Dadar Kabutarkhana row: Mumbai man feeds pigeons on car roof, booked; Jain monk warns of hunger strike

Mahendra Sanklecha, a Lalbaug resident, was booked for feeding pigeons near Dadar Kabutarkhana. A BMC supervisor filed a complaint after seeing Sanklecha's actions. Sanklecha allegedly placed a grain-filled tray on his car. MUMBAI: Shivaji Park police on Saturday booked a 55-year-old Lalbaug resident, Mahendra Sanklecha, for allegedly feeding pigeons by placing a grain-filled tray on his car's roof near Dadar Kabutarkhana. While police have seized the car, they issued a notice to Sanklecha asking him to join the investigation. The action came after Sandesh Matkar, a junior supervisor at BMC's G-North ward, lodged a police complaint stating that on Saturday, around 7.30am, Sanklecha drove to Dadar Kabutarkhana in his car and placed the grain-filled tray for pigeons. The complainant told police that he received a video clip in which Sanklecha said he would bring 12 more cars to feed pigeons there when locals raised objections. Matkar submitted the car's registration number to police who tracked down Sanklecha and issued him a notice. He was booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 270 (public nuisance), and 271 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life). Municipal crackdown on pigeon feeding remains inconsistent across Mumbai

M umbai: The municipal corporation's drive to curb unregulated pigeon feeding appears inconsistent, with some spots facing strict enforcement while others remain unchecked. TOI visited three of these sites in the city on Friday, especially in the wake of the massive public protest at Dadar Kabutarkhana last week. At GPO Corner on Mint Road, locals said rampant feeding continues unabated as neither BMC staff nor police personnel are deployed to monitor the area. The Kabutarkhana remains uncovered, with citizens openly scattering grains. Locals and shopkeepers warned that the growing pigeon population is raising health risks from droppings and airborne infections, urging BMC to post staff for regular surveillance, cover feeding zones, and fine violators. TOI also saw a man throwing pigeon feed. In sharp contrast, Dadar Kabutarkhana is under tight control with heavy police presence and active civic monitoring. A large tarpaulin has been installed to deter birds, and fines are being imposed on those caught feeding them. While authorities hail the clampdown, local shopkeepers complain that the police bandobast and movement restrictions are hurting festive season business. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo "There are civic staff with penalty books, and if they argue over payment of penalty, we also ask the police to intervene," said a local resident. They allege a lack of consistent enforcement, with neither civic nor police presence at most times, and warn of unsanitary conditions and potential disease outbreaks. Residents said there is a need for a uniform, sustained crackdown to prevent the city's anti-pigeon feeding drive from becoming patchy and ineffective.
