Handloom Day celebrated with fervour across central districts
In Tiruchi, an exhibition of handloom garments and linen was inaugurated at the Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi in the presence of T. Ravikumar, Assistant Director of Handlooms, Tiruchi, college principal M. Pitchaimani and senior officials.
Approximately 15 stalls representing weaving clusters in Tiruchi district participated in the expo.
Minister for Higher Education Govi. Chezhiaan launched a special health camp and an exhibition of handloom textiles at the premises of Thirubuvanam Silk Handloom Weavers Cooperative Production and Sale Society, Thanjavur district, in the presence of Kumbakonam MLA K. Anbalagan on Thursday. Welfare assistance worth ₹25 lakh was presented to weavers. A special stamp to mark the day was also released by the Postal Department in the presence of society Deputy Director G. Sankareswari and senior officials.
According to an official press release, the Minister gave ₹50,000 each as loan to five weavers under the Mudra Scheme and financial aid of ₹1.86 lakh to four weavers under the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Handlooms Weavers' Savings and Security Scheme. Weaving equipment and tools worth ₹3,600 each was given to five weavers.
Over 250 persons benefited from a special health camp organised at the premises of Manamedu Devanga Handloom Weavers Cooperative Production and Sale Society in Manamedu village near Tiruchi.
In Karur, V. Senthilbalaji, MLA, inaugurated a sale-cum-expo of handloom goods and presented welfare assistance worth ₹10.84 lakh to 34 weavers, in the presence of District Collector M. Thangavel.

Naik Deepchand was born on April 5, 1975, in Hisar, Haryana. While in Class 12, he was called to join artillery training in Nasik. Encouraged by friends and inspired by his grandfather's war stories, he joined the Army in 1994. His first posting was in Firozpur for three years. In 1998, he was sent to Srinagar and later fought in the Kargil War in 1999. Remembering the Battle of Tololing, he told The Quint, "It was very cold that day. As many as 10,000 rounds were fired by our battalion." During his service, he took part in Operation Rakshak in Jammu and Kashmir, Operation Vijay in Kargil, and Operation Parakram. In Kargil, his unit changed gun positions eight times and fired nearly 10,000 shells, earning 12 gallantry awards. In Operation Parakram, a bomb blast in Secunderabad cost him a hand and both legs. The operation was a major military build-up by India from December 2001 to October 2002 after the terrorist attack on Parliament. Thousands of troops, tanks, and aircraft were moved to the India-Pakistan border to put pressure on Pakistan to act against terror groups. Today, Mr Deepchand runs the Ideal Soldier Foundation, which builds memorials, hoists the national flag, and supports injured and martyred soldiers and their families. In 2024, he began a tribute journey from Mumbai to honour martyrs at the Dras War Memorial and Siachen Galwan.

The celebration culminated in a Handloom Fashion Showcase and a series of cultural performances. Fashion Design students presented contemporary silhouettes crafted entirely from traditional handloom fabrics, illustrating how age-old weaving techniques can be reinterpreted for modern aesthetics. The energy of the event was amplified by dynamic dance performances, symbolizing the rhythm, color, and spirit of India's artisanal traditions. ‘Agal Vilakku' scheme launched to safeguard girls, promote cyber safety in Tamil Nadu
PUDUKKOTTAI: School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Saturday launched the 'Agal Vilakku' scheme at Keeramangalam Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Pudukkottai. The scheme aims at safeguarding girl students (Classes 9-12) from mental, physical, and social challenges, with a strong focus on cyber safety. The state has allocated `50 lakh to implement the scheme in all higher secondary schools. Awareness booklets on the issue prepared by the State Council of Educational Research and Training were distributed to all students on the occasion. Under the initiative, committees of teachers and students will identify problems faced by girl students and suggest solutions. Also, sessions will be conducted by teachers trained in career guidance through the District Institute of Education and Training. These teachers will also be given additional training to raise awareness of safe internet use and protection from cyber threats. Psychological counselling will also be provided as part of the programme. Explaining the sentimental choice of Pudukkottai for the scheme's launch, the minister said it was to honour Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy, a pioneer in women's education and empowerment. Addressing the media, the minister said the scheme emphasises on the safe and responsible use of the internet.
