Free support from leisure centres up for grabs for Somerset community heroes
A new scheme offering free support from leisure centres has been launched for community heroes in Taunton and Wellington. Everyone Active, in partnership with Somerset Council, has started the Community Champions scheme to aid projects addressing local issues. The initiative, which was launched on Thursday, May 1, aims to recognise the dedication of those who go above and beyond in their communities. People involved in mentoring, promoting health and wellbeing, supporting inclusivity, or leading environmental or cultural projects are being encouraged to apply. It can be a charitable initiative or a small, targeted project. Successful applicants will secure valuable use of facilities within their local leisure centres to help them carry out these projects. Everyone Active will raise awareness of this work to strengthen connections, encourage civic engagement and foster a culture of giving back. Those selected for the Community Champions scheme are also in with a chance of being shortlisted for the Champions Awards in autumn of this year. Mark Washington, Everyone Active's contract manager, said: "We are hugely excited to launch the Community Champions scheme, which we hope will make a real difference in Taunton and Wellington. "We want to highlight the work of everyday heroes who are changing people's lives and inspiring others to make a positive impact in their communities. "We encourage local people, community projects and charitable initiatives to get their applications in so we can support the fantastic work that you do." People interested in applying have until Thursday, June 12 to submit their applications via the Champions website. For more information or to submit an application, visit the Champions website at Everyone Active, which operates Blackbrook Leisure Centre & Spa, Wellsprings Leisure Centre, Taunton Swimming Pool, Wellington Sports Centre and Vivary Golf & Adventure Centre, is also set to launch a new Colleague Champions scheme. This will recognise and reward Everyone Active employees who consistently go above and beyond in their roles. The company also runs the Sporting Champions scheme, which has helped more than 6,000 athletes by giving them free access to Everyone Active's leisure centres nationwide. Since 2016, the scheme has provided aspiring athletes with access to top training facilities and mentoring support from Olympians and Paralympians.
