Spartanburgers again lose late lead in loss
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — After taking four games over Rome in a battle for the top of the South Atlantic League South division, Hub City welcomed the Winston-Salem Dash, High-A affiliate for the White Sox, Tuesday night. The Dash, buried at the bottom of the South division, climbed out of a two-run hole in the ninth to beat the 'Burgers 4-2 at Fifth Third Park. Winston-Salem scored four runs on three hits and three walks in the ninth, all against Wilian Bormie. The Dash were hapless against Spartanburgers' starter Leandro Lopez, who dazzled for 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Six of Lopez's eight strikeouts came on swings and misses. The right-hander held Winston-Salem scoreless; despite allowing two hits, he faced the minimum. Julian Brock helped out his battery mate, throwing out two runners attempting to steal. Theo Hardy also turned a double play to end the first. Lopez surrendered a base hit to begin the ball game to Cole McConnell. Lopez immediately rolled a double play and worked a quick first frame. An Arturo Disla double was all the Spartanburgers could muster in the bottom half. Lopez used a pair of caught stealings to work around baserunners in the second and fourth innings. The righty starter struck out a pair of runners in both the third and fifth for one-two-three innings. After his seventh and eight strikeouts to begin the sixth, Lopez exited and Victor Simeon got the final out of the sixth. Hub City's offense left a runner in scoring position in the third before cashing in off Winston-Salem starter Lucas Gordon in the fourth. Casey Cook stole second base with two outs and Yeison Morrobel drove him in with a bloop single to right. Phil Fox entered from the bullpen and quieted the Spartanburgers down for the next two innings. Prior to the seventh inning, the game entered a weather delay. After over an hour and 15 minutes, Seth Clark resumed play on the mound for the Spartanburgers. Clark tossed scoreless frames in both the seventh and eighth innings with a new season high of four strikeouts. The Spartanburgers doubled their lead in the bottom of the seventh against Clete Hertzog. Brock singled and stole second, advancing to third on a Hertzog error. Keith Jones bounced in the insurance run with an RBI single. Carson Jacobs (W, 2-2) replaced Hertzog and limited the damage. In the top of the ninth, Bormie (L, 1-3) struggled to find command. On three walks and three singles, Winston-Salem plated four. Jackson Appel slapped the two-run single to take the lead. The Spartanburgers went down in order in the ninth against Mark McLaughlin (S, 3). Hub City sends RHP Aidan Curry (1-1, 7.06 ERA) to the mound searching for a series-evening win. The Dash will counter with LHP Christian Oppor (0-1, 9.82 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Galanie helps Winston-Salem get past Drive
GREENVILLE, SC – The Greenville Drive couldn't climb out of an early hole on Tuesday night at Fluor Field, falling 5–2 to the Winston-Salem Dash despite a pair of multi-hit efforts and a solid showing from the bullpen. Winston-Salem scored in four of the first five innings and never trailed, capitalizing on early miscues and timely hits. Caden Connor reached base three times and scored twice for the Dash, while Jackson Appel drove in the game's opening run with an RBI triple in the first inning. Jeral Perez added a solo home run in the second. Drive starter Danny Kirwin (0–1) was tagged for three runs in three innings of work. The Dash showed an aggressive approach on the basepaths early, stealing five bases on the night and forcing pressure with sharp contact and smart situational hitting. Greenville responded in the second inning, manufacturing a run despite not recording a hit. Miguel Bleis reached on a walk, advanced to third on a pair of fielder's choices, and scored on Andy Lugo's groundout. Down 4–1 in the seventh, the Drive trimmed the lead to two when Marvin Alcantara singled and came home on a two-out triple to right-center field from Yophery Rodriguez. Rodriguez and Nelly Taylor each collected extra-base hits, while Alcantara went 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Drive bullpen trio of Eduardo Rivera, Darvin Garcia, and Cooper Adams combined for six innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out five. Adams retired the side in order in the eighth but allowed a key insurance run in the ninth after Cole McConnell walked, stole two bases, and scored on Ryan Galanie's RBI single. Greenville had a final chance in the bottom of the ninth, starting with a leadoff line drive off the Green Monster by Brooks Brannon, but he was cut down trying to stretch it to a double. After the Drive catcher was cut down at second, the Drive couldn't sustain the rally. Carson Jacobs closed out the win for Winston-Salem with two strikeouts in the final frame. With the loss, Greenville drops to 4–6 on the season. The series continues Wednesday night at Fluor Field, with first pitch set for 6:45 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school board votes down proposed change to drug-free workplace policy
FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education discussed making changes to a policy that would allow them to hire people even if they fail a pre-employment drug test. The current drug-free workplace policy turns away people who test positive for THC, a compound found in marijuana. During Tuesday's Board of Education meeting, community members called to end or keep a more-than-10-year-old policy held by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. 'I do not think lowering the standards for people who are responsible for children is the way to go. I think the better option is to treat teachers better and offer better incentives,' said one parent. These speakers shared their thoughts on the removal of a policy that would prevent candidates from being rejected for testing positive for THC. If a candidate fails the initial drug test they can still be hired but have to take 4 random drug test throughout their first year of employment. 'Quality teachers don't smoke ingest or inject drugs that could impact their ability to teach students. I can not believe we're having this conversation,' said a community member. Prior to Tuesday night's discussion if a candidate tested positive for THC they would be disqualified for half a year. Some folks hope to get rid of that policy in order to fill open positions. 'This change would allow to expand our hiring pool and stay competitive with neighboring counties,' one community advocate said. Ultimately, school leaders had the final say. The Board of Education voted 8-1 to keep the policy. Neighboring school districts like Guilford County do not drug test teachers but they do test bus drivers as a condition of their employment.
