Cardinals Farm Report: Nathan Church Shaping Up to be Underdog Prospect
Cardinals Farm Report: Nathan Church Shaping Up to be Underdog Prospect originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Like the Independence Day celebrations that rang throughout the country last week, the St. Louis Cardinals' minor league system had its fair share of fireworks in the first sixth days of the new month. Advertisement Here are some of the week's top performers and a player to keep an eye on in the near future: Nathan Church, Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) Church has been putting on a masterful performance at the dish for the Redbirds since being called up on June 3. He continued the trend with seven hits, six RBI, three runs and four walks in 20 at bats last week. The team's No. 21 prospect has been even better with Memphis than he was with Double-A Springfield, slashing .356/.436/.574/1.010 in 101 at bats with the team. St. Louis Cardinals No. 21 prospect Nathan Church warms up during spring training on Feb. 17. Jim Rassol-Imagn Images Jimmy Crooks, Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) Fellow Redbird, and No. 6 prospect, Crooks had an excellent week at the dish, racking up seven hits - including a double and a grand slam - and a walk for six RBI and three runs scored in 22 at bats. Crooks has found his footing at Triple-A after struggling at the plate earlier in the year, currently riding a 10-game hit streak dating back to June 22. Advertisement JJ Wetherholt, Springfield Cardinals (Double-A) A name likely to be added to this list repeatedly until he's in the big leagues, Wetherholt maintained his dominance at the plate with three extra base hits last week. The No. 1 prospect's first career multi-home run game resulted in seven RBI and four runs scored in that span. Wetherholt continues to prove those around him who speak well of him right, including Cardinals' right fielder Jordan Walker, who spoke highly of the top prospect when he joined the team last week. Player to keep an eye on: Deniel Ortiz, Palm Beach Cardinals (Low-A) Ortiz, 20, has quietly been having an exceptional first full professional season. The third baseman was recently named the Florida State League Player of the Month for June after leading the league with a .556 slugging percentage and a 1.005 OPS. Advertisement Though still far from the big league level, he could be a player the Cardinals look to in the future at third base with the uncertainty still remaining around Nolan Arenado. Cardinals' No. 1 Prospect Added to NL All-Star Futures Game Roster
Cardinals' No. 1 Prospect Added to NL All-Star Futures Game Roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Rosters for the 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game were revealed by the league on Monday with the NL roster featuring St. Louis Cardinals No. 1 prospect JJ Wetherholt among 16 other Top 100 prospects. St. Louis Cardinals No. 1 prospect stands with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred after being selected 7th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft. Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images The 22-year-old shortstop will be the 27th member of the Springfield Cardinals organization to represent the team on the Futures Game roster. Advertisement Wetherholt has been putting on a masterclass on both sides of the ball at the Double-A level so far this year, racking up 62 hits and 41 walks while striking out 35 times - 7th least in the Texas League - in 57 games played. His .305 average and .430 on base percentage lead all qualified Texas League hitters by a considerable margin and his 1.171 walk to strikeout rate ranks third on the league leaderboard. With a second-best walk rate (16.3%) and third-best strikeout rate (13.9%), Wetherholt finds ways to get on base in nearly half of his at bats. On top of his stellar performance at the dish, Wetherholt has made a variety of highlight-reel plays at both shortstop and second base this season, proving that he's more than just a big bat for the Cardinals' front office to be excited for. The former seventh overall pick says that while he is focusing on polishing his hitting and defense, he is taking a focused approach to baserunning this season, which he has shown through his 13 stolen bases. Advertisement The Futures Game will be played at Truist Park in Atlanta on Saturday, July 12 at 4 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast on MLB Network with simulcast on and the MLB app. Related: Cardinals Farm Report: Luken Baker Turns Page After Rough Start at Memphis Related: Cardinals Leapfrog Yankees in Latest MLB Power Rankings This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 30, 2025, where it first appeared.

Springfield exhibit to showcase Route 66's unique attractions
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The History Museum on the Square is opening a new temporary exhibit starting on Wednesday, July 2, in Springfield. According to a History Museum on the Square press release, the museum is opening an exhibit called Roadside Gems: Rediscovering Route 66's Cultural Attractions from July 2 to September 14. This is the fourth installment of the five-part Route 66 exhibit series, which is setting up for the national Centennial Celebration in Springfield in 2026, the release says. Artists wanted for Route 66 sculpture project The summer exhibit will include information on where travelers ate, slept and filled up their gas tanks on their drive through the historic highway. Visitors to the exhibit will learn about the Jewell Theater, the rise of the Ozark Jubilee, the hidden caves, public parks and the early days of the Springfield Cardinals. 'We're thrilled to showcase the cultural heartbeat of Springfield along Route 66,' Sean FitzGibbons, executive director of the History Museum on the Square, said in the release. 'Our previous exhibits explored the essentials of a road trip; places to eat, sleep, and fuel up. But Roadside Gems is about the why. It celebrates the quirky, the majestic and everything in between. These are the stops that turned a road trip into an adventure. When people say the journey is just as important as the destination, these cultural gems are what they mean.' No June swoon for Springfield Cards
Hello everyone, I'm Dan Lucy on the Ozarks First digital desk. The Springfield Cardinals are loving the month of June. In our Cardinals Nation update. The baby birds have played eight games in the month of June. And Springfield has won seven of them. That includes Tuesday night's 8-3 victory over Tulsa. In that game, Springfield's right fielder Joshua Baez hit two home runs. The first came in the first inning and gave Springfield a 3-0 lead. The second came in the fifth inning. Springfield would beat the Drillers by five. The Cardinals still own a three game lead on the Texas League North with 11 games left in the first half of the season. If Springfield can stay in first, it'll earn a playoff ticket. The Double AA franchise won the first half last year. And the team has never won back to back playoff tickets in franchise history. For more sports watch Ozarks First news at nine and ten. And I'll see you then. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
