Giants' Cam Skattebo Gearing Up for Fred Warner Matchup

Giants' Cam Skattebo Gearing Up for Fred Warner Matchup originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Every NFL player has a 'welcome to the league' moment. Very few actively seek them out. New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo isn't short on confidence. With elite physicality and a knack for getting the most out of his short-yardage attempts, he's bound to see playing time, too. Advertisement The league's best will be waiting for him on the other side of the line of scrimmage, waiting to test just how much power is packed into his 219-pound frame. On the 'St. Brown Podcast' with brothers Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown, Skattebo opened up about who he wanted to play most. The Giants' rookie circled San Francisco 49ers superstar Fred Warner on his 2025 schedule. "I've talked to Fred a couple times," Skattebo said. Skattebo, a Rio Linda, California, native, was naturally a fan of the 49ers growing up. He went to Sacramento State before transferring to Arizona State and rising to cult hero status during the College Football Playoff. Advertisement At the end of Day 2, Skattebo's fall was coming to an end, and he even thought his hometown team would draft him. Fortunately for the New York faithful, that wasn't the case. "I actually thought I was going to end up going to San Francisco with that 100th pick," Skattebo said, per Joaquin Ruiz of NBC Sports Bay Area. "Vibes started getting high, lights started turning on, videos started turning on, and no phone call. "So we woke up at 9:00 a.m. the next morning on Saturday, and we knew it was going be within the first 10 picks because the Niners, the Giants, Tennessee, and somebody else had another pick back to back to back, and I knew one of those teams were going to take me. I didn't know which one. And then the Giants called." New York will host the 49ers in Week 9, between trips to face the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears. By then, Skattebo will have more than enough time to earn significant playing time as the complement to Tyrone Tracy Jr., potentially setting up the opportunity to meet Warner at full speed. Cam Skattebo thought he ruined chance with New York Giants during top 30 visit

Cam Skattebo thought he ruined chance with New York Giants during top 30 visit When the New York Giants called running back Cam Skattebo to inform him that he would be selected with the 105th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, he was genuinely shocked. Cameras caught Skattebo's emotional reaction to the announcement and as it turns out, there was more to that story than met the eye. Skattebo did not expect the Giants to come calling and believed he had blown his chance with the team during his top 30 visit in early April. "I never thought it was going to be New York cause I was actually late to the first meeting ever, on my 30 visit," he said on the St. Brown Podcast. "I was five minutes late to the bus pickup. I thought I was cooked there." Had Tom Coughlin, who was notorious for clock-watching, still been the team's head coach, Skattebo very well may have been "cooked." Coughlin considered you on time if you were five minutes early, so arriving late would have been viewed as a major red flag. General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were obviously more lenient. "Getting the call on draft night, it's like, 'Hey, you're going to be a New York Giant,'" Skattebo said. "I'm like, 'holy cow.' "After I was drafted and they FaceTimed me, I told them I'll never be late again." Not only did Skattebo believe he had blown his chance with the Giants, but he expected the San Francisco 49ers to call his name five picks earlier at No. 100 overall. Instead, they selected cornerback Upton Stout. That was a blessing for the Giants, who thought they would have to choose between Skattebo and offensive lineman Marcus Mbow. They ended up with both.

Cam Skattebo reveals embarrassing reason he never expected Giants to draft him

Cam Skattebo thought he blew his chance with the Giants before the draft. The Arizona State product revealed that he didn't make the best first impression when meeting with the franchise in an appearance on the 'St. Brown Podcast.' 'I never thought it was going to be New York cause I was actually late to the first meeting ever, on my 30 visit,' Skattebo said. 'I was five minutes late to the bus pickup. I thought I was cooked there.' 'Getting the call on draft night, it's like, 'Hey, you're going to be a New York Giant,'' Skattebo said. 'I'm like, 'holy cow.'' The running back vowed to never make the same mistake again. 'After I was drafted and they FaceTimed me, I told them I'll never be late again,' Skattebo said. Skattebo entered Giants rookie camp with that same type of motivation. 'How many snaps of the NFL have you seen me play?'' Skattebo said when asked about how he maintains his work ethic. 'Zero, right? I've proved nothing. I've proved what I am in college, but I've proved nothing at this level. 'So now where I'm at, I have to prove myself, and if that's for five years or if that's for 10 years, I'm going to continue to prove myself. I'm the best, do it for the longest, so continue to do that and just work my butt off until time comes.'' Cam Skattebo at Giants rookie mini-camp on May 10, 2025. Robert Sabo for NY Post Skattebo broke out for the Sun Devils in 2024, going for a school-record 1,711 yards on the ground and scoring 21 touchdowns. He's trying to bring that same type of play to East Rutherford. 'Physical, downhill, get-to-the-end-zone back,'' Skattebo said of his playing style after being drafted by the Giants. 'I love to score touchdowns. That's what I do.''

Giants RB Cam Skattebo thought he'd be drafted by 49ers Show Caption Hide Caption Russell Wilson's 'back is against the wall' according to Jordan Palmer Jordan Palmer breaks down how Russell Wilson is experiencing something new with the New York Giants and his job stability. Sports Seriously The New York Giants began organized team activities (OTAs) this week in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with plenty of new faces on the roster. Quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston were both acquired via free agency and could end up starting for the Giants in 2025. There's also the team's second first-round pick, Jaxson Dart, who could be in line for a bigger role as the season wears on. Dart was the first of multiple selections on offense by the Giants in the 2025 NFL Draft. After New York took Dart in Round 1, the Giants selected running back Cam Skattebo in Round 4, offensive lineman Marcus Mbow in Round 5 and tight end Thomas Fidone II in Round 7. Skattebo wasn't sure he'd be taken by the Giants in the draft. In fact, he thought a different NFC team would come calling for his services. "I actually thought I was going to go to San Francisco with that 100th pick," Skattebo said on the May 28 episode of the "St. Brown Podcast". "(But) no phone call." The 49ers ended up taking Western Kentucky cornerback Upton Stout with the 100th overall pick, the third-to-last selection of Day 2. "So we woke up, 9 a.m. the next morning on Saturday and we knew it was going to be within the first 10 picks because the 49ers, Giants, Tennessee and somebody else had another pick back-to-back-to-back," Skattebo said. "And I knew one of those teams was going to take me. I didn't know which one and then the Giants called and emotions poured." He didn't have to wait long on Day 3. New York selected him with the third pick of the day at No. 105 overall. Skattebo was the eighth running back taken in the 2025 NFL Draft, one pick after the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Virginia Tech's Bhayshul Tuten. San Francisco did end up drafting a running back on Day 3 with Oregon's Jordan James in the fifth round, No. 147 overall. A total of 25 running backs were selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, the fifth-most of any position. Wide receiver had the most picks with 31 followed by defensive tackle (30), cornerback (29), linebacker (26) and running back.

Lions Rookie Isaac TeSlaa Shares His Hatred for the Green Bay Packers

The Detroit Lions made a surprising decision in the third round of this year's NFL Draft. They traded their third-round pick along with two third rounders in next year's draft to move up to pick 70 and select wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa. Advertisement The move was seen as a bit of a reach at the time as TeSlaa wasn't all that productive in his two years at Arkansas. That narrative has been changing a bit since the draft as it was revealed there were multiple other teams who could have selected TeSlaa around pick 70 and the Lions faced competition to trade for the pick. Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaaJunfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Now he has taken a step to endear himself to fans that might make them happier with the pick. During the most recent episode of the "St. Brown Podcast" TeSlaa told new teammate Amon-Ra St. Brown that he already hates the Green Bay Packers. TeSlaa told St. Brown, "I hate the Packers with a burning passion." Advertisement TeSlaa already having strong feelings about the Lions' rivals shouldn't come as a big surprise. The rookie receiver grew up in Michigan and has been rooting for the Lions for years. He even mentioned on the podcast that he had shown up to his pre-draft visit with the Lions wearing a custom Lions jersey that had his high school jersey number on it. Luckily for TeSlaa, he won't have to wait very long to put his hatred of the Packers to good use. The Lions are scheduled to head to Green Bay for a Week 1 matchup against their division rival. TeSlaa can quickly help Lions fans forget how much he cost if he puts together a solid performance in that matchup.
