Jack Backus honored with Chamber Appreciation Award

OGDENSBURG, N.Y. (WWTI) – The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce will honor Jack Backus with the Chamber Appreciation Award at its annual Membership Breakfast Meeting on Tuesday, April 15, at the Inn at Gran View in Ogdensburg. Backus has served on the Chamber's Board of Directors for decades, is being honored for his long-standing contributions to the Chamber, dedication to the county's communities and leadership at Mort Backus & Sons, a family-owned business with community support at its core. One nomination for Backus noted that even in his retirement, he 'still shows up to every meeting and event and is a bright and shining staple in the St. Lawrence County community…He is a great ambassador for the chamber and really cares about the community and small business.' Another nomination said Backus was always 'vocal about our members and supporting local businesses, making sure their best interests are being looked after.' Others expressed their appreciation for the thoughtful insights and questions he brings to his fellow Board members, along with recognition of the great things about St. Lawrence County. The annual breakfast meeting, which begins at 8:30 a.m., will also include appointments to the Board of Directors and Officers, as well as updates from Chamber leadership on previous accomplishments and goals for the coming year. ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. (WWTI) – The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce welcomed restaurant and food enthusiast Anothony Tringale of 'Eat Local New York' for two private culinary tours that highlighted some of the county's independent restaurants. The trips, organized as part of the Chamber's ongoing destination development initiatives, aimed to raise awareness of the region's dining alternatives. These activities aim to attract more consumers to local eateries, thereby supporting a thriving food scene in the County's rural towns. 'Bringing Anthony here was an ideal way for us to promote our local restaurant scene in an authentic way,' said Tiffani Amo, Director of Tourism for the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. 'The food itineraries we've published online are important marketing tools for our more traditional tourism promotion efforts, but this type of social media exposure and engagement is something that resonates with both visitors and residents in a completely different way. It's also a unique and exciting form of promotion for local business owners, which is important because we want them to be engaged and invested in how they're represented through a tourism lens.' The Cheesecake Factory's original menu was 1 page, and it was missing this popular staple Tringale's first visit took place on November 1, 2024, with stops at: Foster the Plant in Potsdam; Barking Dog Saloon in Potsdam; Hoof and Horn Butcher and Einery in Potsdam; Jake's On the Winer in Hannawa Falls; Sabad's in Norfolk; and Blue House in Madrid. Returning on March 28, 2025, he explored another set of restaurants, including: Wimpy's Inn in Ogdensburg; The Place in Ogdensburg; Gristmill Brewery in Massena; and 1844 House in Potsdam. The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce will host the 5th Annual North Country Kids Expo from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, March 8 at the Roos House at SUNY Canton. Kids and families alike will experience a day filled with activities, play zones, on-site demonstrations, and the chance to gather information from local businesses, organizations and vendors who cater to families of the North Country. Admission for adults and children over13 is $5. Children 12 and under can enter the event for free. The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce is inviting businesses, their teams and their partners to the next Business After Hours networking event at the 11 West restaurant at 6182 US Highway 11 in Canton. This event will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. It will be a casual evening networking with businesses from across the North Country with light appetizers. Celebrate Winterfest activities and support St. Lawrence County businesses, communities and organizations.
