Spartanburgers hit four homers in win at Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Hub City flipped the script Thursday against the team with the most home runs in the South Atlantic League, taking down Greensboro 7-4. Four separate Spartanburgers home runs powered the offense, while Josh Trentadue and Kolton Curtis (W, 2-1) combined for all nine innings on the mound with 10 strikeouts.
Both starters allowed a runner into scoring position in the first but eventually put zeroes on the scoreboard. Facing Greensboro right-hander Khristian Curtis (L, 1-4), Yeison Morrobel mashed the first pitch of the top of the second inning off the right-field scoreboard. Trentadue protected the lead, working around a walk and an error in the bottom half.
After a calmer third frame, Khristian Curtis lost his command in the fourth. The Spartanburgers led the inning off with a walk and a single. A Greensboro fielding error contributed to the Spartanburgers scoring a run. After a couple more walks and a pitching change, new reliever Jack Carey stranded three on the bags. Hub City got to Carey in the fifth. With one out, Keith Jones tagged a line-drive home run to right. Anthony Gutierrez followed Jones up with his first homer of the season, sending one well over the left-center field wall.
Kolton Curtis took over for Trentadue in the bottom of the fifth. Duce Gourson responded with two outs for a two-run home run to cut the Hub City lead in half. In the top of the sixth, Arturo Disla traded another blow. Disla scorched a two-run blast of his own to dead-center.
The 'Burgers tacked on one more run in the seventh. Gutierrez was hit by the first pitch of the inning. He stole second, and Morrobel doubled home the seventh run of the game for Hub City. It was the last of three hits on the evening for Morrobel, collecting a second RBI.
The Grasshoppers fought back in the eighth against Kolton Curtis. Keiner Delgado started the inning with a leadoff homer. The next two batters reached on a single and a walk. Kolton Curtis promptly rolled a double play. A two-out single from Omar Alfonzo scored a second run in the inning.
The Spartanburgers went into the ninth with a three-run lead. Morrobel popped out to finish a clean top of the inning and end any chance of a cycle. After a leadoff single in the bottom half, Kolton Curtis turned his own double play on a comebacker. One pitch later, the Spartanburgers turned a ground ball into the final out of the contest.
With a 7-4 win, the Spartanburgers take a 2-1 series lead into Friday. RHP David Davalillo (4-0, 1.02 ERA) toes the rubber for Hub City trying to follow up his SAL May Pitcher of the Month selection. Greensboro sends LHP Connor Wietgrefe (0-2, 6.75 ERA) out there to challenge. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. ET.

Spartanburgers fall in Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Yeison Morrobel gave the Spartanburgers a one-run lead in the sixth inning of Tuesday's series opener between Hub City (27-25) and the Greensboro Grasshoppers (35-16). After five strong innings from Spartanburgers starter Leandro Lopez (L, 2-4), Greensboro responded with a home run as part of a four-run sixth of their own. That was all the scoring in the contest; the Grasshoppers claimed game one by three. The Spartanburgers threatened starter Carlos Jimenez in the first. A walk followed by a Keith Jones II double had two runners in scoring position, but Hub City failed to capitalize. Jimenez struck out the side in order in the second to finish his day. Lopez got off to a great start on the mound for the 'Burgers. After a four-pitch walk to begin the first, Lopez retired the next eight batters he faced, including a double play to face the minimum through three innings. Lopez ran into some trouble after the first two reached in the fourth on a walk and a single. Another double play helped Lopez keep the contest scoreless. The Spartanburgers stranded five runners in scoring position through the first five innings. Against Hunter Furtado (W, 4-0) in the sixth, Hub City changed its fortunes. After a one-out walk to Jones, he stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. With two outs, Morrobel yanked an RBI single through the right side to give the Spartanburgers their first win. Lopez allowed the first two batters for Greensboro to reach again in the bottom of the sixth. A walk and double had two runners in scoring position. The Spartanburgers got the first out on a fielder's choice at the plate that erased Justin Miknis, the lead runner. Duce Gourson followed up with an opposite-field home run that ended the day for Lopez. Anthony Susac entered and gave up one more run on a Javier Rivas double and Omar Alfonzo single. Susac and Victor Simeon tossed scoreless frames respectively in the seventh and eighth. The 'Burgers bats could not heat up in the final three frames. Despite three walks in that span, Hub City could not manage a hit. Former MLB reliever Beau Burrows (S, 1) tallied the final three outs with a pair of strikeouts. Greensboro and Hub City return early to the ballpark tomorrow. The Spartanburgers send RHP Aidan Curry (1-1, 6.31 ERA) to face off against RHP Antwone Kelly (1-0, 3.66 ERA) for the Grasshoppers. Spartanburgers roll over Winston-Salem
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Spartanburgers (26-23) dominated game four against the Winston-Salem Dash (17-32) on Friday night with a 12-2 win. Hub City's offense grooved in full force; five Spartanburgers notched multi-hit games, led by Yeison Morrobel, who bashed his first home run of the season. As a team, the 'Burgers collected 13 hits, which tied a season high. With ample offense and errorless defense behind him, David Davalillo (W, 4-0) glided to his fourth win of the season. The righty struck out six through five frames. Davalillo entered the night with a 0.92 ERA, but Winston-Salem jumped on the Spartanburgers right-hander in the top of the first. Leadoff man Cole McConnell worked a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on an Alec Macarewicz single. The Winston-Salem lead wouldn't last long. Casey Cook singled to start the bottom half of the first against Jake Bockenstedt (L, 1-4). A batter later, Gleider Figuereo blooped a double to left to score Cook and tie the game. Anthony Gutierrez then singled home Figuereo to take the lead. After a couple of scoreless innings, the Spartanburgers piled on in the fourth. Morrobel led off the inning with a solo blast to right, which just snuck over the right field fence into the Spartanburgers' bullpen. After a single from Julian Brock and a walk to Quincy Scott, Hub City added more with a single from Danyer Cueva. Cook and Figuereo picked up RBIs to finish up a four-run inning. After Davalillo polished off his evening with five strong frames, Hub City brought one more across in the bottom of the fifth. Gutierrez doubled to lead off the inning, and two batters later, Brock brought him home with a bouncer up the middle. The Spartanburgers led, 7-1, after the fifth. Winston-Salem pushed a run across in the top of the seventh. Then, the Spartanburgers scored five runs on two hits, six walks and a hit batter against three pitchers, including a listed catcher, in the bottom of the eighth. Hub City tries to take the series lead on Saturday afternoon at 4:35 p.m. ET. The Spartanburgers send RHP D.J.
