Spartanburgers again lose late lead in loss
Winston-Salem scored four runs on three hits and three walks in the ninth, all against Wilian Bormie.
The Dash were hapless against Spartanburgers' starter Leandro Lopez, who dazzled for 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Six of Lopez's eight strikeouts came on swings and misses. The right-hander held Winston-Salem scoreless; despite allowing two hits, he faced the minimum. Julian Brock helped out his battery mate, throwing out two runners attempting to steal. Theo Hardy also turned a double play to end the first.
Lopez surrendered a base hit to begin the ball game to Cole McConnell. Lopez immediately rolled a double play and worked a quick first frame. An Arturo Disla double was all the Spartanburgers could muster in the bottom half.
Lopez used a pair of caught stealings to work around baserunners in the second and fourth innings. The righty starter struck out a pair of runners in both the third and fifth for one-two-three innings. After his seventh and eight strikeouts to begin the sixth, Lopez exited and Victor Simeon got the final out of the sixth.
Hub City's offense left a runner in scoring position in the third before cashing in off Winston-Salem starter Lucas Gordon in the fourth. Casey Cook stole second base with two outs and Yeison Morrobel drove him in with a bloop single to right. Phil Fox entered from the bullpen and quieted the Spartanburgers down for the next two innings. Prior to the seventh inning, the game entered a weather delay.
After over an hour and 15 minutes, Seth Clark resumed play on the mound for the Spartanburgers. Clark tossed scoreless frames in both the seventh and eighth innings with a new season high of four strikeouts.
The Spartanburgers doubled their lead in the bottom of the seventh against Clete Hertzog. Brock singled and stole second, advancing to third on a Hertzog error. Keith Jones bounced in the insurance run with an RBI single. Carson Jacobs (W, 2-2) replaced Hertzog and limited the damage.
In the top of the ninth, Bormie (L, 1-3) struggled to find command. On three walks and three singles, Winston-Salem plated four. Jackson Appel slapped the two-run single to take the lead. The Spartanburgers went down in order in the ninth against Mark McLaughlin (S, 3).
Hub City sends RHP Aidan Curry (1-1, 7.06 ERA) to the mound searching for a series-evening win. The Dash will counter with LHP Christian Oppor (0-1, 9.82 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET.

Winston's much larger and chunkier head was impossible to miss, earning himself the nickname of "Chooch." Thankfully, Winston didn't seem to mind his bigger size. He threw himself right into the mix. He loved being surrounded by all the other puppies. Francis said Winston joined the other litter when they were about 4 weeks old, right around the time they started eating mush and began weaning off their mother. "We never leave the pups alone so whenever we took mama out, we would put him in with them," she said. She added that it is easy to introduce a singleton pup to another litter. Because of their young age, they adapt quickly. They all play, eat and nap together. Winston wasted no time in getting to know his step-siblings, joining the "puppy puddle" snuggle session. As of Friday, the Instagram video reached over 1.5 million views, as people obsessed over Winston. "Ohhh I am dyyying !! He's the most adorable fluffy potato chonk," commented one viewer. Another added: "They're so darn cute!" But despite the size difference now, Francis shared in the caption that all these golden retrievers will be about the same size as adults: Males reach about 65 to 75 pounds, while females are a bit smaller at 55 to 65 pounds. HBCU football 2025: WSSU looking to take next step in CIAA
At Winston-Salem State, the expectations are clear: win games, compete for titles, and carry on the legacy of one of the most respected names in HBCU football. Starting quarterback Daylin Lee is ready for it all. "If it's a target on our back, I invite it. We're just going to do what we do every Saturday," Lee said during CIAA Media Day. After going 7–3 last season, the Rams know what it feels like to be counted out-and what it takes to bounce back. Now, they're embracing the role of frontrunner with confidence, maturity, and hunger. Lee isn't just under center-he's at the center of Winston-Salem State's climb back to the top. Head coach Robert Massey didn't hold back his praise."I think he's probably the best quarterback in all of Black college football," Massey said. He added, "You're not the face of the program-you're the face of the university." That statement speaks volumes. Lee has grown into a leader on and off the field. From a lanky freshman to a strong, 6'4″, 220-pound field general, his evolution has mirrored the Rams' own growth as a contender in CIAA and HBCU football. Winston-Salem State University has always had a defensive edge, and that won't change in 2025. Defensive lineman Kairon Martin says the returning unit is deeper, stronger, and more connected. "Our motto is: Stop the run, force the pass, break on the short, or break on the deep," Martin said. WSSU also stands out in a different way: almost none of their top players entered the transfer portal."We have a great coaching staff who really cares about us, a great environment on campus. Guys bought in," Martin added. In an era of constant roster turnover, Winston-Salem State is staying home-and staying focused. Massey knows what's on the line. With the CIAA now operating as one full league without divisions-and with an automatic NCAA playoff bid up for grabs-the Rams are treating every Saturday like it's championship week. "This format makes us a better conference," Massey said. "Now we're playing everybody, and when we get to the playoffs, we're battle-tested." That battle starts early. WSSU opens the season in Alabama for a Week Zero showdown against Tuskegee. Lee says the Rams are already grinding."We're working out in the heat now. By the time August 31st comes, we'll be ready to go." Last season's two losses to Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union still sting. Lee remembers them clearly-not as losses, but as missed opportunities."They didn't beat us. We beat ourselves," he said. "It was our missed assignments."With a full offseason to regroup and return, the Rams know they have the pieces to finish the job."We left a lot of points on the board," Lee said. "We just have to finish." Massey put it best:"We're going to protect the legacy-of being a winner on and off the field." At Winston-Salem State, it's never just about the scoreboard.
