St John Ambulance Cymru launches new Just in Case podcast

St John Ambulance Cymru has launched Just in Case: Stories from St John to share real-life accounts of emergencies, recoveries, and the volunteers behind them. Richard Lee, chief executive of St John Ambulance Cymru, said: "Our St John people are out and about in your community every day, providing falls services and mental health, and GP support services on behalf of the NHS. "Our youth services are developing the next generation of healthcare providers, whilst we are training 30,000 people in first aid each year and providing cover at 1,000 events. "I'm looking forward to our new podcast showcasing this work, and what better way to start than by hearing about a life saved by our St John people." Hosted by the charity's partnership and relationship manager Sam Cook, the monthly podcast is available on all major platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Role of volunteer paramedics celebrated on special day

International Paramedics Day is celebrated each year and the theme for this year is unity and community. St John Ambulance Cymru and the Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust are sharing special thank you messages from senior leaders on social media, as well as highlighting the stories of some of the paramedics who balance volunteering with their day-to-day lifesaving work. St John Ambulance Cymru chief executive Richard Lee said: 'My 30 years to date as a registered paramedic have seen me meet all sorts of amazing people and taken me to places I never imagined. 'The skills that paramedics bring to our community of St John People are so important to support the work we do across the country, from major events at stadiums and arenas such as the recent Oasis concerts in Cardiff, to local celebrations on your doorstep.' In 2024, the more than 90 Paramedics who volunteer with St John Ambulance Cymru dedicated 5,284 hours of their spare time to the charity including being part of the teams providing event first aid cover, to being Volunteer Alternative Responders.

Royal Welsh Show urges visitors to have fun and take care

A safety campaign is encouraging visitors to 'have fun, take care and stay safe' during the Royal Welsh Show. The campaign will take place in and around Builth Wells during the week of the show and will include posters, banners and other messaging across licensed venues and public areas. Organised by the Builth Wells Events Safety Group, the campaign aims to reduce public risk and promote a safe environment through 'creative and humorous' messaging. Cllr Richard Church, Powys County Council's cabinet member for a safer Powys, said: "The Royal Welsh Show is a highlight in many people's calendars, and draws in tens of thousands of visitors to Builth Wells and the surrounding area every year. "Following the launch of the Have Fun, Take Care, Stay Safe campaign in 2022, it's great to see that it's returning for this year's show as a humorous way to communicate an important message for those in and around Builth Wells during Royal Welsh Show week. "Of course, we want our visitors to have a great time. "It's a social occasion and a perfect opportunity to meet up with those you may not have seen for a while, but please drink and behave responsibly and look after yourselves and your friends". Additional safety measures will include the Green Route safe walking path, a medical and wellbeing centre at Strand Hall operated by St John Ambulance Cymru, and a pop-up help point at The Groe run by Powys County Council's youth service. Street pastors and youth workers will also be on hand to offer welfare support late into the night. Visitors will have access to free mobile phone charging, water donated by Radnor Hills, and drug amnesty boxes at key entry points. Aled Rhys Jones, chief executive of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, said: "As we look ahead to the 2025 Royal Welsh Show, we're proud to continue our strong partnership with the Builth Wells Events Safety Group.

Tenby Mayor re-elected for third consecutive term

ST JOHN Ambulance Cymru is highlighting the huge contribution nurses make to support our work in communities across Wales, as the charity prepares to mark International Nurses' Day 2025 on May 12th. This year, the first aid charity for Wales will be celebrating the nurses who volunteer on its behalf with a special thank you message from senior leaders, while also telling the stories of those who balance their role in the nursing profession with their volunteer efforts on its social media channels. St John Ambulance Cymru Chief Executive, Richard Lee said: 'We are extremely fortunate to be supported by around 100 registered nurses, who last year alone provided 3,000 hours of community support right across Wales. 'As well as volunteering their precious time to support people who need help and delivering our mission to make Wales a community of lifesavers, they bring with them more than 1,600 years of nursing experience and account for more than half of the healthcare professionals who support our first aiders. 'We are proud of the work we do alongside our friends at the Royal College of Nursing to create the next generation of nurses though our contribution to the Kings Nursing Cadet Scheme. Many of our nurses tell me they prepared for their nursing career through youth activity with St John. 'We simply cannot thank our nurses enough for all the expert treatment they provide to patients, the specialist advice they give us, the training they deliver to our St John People and everything they do to support people across Wales. Diolch o galon!' International Nurses' Day is celebrated on May 12th every year to commemorate the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth, and is held to raise awareness of the profession and the challenges nurses face. As part of the events to mark the occasion, St John Ambulance Cymru will be represented at the 60th Florence Nightingale Commemoration Service to be held at Westminster Abbey on May 12th.
