Shah Rukh Khan Didn't Want His Baazigar Character To Have A Dark Past

Filmmaker Sriram Raghavan, known for his thrillers, recently shared that he once wrote a story that turned out to be very similar to Baazigar — without realising it at the time. In a chat with Pinkvilla, he said he noticed the overlap much later. He also spoke about how Shah Rukh Khan had strong ideas about how the lead character should be shown, and that he wasn't fully convinced by the version directed by Abbas-Mustan. Sriram Raghavan revealed that his version of the story was strongly inspired by the novel A Kiss Before Dying, which had been made into a Hollywood film and later loosely adapted into Baazigar. He said his script followed the book more closely. In his version, the main character is a psychopath whose only goal is to marry into a rich family. 'I was more faithful to the book. And in the book, the guy is just a psychopath… uska kya hai… he wants to get married rich… usko ek ameer ghar mein shaadi karna hai. Aur usmein kya hai, the first girl he loves… she loves him too. But she gets pregnant, and her father is so orthodox ki usko malum ho gaya hai ki aisa kuch hua hai."

When Sriram Raghavan Almost made Baazigar With Shah Rukh Khan

Sriram Raghavan admitted being very impressed with the story of a novel and wanted to make a film on it. Counted as one of Shah Rukh Khan 's finest films, 1993's Baazigar remains a fan favourite to date. From the actors' strong performances to the intense dialogues and an intense plot, the Abbas-Mustan directorial turned into a Bollywood gem. While the director duo received much acclaim for their work in the film, not many know that filmmaker Sriram Raghavan also worked on a similar script as Baazigar and even wanted to make a film on it. Known for directing films like Badlapur and Andhadhun, Raghavan, in a recent interview, recalled an anecdote from his struggling days. Speaking to Pinkvilla, Sriram Raghavan shared that he was quite impressed after reading a novel in his initial days in Bollywood and even wanted to make a film on it. 'I was just a guy with the story, so then I started writing that, and I had finished a version of it," he continued. The director further revealed that he discussed the idea with Tinnu Anand, only to learn that a film based on the particular novel was already being made, and he, too, was acting in it. While he might have failed to direct the film, Sriram Raghavan did not miss the chance to watch Baazigar in the theatres and witness the audience enjoying it. Further in the conversation, the filmmaker shared that he would have made the film a bit differently, focusing on making it more like the original novel. He said that the original story is based on a psychopath who wants to become a millionaire and kiss three girls to fulfill his dream. Not just that, he even met Baazigar star Shah Rukh Khan and the film's original director, Abbas-Mustan, and shared the entire scenario. On pitching the story of Vidhu Vinod Chopra, he got the suggestion to make it more entertaining with some songs. Rest assured, Baazigar arrived as a turning point for Shah Rukh Khan, showing him as an anti-hero. The film also features actors Kajol, Shilpa Shetty and Johny Lever. Having completed 31 years since its release, fans have now been speculating about a potential sequel with the superstar back in action. First Published:
