Must-see Twin Cities concerts this week: Justin Timberlake, FINNEAS, Nona Invie
It's time to brave the cold and see some good music.
Here are the concerts and perofrmances around the Twin Cities that you should catch this week.
Monday, Feb. 24 at Xcel Energy Center
Justin Timberlake's 2024 record Everything I Thought It Was made a splash like an Olympic diver. It was largely glossed over in the wake of poor reviews and no single that took off. He nonetheless remains the singer of "SexyBack" and knows how to wow fans on an arena level.
Timberlake was originally scheduled to play St. Paul on Halloween, but postponed a handful of shows due to bronchitis and laryngitis. Now, he's back and set lists for other dates on the tour suggest there will be a hearty helping of music from Everything I Thought It Was. But he's still leaving plenty of space for "Cry Me a River" and that song from Smurfs.
Monday, Feb. 24 at Turf Club
Comeback Kid — the Winnipeg-formed hardcore band that is fittingly named after a hockey headline — is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Wake the Dead, their blistering sophomore album packed with big breakdowns and chant-along choruses. It'll probably get a little rowdy. Cancer Bats, ORTHODOX, and Daisycutter open.
Monday, Feb. 24 at The Dakota
The trio of distinctively Hawaiian musicians — slack-key guitarists George Kahumoku Jr. and Sonny Lim with ukulelist Sonny Lim — bring their genre mastery to the Dakota this week. Their individual list of accomplishments is massive, including Grammys and honors from Hawaiian arts organizations.
Thursday, Feb. 27 at The Fillmore
FINNEAS, the stage name of Finneas O'Connell, collaborator and brother of Billie eilish, will take the spotlight to himself on Thursday. Despite winning 10 Grammys for his work with Eilish and being nominated for Best New Artist for his solo work (in addition to Oscar and Golden Globe wins), his collaborative work often overshadows his solo efforts.
He's touring behind last year's For Cryin' Out Loud, his second full-length studio album.
Friday, Feb. 28 at Berlin
Nona Invie, formerly of Dark Dark Dark and RONiiA, will host the first of two album release shows for their upcoming record Self-soothing. Friday's show is a 60-minute performance of the complete album. They'll be accompanied by a choir featuring Channy Leaneagh (Poliça), Aby Wolf (Champagne Confetti), and Nadia Hulett (NADINE).
Invie previewed the record with the release "Love Is Like That" recently. It's a sparse song that makes space for their sweeping vocals over ambient waves and minimalistic piano. The Feb. 28 show at Berlin is sold out, but tickets remain for the second show on March 6, also at Berlin.
Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Mar. 1 at Turf Club
Is there a busier band in the Americana/jam world than Pert Near Sandstone? They're not just playing constantly. They're making events happening. The hosts and curators of the summertime Blue Ox Music Festival are hosting their annual, two-day Winter String Band Gathering at the Turf Club. It'll have the main stage rolling as well as performances down in the Clown Lounge. (There will also be an afterparty with sets from Barefoot Bluegrass and Potluck String Band at the Midway Slaoon.)
On Friday, Pert will be joined by Dig Deep and Katey Bellville. The next night, they'll have Bronwyn Keith-Hynes and Feeding Leroy joining in the fun.Concerts on Monday, Feb. 24:

Paraguayan Olympian Luana Alonso fires back at country's officials year after allegedly creating ‘inappropriate atmosphere' amid Olympic Village exit
Paraguayan Olympic swimmer Luana Alonso shot back at her country's claims she was kicked out of the Olympic Village last year for creating an inappropriate environment, slamming it as a lie and 'false rumors.' Alonso, 21, competed for her native Paraguay in the women's 100m Butterfly at the 2024 Summer Games, but failed to reach the semifinals. During her time in France, Alonso was accused of creating an 'inappropriate atmosphere,' forcing the Paraguayan Olympic Committee to remove her from the other athletes. Facebook /Luana Alonso She had waited 11 months to address the situation. 'Let me make this clear: I left the Olympic Village on my own,' Alonso wrote on her Instagram Stories on Wednesday. Advertisement The two-time Olympian reportedly became problematic after she failed to make it out of the heat races and took a day trip to Disneyland Paris instead of supporting her compatriots, angering the country's Olympic officials. She documented her trip to the theme park on social media, posing for a picture wearing Mickey Mouse ears and holding a champagne flute. 'Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay,' Larissa Schaerer, the head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, said in a statement published by The Sun at the time. 6 Alonso points at the Olympic Rings hanging on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, during the 2024 Olympics. Facebook /Luana Alonso Advertisement Alonso fired back, saying the accusations were not true. 'The Paraguayan Olympic team claimed I created an 'inappropriate environment simply because I decided I didn't want to swim anymore,' she said. 'They tried to take my accreditation away, but that's not something they had the right to do. I chose not to hand it over and apparently that was 'inappropriate' to them.' Her dress style, which featured 'skinny clothing' and socializing with athletes, was also noted as a distraction during her stay at the Olympic Village in Seine-Saint-Denis. She made headlines before the start of the Paris Games when she debuted a new tattoo on her hips of the five Olympic rings. Facebook /Luana Alonso After she was removed from the Olympic Village, Alonso reportedly checked into a Parisian hotel and visited high-end stores and restaurants. The Southern Methodist University alum claimed Paraguayan swimming officials had pleaded for her to return to the pool for the Pan American Junior Games being held in the country's capital, Asunción, in August. 'If I had been treated with basic respect, maybe I wouldn't have stepped away,' she added. Alonso says she always had 'given everything' for her country but when she stood up for herself it was viewed as a problem. The two-time Olympian threatened to sue news outlets who ran stories about the accusations brought against her by the Paraguayan Olympic Committee. Advertisement 'I'm seriously considering legal action against the magazines and media outlets spreading false rumors like that I was expelled from the Olympic Village. Really? Who came up with that nonsense? Well that it's not true,' she wrote. Alonso also teased that she would be releasing a video to better explain her thinking. 'Seriously this (sic) lies are wild and affecting my life and that's why I decided I'm keeping my life lowkey,' she said. Alonso retired from competitive swimming shortly after the Olympics concluded, but made a sudden about-face weeks later when she returned to training. 'But I don't know if I will be back to competitive swimming.'

British canoeist forced to decide between Olympic dream and his ‘spicy' OnlyFans page
Canoeist Kurts Adams Rozentals has a decision to make — his OnlyFans or the Olympics. The British athlete was reportedly suspended last month by governing body Paddle UK, and he suspects it has something to do with his racy activity online. Advertisement 'I have been posting videos (on Instagram) that are consciously made to be edgy in order to drive conversions to my 'spicy content page' (on OnlyFans), to fund this ultimate dream of going to the Olympics,' Rozentals said in an interview with BBC Sport. Kurts Adams Rozentals, who competes in the individual canoe slalom, was suspended in April by governing body Paddle UK following 'allegations' about his posts on social media. Instagram/@kurtsadams Paddle UK removed Rozentals from its World Class Programme pending an investigation Instagram/@kurtsadams Rozentals was removed from the World Class Programme, an initiative for potential Olympic athletes, by Paddle UK pending investigation, leaving his canoeing dreams up in the air. 'I kind of froze and I couldn't believe the words I was hearing because this is what I put my life into this is everything I do,' Rozentals told the outlet of the moment he heard the news. Advertisement 'My personality at this point, my identity, is sport and I want to be a professional athlete chasing my Olympic dream.' BBC Sport reported Rozentals 'has more than 10,000 'likes' on the platform and 'has posted 39 videos and over 100 photos' earning more than '£100,000 (about $135,000) since creating his OnlyFans account in January.' 'This is the hardest decision that I've ever faced in my life,' Rozentals said. 'I came to the realization about why I started doing this last winter after years of struggle, living on the edge, my mum working 90 hours-a-week, having bailiffs at the door. Rozentals created his OnlyFans to help fund his training. Instagram/@kurtsadams 'I'm going to find a way where we don't have to struggle, where my mum can enjoy her life and I'm able to put everything into this sport because when you're thinking about how to pay the rent this month and you're standing at the start line, that's not very conducive (to performing well).' Advertisement As a UK Paddle Programme athlete, Rozentals had been receiving £16,000 a year — around $21,600 — but said that's nowhere near enough to sustain himself. 'I don't know how much you need but it's certainly not £16,000,' said Rozentals. 'When you have to cover rent, travel, food… and most athletes who train full-time are all living in London. Rozentals posts videos and pictures on his Instagram account to drive viewers towards the content. Instagram/@kurtsadams 'They're very fortunate to have parent backing — I wasn't. I never had the ability to move to London because of financial struggles so I was always doing the travel from the East Midlands, where I live, to London, back-and-forth, back-and-forth.'

Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds become co-owners of Australia SailGP team
Hugh Jackman (L) and Ryan Reynolds (R) have become co-owners of Australia's SailGP team (Cindy Ord) Hollywood stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds became co-owners of Australia's three-times champion SailGP team on Friday, saying they were "incredibly excited". The actors, who are close friends, join Olympic gold medallist and driver Tom Slingsby at the helm of a team which was rebranded the "Flying Roos". Advertisement "We're incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure," the Australian Jackman and Canadian-American Reynolds said in a statement. "Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country, as well as being an avid fan of sailing. "He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. Apologies in advance to Australia." Jackman and Reynolds starred together last year in the blockbuster movie "Deadpool & Wolverine". Reynolds also owns Welsh football club Wrexham along with fellow actor Rob McElhenney. SailGP stages regattas close to shore with identical high-performance, foiling, multi-hull boats that can reach speeds of 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph). Advertisement It was launched in 2019 by American billionaire Larry Ellison and champion New Zealand yachtsman Russell Coutts. Australia, skippered by Slingsby, have won three of the four editions so far. "This is an incredible milestone for us and for our sport, having global icons Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds come on board as co-owners of our team," said Slingsby. "They bring unmatched star power, a love for storytelling and a sharp sense of humour that fits perfectly with our team." The new-look team will make its debut this weekend in New York, the sixth leg of the season. mp/pst
