Rapper Soulja Boy Arrested In LA Hours After 35th Birthday Bash

Soulja Boy's recent arrest came just four months after a jury ordered him to pay $4 million to his former assistant, who had accused him of sexual assault in 2021. Rapper DeAndre Cortez Way, best known by his stage name Soulja Boy, was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on Sunday, August 3. According to multiple reports, the 35-year-old rapper was arrested at around 2:50 AM after the police stopped a car he was riding near Melrose and Genesse. Soulja was a passenger in that vehicle. During the traffic stop, the officers found a firearm inside the car, as reported by TMZ. He was booked on suspicion of illegally possessing a gun. Online inmate information further revealed that Soulja was officially booked under a felony charge at 6:18 AM that day. However, it still remains unclear as to why the traffic stop was made in the first place. Neither the LAPD nor the rapper's team has shared any official statement on the arrest. Soulja Boy Was Arrested Hours After He Celebrated His 35th Birthday Soulja was arrested merely hours after he celebrated his 35th birthday with his dear ones at a nightclub in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 2. He shared glimpses of the celebrations on his Instagram account. He had another reason to celebrate, as earlier that day, he released new music during a Twitch stream. It was his first release after Soulja dropped his album, The Influence, in February this year. Soulja Boy Was Accused Of Sexual Assault And Abuse By His Former Assistant The 35-year-old rapper's recent arrest came just four months after he lost a legal case. In April, Soulja was ordered by a California jury to pay $4 million to his former assistant, who had accused him of sexual assault and abuse in 2021. Back then, the woman, who was identified as Jane Doe, also claimed that Soulja held her hostage, subjected her to a hostile work environment and failed to pay her the salary she was supposed to get. While speaking with Rolling Stone four months back, Soulja said, 'The district attorney never filed charges. I was never charged or convicted of this, criminally. So, to be accused of this civilly is beyond me. I've never done any of the things they're accusing me of. I just feel like this is very unfair." Moreover, his attorney had mentioned back then that the evidence for this case does not support the verdict. 'It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial. Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case," his attorney shared through an official statement. Meanwhile, the woman's legal team mentioned back then that they were 'looking forward to moving on to the punitive damages phase of the case." The case will now move to its second phase, where it will be determined if the rapper has to pay more to the woman in punitive damages. Soulja Boy arrested on suspicion of firearm possession: Reports

Soulja Boy has been arrested following a traffic stop in Los Angeles, according to reports, just four months after the rapper was found liable for sexually assaulting and kidnapping his former assistant. The Grammy-nominated rapper, born DeAndre Cortez Way, was apprehended by LA authorities during an early-morning traffic stop on Sunday, Aug. 3, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Variety and NBC4 Los Angeles. Soulja, 35, was reportedly the passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over at the intersection of Melrose and Genesee avenues. Police told Variety and NBC News that a firearm was spotted inside the vehicle, which led to the rapper's arrest on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm. USA TODAY has reached out to the LAPD and representatives for Soulja Boy for comment. Soulja Boy legal trouble: Rapper found liable of sexual assault, kidnapping of former assistant The "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" emcee's arrest comes after he was found liable for assault and kidnapping allegations brought by a woman who claimed she was his former assistant. In the civil trial, the anonymous assistant was awarded more than $4 million in compensatory damages, according to a release from her attorney. Diddy's latest legal move: Rap mogul requests overturn of conviction or new trial after 'discriminatory' use of law In a statement to USA TODAY in April, Soulja's attorney, Rickey Ivie, said the evidence presented in the case "does not support the verdict." "It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial," Ivie said. "Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case." Contributing: Anna Kaufman, USA TODAY
