received just 34 votes. In the contest for vice division chief position, the state Agriculture, Plantations and Consumer Affairs Commitee chairman Razali Saad, was defeated after receiving only 39 votes compared to the incumbent Mohd Yusairi Mansor, who won with 130 votes. The Arau Pas division held its annual general meeting today, with participation from 173 delegates representing 60 branches. In his speech, Solahudin expressed gratitude for being re-elected to the position. "This outcome reflects the delegates' confidence in the current leadership team, and it does not diminish the significant contributions of state leaders in steering the administration based on Islamic principles and collective leadership. "Losing in this election doesn't imply a rejection of the state government's leadership, but rather it's a normal process within Pas' mature political culture. "The fact that there was competition in this election proves that Pas practises genuine grassroots democracy," he said. He added that the defeat of several state leaders should not be interpreted as a sign of rejection. "Instead, it offers an opportunity to further strengthen each leader's role within the leadership ranks. "What's more important is that those elected must now shoulder the great responsibility of leading the community," he added. As for the Kangar Pas division, its annual general meeting is scheduled for June 28, where a contest is expected between the incumbent chief, Yussaine Yahya, and Senator Baharudin Ahmad. Meanwhile, in Padang Besar, the upcoming annual meeting on June 22 is also drawing attention as the incumbent chief, Saad Seman will be challenged by fellow state Exco member Muhammad Azmir Azizan.
