Handloom Day celebrated with fervour across central districts
The 11th edition of the National Handloom Day was celebrated with a host of exhibitions and special programmes on Thursday.
In Tiruchi, an exhibition of handloom garments and linen was inaugurated at the Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi in the presence of T. Ravikumar, Assistant Director of Handlooms, Tiruchi, college principal M. Pitchaimani and senior officials.
Approximately 15 stalls representing weaving clusters in Tiruchi district participated in the expo.
Minister for Higher Education Govi. Chezhiaan launched a special health camp and an exhibition of handloom textiles at the premises of Thirubuvanam Silk Handloom Weavers Cooperative Production and Sale Society, Thanjavur district, in the presence of Kumbakonam MLA K. Anbalagan on Thursday. Welfare assistance worth ₹25 lakh was presented to weavers. A special stamp to mark the day was also released by the Postal Department in the presence of society Deputy Director G. Sankareswari and senior officials.
According to an official press release, the Minister gave ₹50,000 each as loan to five weavers under the Mudra Scheme and financial aid of ₹1.86 lakh to four weavers under the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Handlooms Weavers' Savings and Security Scheme. Weaving equipment and tools worth ₹3,600 each was given to five weavers.
Over 250 persons benefited from a special health camp organised at the premises of Manamedu Devanga Handloom Weavers Cooperative Production and Sale Society in Manamedu village near Tiruchi.
In Karur, V. Senthilbalaji, MLA, inaugurated a sale-cum-expo of handloom goods and presented welfare assistance worth ₹10.84 lakh to 34 weavers, in the presence of District Collector M. Thangavel.
