According to a release, 40 people died in ATV/UTV crashes statewide in 2024, most of whom were not wearing helmets. Appleton Police Department partnering with Herrling Clark Law Firm to giveaway bike helmets All occupants, including an ATV or UTV operator, should wear a helmet approved by the Department of Transportation. Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collects 12k pounds of food in Wayne County

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCT) — The National Association of Letter Carriers held their annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive recently. Around 12,920 pounds of nonperishable food were collected by mail carriers on Saturday, May 10. They fell a little short of their goal, which was 15,000 pounds. This was the association's 33rd year holding the food. 'We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our community,' said Stacy Sinyard, Vice President of NALC Branch 876 and local food drive coordinator. 'Every can, every hour volunteered, and every act of kindness has a ripple effect. We may not have reached our goal this year, but the impact is real—and we're already optimistic about coming back even stronger next year.' The food drive benefited the Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro, HGDC Community Crisis Center, The Salvation Army, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 4 Day Movement and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's CHIPP Program. Twin brother of Augusta County sheriff pleads guilty to felony drug charge

STAUNTON — The twin brother of Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith appeared in Staunton Circuit Court on May 6, where he pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge. Ronald W. Smith, 42, of Churchville, was convicted of possession of a Schedule I or II drug. On Oct. 15, 2023, Smith was involved in a vehicle crash near Churchville Avenue and Va. 262, according to Staunton Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Matt Falwell. At the scene, Falwell said Smith began acting erratically and tried to walk away from police. Following a struggle, he was taken down to the ground and restrained. Smith was found to have a glass smoking device and a little less than three grams of methamphetamine, resulting in the felony drug charge. Prior to being sentenced, he apologized to his brother, Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith, who did not attend the hearing, as well as to other family members. "I'm very sorry," said Smith, who was in a wheelchair after suffering a fall while previously jailed. In a joint recommendation, Smith, who was represented by Staunton Public Defender Duane Barron, was sentenced to two years in prison with two years suspended, giving him no time to serve. He was also placed on two years of supervised probation. Smith, though, is still facing charges in Augusta County for an unrelated incident that took place a little more than two months after his Staunton arrest. During the late-afternoon hours of Dec. 26, 2023, Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith called his office and requested assistance with getting a stolen vehicle stopped. The vehicle, a semi-truck, was his. The sheriff said his brother was behind the wheel of the 2000 International that had a goose-neck trailer attached, and said he tried stopping the truck near the intersection of Churchville Avenue and Eagle Rock Lane but was unsuccessful. Authorities chased the semi to Verona, using a tire-deflation devices along the way. The chase ended at Clymore Elementary School, where Ronald Smith allegedly rammed a deputy's vehicle and reportedly attempted to pin a second deputy's vehicle between the semi and trailer. In May 2024, the Augusta County grand jury indicted Smith on two charges of attempted malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, along with single felony charges of destruction of property and eluding. He's also facing a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated (first offense), according to court records. "Smith's life is completely different now, and he spends his time fighting for every little bit of movement he can recover after suffering devastating injuries while he was in jail," Barron said. Smith has a one-day jury trial set for Sept. 18 in Augusta County Circuit Court. The prosecution of the case is being handled by the Charlottesville Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. Smith remains free on bond. Stamp Out Hunger food drive aims to stock summer shelves

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – Saturday your mailbox could be more than just a stop for letters – it can be a powerful way to fight hunger in the Coastal Empire. The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, now in its 33rd year, is led by the National Association of Letter Carriers. This one-day event couldn't come at a more crucial time for families in Coastal Georgia. The shelves at Second Harvest Food Bank are in urgent need of restocking as summer nears. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the nation's largest single-day food drive, collecting nearly 2 billion pounds of non-perishable goods since it started. Saturday you can leave food donations like canned vegetables, peanut butter and canned meats next to your mailbox. Letter carriers will pick up the food during their regular mail delivery and deliver it directly to food banks. With schools closing soon, many children will face hunger. Second Harvest's summer feeding program serves over 7,000 meals a day across 85 sites starting in June. Mary Jane Crouch, Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia told News 3 the event means everything to them '[One year in the past,] we had over 100,000 pounds donated to us. And we've had lesser years when, you know, maybe the economy wasn't doing so great. And people, as we said earlier, are struggling. So, we're really worried about this year. We're hoping people can pick up that extra couple of cans at the grocery store, pick up that extra jar of peanut butter. It will make a huge difference.' The food drive is Saturday, May 10th. Just place a bag of nonperishable items next to your mailbox in the morning. The postal service will handle the rest, delivering the food to Second Harvest. Last year, Second Harvest collected 34,00 pounds through the Stamp Out Hunger food drive and they hope to reach 50,000 pounds this year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
