Man charged after 7-hour car chase

A man who was arrested after a prolonged high-speed chase through the Melbourne suburbs has been slapped with a hefty charge sheet featuring allegations of dozens of offences. Victoria Police released the charge sheet for a 36-year-old man who they allege stole a van on Melbourne's St Kilda Road at around 5:40am on Friday July 11. The subsequent police chase took the van and pursuing vehicles through Footscray, Melbourne, Port Melbourne, Spotswood, Carnegie, Sunshine, Dandenong and Point Cook as news helicopters captured the wild scenes on camera. A spokeswoman for Victoria Police said police would allege in court that 'the van was involved in collisions with several parked and moving vehicles, while being driven erratically and at high speed'. 'Luckily, there were no serious injuries. After crashing into a street sign at the intersection of Dunnings Road and Palmers Road in Point Cook, the van came to a stop just after 1pm,' she said. Footage of the dramatic arrest showed the man bail out of the damaged van's window onto a busy road as the vehicle continued to roll forward. The man stepped directly into the path of a pursuing police vehicle, before it strikes him and he is thrown into the air. Multiple officers then leapt out of the police car and arrested the man as he tried to get up. More to come.

Man charged after leaping from van after dramatic police chase through Melbourne

A man has been charged with a string of alleged offences following a dramatic police chase through Melbourne last week. Helicopter footage showed a damaged white van driving erratically through traffic on the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne's inner west just before 1pm on Friday. Victoria Police said it had been reported stolen from St Kilda Road about 5:40am, and was later spotted in Footscray. It was followed by the police chopper and officers on the ground as it sped through suburbs including Melbourne, Port Melbourne, Spotswood, Carnegie, Sunshine, Dandenong and Point Cook. The van could be seen hitting light poles on Dunnings Road in Point Cook before slowing. A man then jumped through the driver's side window while the van was still moving, and was hit by an unmarked police car on the road. A 36-year-old man from Point Cook was arrested and taken to hospital where he was treated under police guard. On Tuesday night, police charged him with dozens of offences, including 12 counts of reckless conduct endangering life, 17 counts of reckless conduct endangering serious injury, aggravated reckless exposure of a police officer to risk by driving, dangerous driving whilst being pursued by police, burglary and committing an offence while on bail. The man is scheduled to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. No-one was seriously injured during Friday's incidents.
