IndieWire Announces Inaugural Future of Filmmaking Summit at the American Pavilion at Cannes

IndieWire is proud to announce its inaugural Future of Filmmaking summit at the American Pavilion at Cannes, May 15-18. With four panels across four days, these lively conversations will speak to where the industry is going and the opportunities for emerging creatives at a time of unprecedented change. The summit is presented by United for Business. Richard Linklater will be our keynote chat in conversation with Eric Kohn, artistic director of Southampton Playhouse. The ultimate outsider-insider, Linklater has been a celebrated filmmaker for over 30 years. Before he became a Cannes regular, he was a cinephile who worked tirelessly to build a film culture in Austin, Texas. More from IndieWire 'Spring Breakers' Sequel Announced Sans Harmony Korine AMC Will Soon Offer Half-Off Pricing on Wednesdays, but Other Theaters Won't Follow Suit Just Yet The 'many hats' ethos he brought to the early days of the Austin Film Society — funding it with money earned on an offshore oil rig, and later as a bellhop — still reflects the kind of 'get 'er done' scrappiness that filmmaking demands today. With Linklater's new film debuting at Cannes, 'Nouvelle Vague,' he looks back to the start of the French New Wave, the legendary movement that reenergized cinema at another inflection point in the medium's history. He'll speak to why he's more excited about the future of film than he's been in years and why he believes that the Austin Film Society model can be exported to other cities to expand the film-culture footprint. Our panel on the future of international production will be a hot-button topic at a moment when Trump is tacking tariffs on 'foreign movies.' Harris-Bridson will lead a conversation with Watch This Ready executive vice president Emily Korteweg; Fabula North America head of film and TV, Andrew Hevia; Mandalay Pictures president Jason Michael Berman; and Oxbelly executive director Caroline von Kuhn. IndieWire editor at large Anne Thompson will also lead a one-on-one conversation with Mubi head of global distribution Arianna Bocco. She's one of the indie film world's most respected tastemakers and served as president of IFC Films, where she steered the release of major festival titles such as Venice Golden Lion winner 'Happening' as well as bold new visions from filmmakers making their feature debuts. Mubi broke through with last year's Cannes standout, 'The Substance'; with Bocco now at the helm and Mubi currently raising $100 million, the specialty streamer is poised for major expansion. We'll also host 'How to Survive and Thrive in the Age of AI,' moderated by former IndieWire editor Eric Kohn. It features Fable Studios CEO Edward Saatchi, Prezense/NVIDIA's Seth Piezas, DoubleEye Studios founder Kiira Benzing, Asteria Film Co. partner Paul Trillo, and Venice Immersive programmer Liz Rosenthal. The impact of this emerging technology on the future of filmmaking is the industry's favorite existential question and these are the people who can provide a sense of where it's going. Attendance for all panels requires a festival badge and American Pavilion membership, which can be purchased here. If you can't join us, we got you: Videos from the Future of Filmmaking summit will be published on IndieWire. Join us on the American Pavilion May 15-18. Dates and times follow. ‘Spring Breakers 2' Set With New Cast: Bella Thorne, ‘Stranger Things' Star Grace Van Dien and More (EXCLUSIVE)

A sequel to Harmony Korine's cult classic 'Spring Breakers' that starred James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens is officially a go. 'Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain' comes from the producers of the 2012 original but with an all new cast — including Bella Thorne. Replacing Korine in the director's chair will be Matthew Bright ('Freeway'). Alongside Thorne, 'Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain' will star Ariel Martin ('Zombies 2'), Grace Van Dien ('Stranger Things') and True Whitaker ('Godfather of Harlem'). The four are set to play a group rebellious girls who hit the road for spring break in a crime thriller described as 'a bold new ride for Gen Z.' But, as per the synopsis, 'When their trip explodes out of control, they're forced to outrun the chaos they've created.' Producers of the original feature Muse Production's Chris Hanley ('American Psycho,' 'The Virgin Suicides') and Jordan Gertner ('Bully') have reteamed for the sequel. Capstone Studios serves as financiers, with global sales being handled by Capture's Ella Field, Asia Muci, Emilie Barra and Nathan Wang. 'We're thrilled to be working with Christian and Capture on Spring Breakers – Salvation Mountain and excited to keep exploring bold, new, disruptive stories around that wild, fever-dream of youth,' said Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner. 'The desire for Spring Break to go on forever is something we've never let go of.' Korine's 'Spring Breakers' went on to gross over $30 million at the global box office from a $5 million budget and solidified itself as a cult hit. A sequel involving Christian extremists — 'Spring Breakers: The Second Coming' — was first announced in 2014 with Jonas Åkerlund attached and Irvine Welsh writing. By 2017, the project had been shelved in favor of digital series which never materialized. Selena Gomez Says ‘Women Have it Much Worse' Dealing With Social Media Hate: ‘It's The Character That Gets Judged'

Selena Gomez says that when it comes to dealing with negative social media comments, women have it worse. During a recent appearance on the 'On Purpose with Jay Shetty Podcast,' Gomez and her fiancé, Benny Blanco, discussed social media hate. While Blanco said he doesn't read into what people think about him, Gomez shared a different view on the topic. 'From my perspective, it's pretty wild, and I think this isn't news to anybody, that obviously women have a lot more intense feelings from their appearance to what they're wearing to everything.' Gomez explained that her online perception affects how she prepares for red carpets. 'When I get prepared for an event, 90 percent of the time I'm just like, 'I just hope I can take the picture and sit down.'' Gomez said, 'It's the character that gets judged, it's the way I'm not white enough, I'm not Mexican enough.' She continued, 'There's just so many different things that come up in my face that I can't help but see, but I fall victim to looking at things, and it really doesn't add to your life, but it's just so difficult. From the choices of people you date…it's like nobody cares about those kind of things with men.' Gomez said that recently, 'everyone' online 'had something to say' about her weight. 'Oh yeah, my weight's a big one too,' she said. 'It's really making me sad and — not even sad cause, I'm not a victim…I just think it's made me a tad bitter, and I feel really guilty for saying that, but it's true.' Taylor Swift Breaks 100-Day Instagram Hiatus to Praise Selena Gomez's ‘I Said I Love You First': ‘I Love This Album So Much'

Taylor Swift returned to Instagram Saturday after not posting on the app for 100 days to praise Selena Gomez's 'I Said I Love You First,' the 'Only Murders in the Building' star's new musical collaboration with her fiancé Benny Blanco. '[Selena Gomez] & [Benny Blanco] I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDD,' Swift wrote on Instagram Stories, sharing a link to the album. While her fans are certainly pleased that the current queen of pop shared the project on social media, they're also expressing frustration with other artists who are not showing support despite the fact Gomez has supported them in the past. Prior to Swift's glowing endorsement, one popular Gomez fan account posted to X, 'No celebrity supporting Selena Gomez's new album except Becky G. Not Even Taylor Swift.' The post has since been taken down. Fans are also upset with Gomez's label Interscope Records, saying that it has not properly promoted the project since its March 21 release. '[Interscope Records] must really love losing money by not promoting one of their biggest artists,' wrote one fan on X. Ahead of the album's release, Spotify posted a teaser in the form of a one-on-one sitdown between Blanco and Gomez. The 33-minute conversation took listeners behind the writing process of 'I Said I Love You First.' 'We'd get up in the morning and have a conversation. But our conversation was never led going, 'What are we going to write in the album?'' Gomez said. 'I was constantly just writing whatever you said wherever we were,' Blanco added. 'Sometimes, you'd be saying something really important, and I didn't know if you even realized, but I would always open my phone and be like, 'Fuck, that's such a good line for a song.'' Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco Release Collaborative Album ‘I Said I Love You First'

Love is in the air following the release of Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's joint album, 'I Said I Love You First.' The couple debuted the 14-song project on Thursday night, along with a music video for 'Younger and Hotter.' The video starts with a melancholic Gomez laying in the couch of a home covered in linens. Gomez leaves the room only to reveal it's actually a set. 'I hate what I wore / But I hate myself more / For thinking you were different / Wish I never loved you,' Gomez sings in 'Younger and Hotter. 'We're not getting any younger / But your girlfriends seem to.' The 33-minute video revealed the couple's writing process — 'We'd get up in the morning and have a conversation. But our conversation was never led going, 'What are we going to write in the album?'' Selena said. Blanco also said he felt like Gomez's 'personal journal' throughout the making of the album. 'I was constantly just writing whatever you said wherever we were,' Blanco said. 'Sometimes, you'd be saying something really important, and I didn't know if you even realized, but I would always open my phone and be like, 'Fuck, that's such a good line for a song.'' In this interview, the pair also confirmed collaborations with Finneas and Charli xcx, the latter on the song 'Bluest Flame.' The album also includes a collaboration with Gracie Abrams. 'More so than anything else, this isn't an album where I had any expectation because it's something we got to do together for us,' Blanco told Spotify. 'As a byproduct of who we both are, other people get to listen to this album… All in all, the best part about it was being able to spend time and make something that I love with the person I love.'
