Spartanburgers hit four homers in win at Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Hub City flipped the script Thursday against the team with the most home runs in the South Atlantic League, taking down Greensboro 7-4. Four separate Spartanburgers home runs powered the offense, while Josh Trentadue and Kolton Curtis (W, 2-1) combined for all nine innings on the mound with 10 strikeouts. Both starters allowed a runner into scoring position in the first but eventually put zeroes on the scoreboard. Facing Greensboro right-hander Khristian Curtis (L, 1-4), Yeison Morrobel mashed the first pitch of the top of the second inning off the right-field scoreboard. Trentadue protected the lead, working around a walk and an error in the bottom half. After a calmer third frame, Khristian Curtis lost his command in the fourth. The Spartanburgers led the inning off with a walk and a single. A Greensboro fielding error contributed to the Spartanburgers scoring a run. After a couple more walks and a pitching change, new reliever Jack Carey stranded three on the bags. Hub City got to Carey in the fifth. With one out, Keith Jones tagged a line-drive home run to right. Anthony Gutierrez followed Jones up with his first homer of the season, sending one well over the left-center field wall. Kolton Curtis took over for Trentadue in the bottom of the fifth. Duce Gourson responded with two outs for a two-run home run to cut the Hub City lead in half. In the top of the sixth, Arturo Disla traded another blow. Disla scorched a two-run blast of his own to dead-center. The 'Burgers tacked on one more run in the seventh. Gutierrez was hit by the first pitch of the inning. He stole second, and Morrobel doubled home the seventh run of the game for Hub City. It was the last of three hits on the evening for Morrobel, collecting a second RBI. The Grasshoppers fought back in the eighth against Kolton Curtis. Keiner Delgado started the inning with a leadoff homer. The next two batters reached on a single and a walk. Kolton Curtis promptly rolled a double play. A two-out single from Omar Alfonzo scored a second run in the inning. The Spartanburgers went into the ninth with a three-run lead. Morrobel popped out to finish a clean top of the inning and end any chance of a cycle. After a leadoff single in the bottom half, Kolton Curtis turned his own double play on a comebacker. One pitch later, the Spartanburgers turned a ground ball into the final out of the contest. With a 7-4 win, the Spartanburgers take a 2-1 series lead into Friday. RHP David Davalillo (4-0, 1.02 ERA) toes the rubber for Hub City trying to follow up his SAL May Pitcher of the Month selection. Spartanburgers fall in Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Yeison Morrobel gave the Spartanburgers a one-run lead in the sixth inning of Tuesday's series opener between Hub City (27-25) and the Greensboro Grasshoppers (35-16). After five strong innings from Spartanburgers starter Leandro Lopez (L, 2-4), Greensboro responded with a home run as part of a four-run sixth of their own. That was all the scoring in the contest; the Grasshoppers claimed game one by three. The Spartanburgers threatened starter Carlos Jimenez in the first. A walk followed by a Keith Jones II double had two runners in scoring position, but Hub City failed to capitalize. Jimenez struck out the side in order in the second to finish his day. Lopez got off to a great start on the mound for the 'Burgers. After a four-pitch walk to begin the first, Lopez retired the next eight batters he faced, including a double play to face the minimum through three innings. Lopez ran into some trouble after the first two reached in the fourth on a walk and a single. Another double play helped Lopez keep the contest scoreless. The Spartanburgers stranded five runners in scoring position through the first five innings. Against Hunter Furtado (W, 4-0) in the sixth, Hub City changed its fortunes. After a one-out walk to Jones, he stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. With two outs, Morrobel yanked an RBI single through the right side to give the Spartanburgers their first win. Lopez allowed the first two batters for Greensboro to reach again in the bottom of the sixth. A walk and double had two runners in scoring position. The Spartanburgers got the first out on a fielder's choice at the plate that erased Justin Miknis, the lead runner. Duce Gourson followed up with an opposite-field home run that ended the day for Lopez. Anthony Susac entered and gave up one more run on a Javier Rivas double and Omar Alfonzo single. Susac and Victor Simeon tossed scoreless frames respectively in the seventh and eighth. The 'Burgers bats could not heat up in the final three frames. Despite three walks in that span, Hub City could not manage a hit. Former MLB reliever Beau Burrows (S, 1) tallied the final three outs with a pair of strikeouts. Greensboro and Hub City return early to the ballpark tomorrow. The Spartanburgers send RHP Aidan Curry (1-1, 6.31 ERA) to face off against RHP Antwone Kelly (1-0, 3.66 ERA) for the Grasshoppers. Spartanburgers roll over Winston-Salem
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Spartanburgers (26-23) dominated game four against the Winston-Salem Dash (17-32) on Friday night with a 12-2 win. Hub City's offense grooved in full force; five Spartanburgers notched multi-hit games, led by Yeison Morrobel, who bashed his first home run of the season. As a team, the 'Burgers collected 13 hits, which tied a season high. With ample offense and errorless defense behind him, David Davalillo (W, 4-0) glided to his fourth win of the season. The righty struck out six through five frames. Davalillo entered the night with a 0.92 ERA, but Winston-Salem jumped on the Spartanburgers right-hander in the top of the first. Leadoff man Cole McConnell worked a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on an Alec Macarewicz single. The Winston-Salem lead wouldn't last long. Casey Cook singled to start the bottom half of the first against Jake Bockenstedt (L, 1-4). A batter later, Gleider Figuereo blooped a double to left to score Cook and tie the game. Anthony Gutierrez then singled home Figuereo to take the lead. After a couple of scoreless innings, the Spartanburgers piled on in the fourth. Morrobel led off the inning with a solo blast to right, which just snuck over the right field fence into the Spartanburgers' bullpen. After a single from Julian Brock and a walk to Quincy Scott, Hub City added more with a single from Danyer Cueva. Cook and Figuereo picked up RBIs to finish up a four-run inning. After Davalillo polished off his evening with five strong frames, Hub City brought one more across in the bottom of the fifth. Gutierrez doubled to lead off the inning, and two batters later, Brock brought him home with a bouncer up the middle. The Spartanburgers led, 7-1, after the fifth. Winston-Salem pushed a run across in the top of the seventh. Then, the Spartanburgers scored five runs on two hits, six walks and a hit batter against three pitchers, including a listed catcher, in the bottom of the eighth. Hub City tries to take the series lead on Saturday afternoon at 4:35 p.m. ET. The Spartanburgers send RHP D.J. Spartanburgers hold off Winston-Salem
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Hub City struck early and often Wednesday, and after blowing a late lead the day prior, survived a nervy ending. The Spartanburgers (25-22) snatched a 7-6 win away from the Winston Salem Dash (16-31) at Fifth Third Park. The Dash had the tying and go-ahead runs on board in the top of the ninth, but Adonis Villavicencio closed the door for his first High-A save. Gleider Figuereo blasted his team-leading eighth long ball of the season to put the Spartanburgers in the lead; although that lead was challenged, it wouldn't be overtaken. Figuereo, Dylan Dreiling and Julian Brock all put together multi-hit games. Theo Hardy reached base all four times he came to the plate. Hub City starter Aidan Curry, who struck out six in four innings of work, only allowed one run on three hits and two walks. Joey Danielson (W, 2-1) pitched a scoreless fifth inning. Winston-Salem's offense whittled down the Spartanburgers' lead, but Villavicencio (S, 1) closed the game out. Hub City struck early against Winston Salem's southpaw starter Christian Oppor (L, 0-2). Casey Cook and Dreiling started the 'Burger at-bats with back-to-back singles, then executed a double steal. Figuereo was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Anthony Gutierrez hit a line drive to short. Dash shortstop Jeral Perez made the snag, but threw the ball away attempting to double up Dreiling at second base. Cook sped home on the throwing error to guide the Spartanburgers to an early 1-0 lead. The Dash responded in the top of the second, as Alec Makarewicz singled Matt Hogan home to tie the contest at one run apiece. But the Spartanburgers answered and retook the lead with a solo shot from Figuereo which scraped the Spartanburg sky and cleared the right field fence. Oppor's outing ended in the bottom of the fourth. After allowing a walk and a hit, the left-hander gave way to Winston-Salem bullpen arm Connery Peters, who promptly ceded an RBI single to Hardy, and two batters later, a two-RBI triple to Dreiling. Peters gave up another run in the fifth on two walks and a fielders' choice. Hub City led, 6-1, after five frames. Against lefty Dylan MacLean, Winston-Salem got a run back in the sixth after Hogan led the inning off with a triple. The Dash tacked on two more runs in the seventh, capitalizing on a dropped popup. With two outs, Jeral Perez mashed his 11th home run of the season to put Winston-Salem back within two runs. The two teams traded runs in the eighth. Jordan Sprinkle knocked a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one. Josh Mollerus then stranded the tying run in scoring position. Hub City rebuilt their lead in the bottom half when Cook walked with the bases loaded. Mollerus returned to the mound in the ninth, but Cole McConnell led the inning off with a solo home run. Villavicencio took the spot of Mollerus in trying to record the final three outs. After a pair of groundouts, a hit batter and single put the tying run at third base for the Dash. Villavicencio struk out Wes Kath to seal the victory. Hub City and Winston-Salem split the first two games of the series. Game three is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET on Thursday. Spartanburgers again lose late lead in loss
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — After taking four games over Rome in a battle for the top of the South Atlantic League South division, Hub City welcomed the Winston-Salem Dash, High-A affiliate for the White Sox, Tuesday night. The Dash, buried at the bottom of the South division, climbed out of a two-run hole in the ninth to beat the 'Burgers 4-2 at Fifth Third Park. Winston-Salem scored four runs on three hits and three walks in the ninth, all against Wilian Bormie. The Dash were hapless against Spartanburgers' starter Leandro Lopez, who dazzled for 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Six of Lopez's eight strikeouts came on swings and misses. The right-hander held Winston-Salem scoreless; despite allowing two hits, he faced the minimum. Julian Brock helped out his battery mate, throwing out two runners attempting to steal. Theo Hardy also turned a double play to end the first. Lopez surrendered a base hit to begin the ball game to Cole McConnell. Lopez immediately rolled a double play and worked a quick first frame. An Arturo Disla double was all the Spartanburgers could muster in the bottom half. Lopez used a pair of caught stealings to work around baserunners in the second and fourth innings. The righty starter struck out a pair of runners in both the third and fifth for one-two-three innings. After his seventh and eight strikeouts to begin the sixth, Lopez exited and Victor Simeon got the final out of the sixth. Hub City's offense left a runner in scoring position in the third before cashing in off Winston-Salem starter Lucas Gordon in the fourth. Casey Cook stole second base with two outs and Yeison Morrobel drove him in with a bloop single to right. Phil Fox entered from the bullpen and quieted the Spartanburgers down for the next two innings. Prior to the seventh inning, the game entered a weather delay. After over an hour and 15 minutes, Seth Clark resumed play on the mound for the Spartanburgers. Clark tossed scoreless frames in both the seventh and eighth innings with a new season high of four strikeouts. The Spartanburgers doubled their lead in the bottom of the seventh against Clete Hertzog. Brock singled and stole second, advancing to third on a Hertzog error. Keith Jones bounced in the insurance run with an RBI single. Carson Jacobs (W, 2-2) replaced Hertzog and limited the damage. In the top of the ninth, Bormie (L, 1-3) struggled to find command. On three walks and three singles, Winston-Salem plated four. Jackson Appel slapped the two-run single to take the lead. The Spartanburgers went down in order in the ninth against Mark McLaughlin (S, 3). Hub City sends RHP Aidan Curry (1-1, 7.06 ERA) to the mound searching for a series-evening win.
