Must-see Twin Cities concerts this week: Justin Timberlake, FINNEAS, Nona Invie
It's time to brave the cold and see some good music.
Here are the concerts and perofrmances around the Twin Cities that you should catch this week.
Monday, Feb. 24 at Xcel Energy Center
Justin Timberlake's 2024 record Everything I Thought It Was made a splash like an Olympic diver. It was largely glossed over in the wake of poor reviews and no single that took off. He nonetheless remains the singer of "SexyBack" and knows how to wow fans on an arena level.
Timberlake was originally scheduled to play St. Paul on Halloween, but postponed a handful of shows due to bronchitis and laryngitis. Now, he's back and set lists for other dates on the tour suggest there will be a hearty helping of music from Everything I Thought It Was. But he's still leaving plenty of space for "Cry Me a River" and that song from Smurfs.
Monday, Feb. 24 at Turf Club
Comeback Kid — the Winnipeg-formed hardcore band that is fittingly named after a hockey headline — is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Wake the Dead, their blistering sophomore album packed with big breakdowns and chant-along choruses. It'll probably get a little rowdy. Cancer Bats, ORTHODOX, and Daisycutter open.
Monday, Feb. 24 at The Dakota
The trio of distinctively Hawaiian musicians — slack-key guitarists George Kahumoku Jr. and Sonny Lim with ukulelist Sonny Lim — bring their genre mastery to the Dakota this week. Their individual list of accomplishments is massive, including Grammys and honors from Hawaiian arts organizations.
Thursday, Feb. 27 at The Fillmore
FINNEAS, the stage name of Finneas O'Connell, collaborator and brother of Billie eilish, will take the spotlight to himself on Thursday. Despite winning 10 Grammys for his work with Eilish and being nominated for Best New Artist for his solo work (in addition to Oscar and Golden Globe wins), his collaborative work often overshadows his solo efforts.
He's touring behind last year's For Cryin' Out Loud, his second full-length studio album.
Friday, Feb. 28 at Berlin
Nona Invie, formerly of Dark Dark Dark and RONiiA, will host the first of two album release shows for their upcoming record Self-soothing. Friday's show is a 60-minute performance of the complete album. They'll be accompanied by a choir featuring Channy Leaneagh (Poliça), Aby Wolf (Champagne Confetti), and Nadia Hulett (NADINE).
Invie previewed the record with the release "Love Is Like That" recently. It's a sparse song that makes space for their sweeping vocals over ambient waves and minimalistic piano. The Feb. 28 show at Berlin is sold out, but tickets remain for the second show on March 6, also at Berlin.
Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Mar. 1 at Turf Club
Is there a busier band in the Americana/jam world than Pert Near Sandstone? They're not just playing constantly. They're making events happening. The hosts and curators of the summertime Blue Ox Music Festival are hosting their annual, two-day Winter String Band Gathering at the Turf Club. It'll have the main stage rolling as well as performances down in the Clown Lounge. (There will also be an afterparty with sets from Barefoot Bluegrass and Potluck String Band at the Midway Slaoon.)
On Friday, Pert will be joined by Dig Deep and Katey Bellville. The next night, they'll have Bronwyn Keith-Hynes and Feeding Leroy joining in the on Monday, Feb. 24:
