Michigan author signing copies of Grand Hotel-set thriller on Mackinac Island on May 31

The annual Mackinac Policy Conference, being held this week, is one of the state of Michigan's most important and revered events, drawing the governor, mayors, county executives, business leaders, arts professionals and media figures for a days-long discussion about the present and future of Michigan's economy. The conference also provides the setting for "The Grand Secret," an intriguing murder thriller dreamed up by Michigan author Ed McKenna. In his 2023 tale, a high-profile auto executive is murdered at Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel, and a man framed for the crime goes on the run for his life. McKenna, a South Lyon resident and Michigan State University alum, will be on the island this weekend to sign copies of his book. The author, who'd always wanted to write a book, adhered to the age-old 'write what you know' approach while creating "The Grand Secret." Regional readers will fondly recognize in the thriller's pages references to Hamtramck, the Cadillac plant, the Renaissance Center, Lafayette Coney Island, Wyandotte, Chene Park, Belle Isle and more. More: Politicians and business leaders gather for annual Mackinac Policy Conference More: 7 questions for Michigan's chief growth officer as state population edges up 'I met my wife on Mackinac Island,' McKenna said. 'My daughter's birthday is the same as the Grand Hotel — July 10. My last name, McKenna, is the same as Jane Seymour's was in the movie 'Somewhere in Time,' which was filmed at the Grand Hotel, and I've served as a tour guide up on Mackinac Island. "I thought: The Grand Hotel is an icon that people from all over the world come to experience. Wouldn't it be interesting if a big event was being held at the Grand Hotel, and during the course of this event, a major character is murdered? And from that premise came the birth of 'The Grand Secret.'' McKenna, a Michigan resident since early childhood, grew up in Taylor. '(I) still have a lot of friends in the Downriver area,' he said. 'Spent many summer days traipsing through the fields on bikes, catching crayfish, snakes, tadpoles and turtles. We'd catch small catfish in coffee cans. Riding motorcycles through the fields and the woods. I was fortunate and had a great experience growing up in Taylor. Now, I travel all throughout Michigan for my job. I'm a fan for all the sports teams. Love the resort areas, the fishing, the lakes, the camping. Michigan is my home.' He said he has two hopes for the book. 'My hope,' he said, 'is that someone will read the first page, which will draw them in, leading them to turn to another page, and then to another, pulling them all the way through, where they won't want to put it down. If I've been able to do that, then I feel proud that I've been able to put something together that's interesting and entertaining enough and I've done my job as a writer and a storyteller. And maybe folks were able to learn a little something along the way that they didn't know before they read my book. 'If it is successful, I hope it will make other people from around the country aware of what a jewel of a state we have. I hope it will foster their desire to want to come here and taste Michigan for themselves. I hope it makes businesses want to come here and set up shop. I hope people want to make Michigan their vacation of choice. And their home of choice. And I hope through all of this that this book can make a difference and be an added cog in the wheel to ratchet up the economy here and nationally.' He also confessed that he thinks the book would make a great movie — in case Hollywood is paying attention. 'All I ask is that you read the first four pages,' he said. 'If that doesn't pull you through to turn to the next page, and then to the next one, and so on, and so on, then this book isn't meant for you. But I think in the end, you'll be glad you did.' On May 31, McKenna will be signing his books at Island Bookstore on Mackinac Island from 1 to 3 p.m. The bookstore is at 7372 Main St. 'The Grand Secret' is also available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other retailers. Outlander fans must watch this hearbreaking Netflix film with Game of Thrones star

Outlander fans are urged to watch the time travel romance film on Netflix. With a long time to wait before Outlander season 8, many fans are desperate for something to fill the void. Luckily, Netflix is streaming a movie that's filled with plenty of romance and drama, as well as time travel. The movie came out in 2009 and follows an epic love story to rival Outlander's central romance with Jamie and Claire Fraser. ‌ One fan critiqued IMDb: "At the heart of this film is a love story and the complexities that people bring to their relationships. ‌ 'What I liked most was its metaphorical allusion to the distance in relationships and how the important people in our lives stay with us even after they are gone." A second wrote: "I was a massive fan of the book and had been following the production of this movie for a long time anticipating the release date. I had set my expectations pretty low so as to not be disappointed and decided to just enjoy the film for what it was. "I was overjoyed by how true to the book the film stayed, only varying in a few unimportant places, the film dared to be as heart breaking and sad as the book and did not feel the need to justify the logistics of the time travel instead choosing to summarise it in the first scene sic].' ‌ A third penned: "I recommend anyone looking for a unique love story to see this film. Paying homage to memorable classic such as; "Somewhere in Time" and "It's a Wonderful Life,"it will easily be something that should find a home in your living room shelves. "It emits a cinematic glow that hasn't been seen in years while cleverly conveying an educational message; 'Never let go of the one you love, and cherish him/her always'." The Time Traveler's Wife follows Chicago librarian Henry DeTamble (Eric Bana), who possessed the genetic ability allowing him to time travel. ‌ However, he wasn't in control of his power, which proved a problem for his wife Clare Abshire (Rachel McAdams). Henry disappear and randomly appear at different points in Clare's life. The movie took its cue from the beloved 2003 romantic novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger. ‌ Band of Brothers and Sex And The City star Ron Livingston and Arliss Howard of Full Metal Jacket fame also featured in the film. The Time Traveler's Wife went on to get the small screen treatment by HBO in 2022, penned by former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat. The TV series, starring The Gentlemen's Theo James and Game of Thrones and The Good Fight's Rose Leslie, was sadly cancelled after one season. Despite a passionate campaign to save the show, The Time Traveler's Wife didn't get a renewal. There's been a subsequent stage musical adapted from the book.

Iron Maiden Is In The Middle Of A Huge Comeback On The Charts

Iron Maiden's Powerslave and Somewhere in Time return to four U.K. charts each, with sales and vinyl ... More reissues fueling the comeback of both '80s classics. Iron Maiden (v.l. Adrian Smith, Nicko McBrain, Bruce Dickinson, Steve Harris, Dave Murray) on 20.08.1986 in Bochum. (Photo by Fryderyk Gabowicz/picture alliance via Getty Images) Iron Maiden helped shape the sound of heavy metal decades ago, and while many of its peers from that era have long since broken up or stopped making music, the British rock band is far from done. The legendary act still produces new work, and it also regularly sees older efforts be rediscovered by fans, both new and longtime. That's exactly what's happening again this week in the United Kingdom, where two classic albums from Iron Maiden's discography surge back onto the charts. Iron Maiden pushes both Powerslave and Somewhere in Time to a number of U.K. charts. Both full-lengths are back on four different tallies, which is a major comeback. For a group that's been around for more than 40 years, appearing on multiple lists at once with not one but a pair of decades-old titles is a huge accomplishment — one that most artists from that era can only dream of. Between the two comeback collections, Powerslave is the better performer. The set manages to climb back into the top 10 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, landing right at No. 10. The same effort also earns top 40 placements on two other rosters – the Official Vinyl Albums list, where it comes in at No. 17, and the Official Physical Albums chart, where it returns at No. 49. While just shy of a top 40 appearance, Powerslave does manage to reenter at No. 45 on the Official Albums Sales chart. Somewhere in Time isn't quite as successful as Powerslave, but it still manages to settle on four rankings this week – and it's living inside the top 40 on two of them. The project returns to the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart at No. 14, and reappears on the Official Vinyl Albums list at No. 34. The heavy metal offering falls just outside that range on the remaining two tallies on which it can be found presently, settling at No. 68 on the Official Physical Albums ranking and No. 73 on the Official Albums Sales chart. Looking back historically, Powerslave has enjoyed greater overall chart success than Somewhere in Time. The earlier release between the two has reached the top 10 on all four of the charts it's back on this frame. It even peaked as high as No. 2 on both the Rock & Metal and Vinyl Albums lists. Somewhere in Time should also be noted for its healthy performances across a number of rankings, though it's only ever broken into the top 10 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart and peaked inside the top 40 on the vinyl ranking. The set missed that mark on both the physical and albums sales lists. These comebacks appear to be largely driven by recent sales and special offers. Both Powerslave and Somewhere in Time were discounted and offered in collectible vinyl editions on Amazon U.K., which may have prompted fans to snap them up in large enough numbers to turn them into chart successes once more. Powerslave originally dropped in September 1984 and marked Iron Maiden's fifth full-length studio effort. Somewhere in Time followed two years later in 1986 as the band's sixth. Both albums were commercial hits upon arrival, with the former reaching No. 2 and the latter peaking at No. 3 on the U.K. Albums chart, just barely missing out on being the biggest projects in that nation for a time.

Jane Seymour says 'there's no slowing down' as she turns 74: 'I feel I'm doing my best work now. Why retire?'

Jane Seymour turns 74 on Saturday, and the Somewhere in Time star is having the time of her life. 'I feel I'm doing my best work now,' Seymour told Yahoo Entertainment at AARP's Movies for Grownups Awards on Feb. 8. 'Why retire? I'm producing, I'm writing, painting and designing as I always do.' 'There's no slowing down,' says Seymour, who is currently producing and starring in BBC America's Harry Wild. 'If anything, I'm not quite sure how I'm gonna get everything done! It's all happening at once.' See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. By signing up, you agree to our Terms and Privacy Policy. The Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman star said she's currently 'being offered lots of movies.' 'Whoever thought I'd have that in my 70s?' she said. Seymour said she feels honored 'to tell the stories of my generation.' 'I actually was thinking about it seriously, because I'm a baby boomer. My parents survived World War II,' she said. 'They met after the war, and they both kind of put the horrors behind, and they met one another and they started a family. So, I am part of a generation of new hope after absolute indescribable horror and hatred and a global war. So we are a kind of very special group, us baby boomers.' Seymour added how she is 'just so grateful to be healthy and well.' 'You know, we are not just little old ladies sitting around waiting until it's over," she said. In fact, she's booked and busy. On Monday night, Seymour opened the Nardos Fall 2025 show at New York Fashion Week, which was held at the Plaza Hotel. While not every person in their 70s can strut down a catwalk or star in a movie to keep feeling young, Seymour had one important tip to share. 'If I can inspire that little fire in someone who's sitting at home going, 'Oh, what am I gonna do with my life?' Get up and do something for someone else. You know, that's how you have a good life,' she told Yahoo. 'If you get out of your own pity party and see someone else that needs some help, see if you can cheer them up or do something.'
