Blue Bloods' Boston Blue confirms major Hollywood star will replace Tom Selleck
Blue Bloods spin-off Boston Blue has confirmed who will be playing the grandfather of Sonequa Martin-Green's Detective Lena Silver. Boston Blue has unveiled its new Frank Reagan, with the Blue Bloods spin-off set to debut in late 2025. While Tom Selleck was a key figure in CBS' Blue Bloods as the Reagan family patriarch Frank Reagan, there's been no word on whether he'll make an appearance in Boston Blue. When Danny Reagan (portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg) joins the Boston PD, he'll be teamed up with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), who also hails from a distinguished police family. At the helm of that family is Reverend Peters, described as "a renowned pastor of a historic Baptist church in Boston", who is an "open-minded, welcoming man that is comfortable in all traditions". The actor stepping into the role of Reverend Peters, familiar to film buffs, has now been disclosed. Boston Blue's Reverend Peters will be played by actor Ernie Hudson. He's best known for his roles as Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters series and McDonald in Sandra Bullock's Miss Congeniality. Hudson's other credits include LA's Finest, Quantum Leap, The Family Business, The Crow and The Basketball Diaries. Much like Magnum PI star Tom Selleck's fatherly role as Frank Reagan, Hudson's pastor is anticipated to take on a similar role prior to Blue Bloods' cancellation after 14 seasons. CBS has unveiled more about the Silver family tree, revealing that Reverend Peters is the father of Boston's District Attorney Mae Silver and grandfather to Superintendent Ashley Silver, rookie officer Isaac Silver and Detective Lena Silver. To date, apart from Reverend Peters, the only member of the Silver family who has been cast is The Walking Dead actress Sonequa Martin-Green, who will play Lena. There's no official release date for Boston Blue as yet. However, it's expected to premiere in the autumn of 2025 and when it does, the spin-off will take over the Friday 10pm slot currently occupied by Blue Bloods. Blue Bloods is available to watch on CBS.

‘Law & Order' and ‘SVU' Renewed at NBC
The longest-running drama in American primetime history will continue to add to its record. The show that spawned it — and the second longest-running drama ever — is also set to return. NBC has renewed Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order for the 2025-26 season. SVU will go into its 27th season in the fall, and the L&O mothership will enter its 25th season. Between them, the two shows will have 1,096 episodes to their credit at the end of this season. More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Animal Control' and 'Going Dutch' Comedies Renewed at Fox Sonequa Martin-Green Boards CBS' 'Boston Blue' 'Yellowstone'-verse Expands to CBS With 'Marshals' Spinoff on 2025-26 Schedule The Law & Order renewals follow on the heels of NBC renewing all three of its Chicago series. The pickups assure that the two franchises — which come from mega-producer Dick Wolf's Wolf Entertainment and Universal TV — will remain intact on NBC next season as the broadcaster likely reduces its scripted footprint to make room for primetime NBA telecasts. (The third current Law & Order series, Organized Crime, now streams on Peacock and is midway through its fifth season.) Both shows are still reliable audience draws for NBC, with SVU averaging about 5.9 million viewers and Law & Order about 5.2 million in Nielsen's seven-day linear ratings — and significantly more on streaming. NBC says streaming of L&O on Peacock has more than doubled this season (though it doesn't provide detailed numbers) vs. 2023-24. SVU ranks 21st among all network shows in Nielsen's 35-day, all-platform rankings for the season with 8.7 million viewers. NBC says 44 million people have watched at least a little of the two shows this season. SVU alum Michele Fazekas, who was a writer and producer on the series from 2001-06, is set to take over as showrunner next season. The current season's executive producers are Wolf, David Graziano, Julie Martin, series lead Mariska Hargitay, Norberto Barba, Kenneth Brown and Peter Jankowski. Season 24 of Law & Order is executive produced by Wolf, Rick Eid, Pamela Wechsler, Alex Hall and Jankowski. My Dead Friend Zoe Review: Military PTSD Dramedy Elevated by Sonequa Martin-Green
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – My Dead Friend Zoe is a dramedy with a little more drama than comedy that centers on the issues of military servicemembers' struggles with PTSD, and it would risk becoming a drama overwhelmed by its advocacy without the stand-out performance by Sonequa Martin-Green. Co-written and directed by Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, who is a US Army combat veteran, My Dead Friend Zoe is inspired by his autobiography, and the film has partnered with national nonprofits to raise awareness about veterans' mental health. The story centers on Martin-Green's character, Merit, a servicemember who returns from the war in Afghanistan with PTSD. Literally haunting her is Natalie Morales's character, Zoe, a fellow servicemember who has died. In addition to reckoning with the circumstances of Zoe's death, Merit must also care for her aging grandfather (Ed Harris) who has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Sonequa Martin-Green carries My Dead Friend Zoe. As fans of Star Trek: Discovery know, she has an easy smile that also reveals her character's inner life, which is often filled with contradictions and different levels of emotional depth. Martin-Green delivers a performance honed with some deep psychology and background work that's not on the page, which had to have been developed in her preparation. One scene with her grandfather sees her adopt a military posture out of habit even though she's no longer part of the service, and the small moments of reaction shots reveal a full fleshed-out character. It's masterful work that saves the movie from melodrama. That melodrama risks pushing My Dead Friend Zoe into an 'issue movie,' a film that advocates for an issue rather than unfolding a story organically. This is particularly the case during the third act reveal. The plot's structure hides the circumstances around Zoe's death until the third act, and there are long sections when it feels like the film is being too evasive. What's also true is that the film spins its wheels during the second act because it's biding its time until it can reveal to the audience something all the characters already know. Structurally speaking, this keeps the audience at a distance. The film's direct advocacy occurs most prominently in post-credits scenes and in statistics right before the credits. It is only Martin-Green that keeps the issue from overwhelming the drama, as she anchors the film to the character's journey and lets the story speak for itself. Morales gives a strong supporting performance, but sadly, she's not given much to do aside from deliver some snarky lines and be a sounding board for Martin-Green's character in the movie's tearful conclusion. PTSD and more broadly speaking, mental health advocacy is an important issue, and My Dead Friend Zoe makes for some successful advocacy work. However, it is Sonequa Martin-Green who makes it a good movie and a compelling character drama. Eyewitness News. Everywhere you are. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
