IND vs ENG 3rd Test: 'He did enough' - Former India captain makes bold statement on batter's future after 'brain fade' moment

Brydon Carse of England celebrates dismissing Karun Nair of India during Day Four of the 3rd Rothesay Test Match between England and India at Lord's Cricket Ground (Photo by) Former India captain Anil Kumble believes India should avoid making too many changes for the fourth Test against England in Manchester. The veteran also backed India No 3 Karun Nair to keep his place in the team despite India's 22-run loss at Lord's. With the loss at Lord's, England now lead the five-match series 2-1, with the next Test starting on July 23. Asked if changes were needed and whether Nair should stay in the XI, Kumble said, " I don't want to make too many changes because I think India have played a fantastic game. Yes, they lost by 22 runs. Unless injuries, we don't know about Rishabh Pant." Backing the 33-year-old for the upcoming Test, Kumble added, " He certainly keeps his place. He did enough in the first innings. In the second innings, it was probably a brain fade, but he was batting well. That partnership was crucial ." Kumble referred to Nair's 61-run partnership with KL Rahul in the first innings, which helped protect captain Shubman Gill from facing the new ball early. India vs England: India fall short at Lord's, England lead series 2-1 "If he had gotten out early, then maybe Shubman Gill exposed slightly earlier with the new ball. We know that the first 20 or 25 overs were crucial. I think he will still keep his place. He was unfortunate that he got out. It was a brilliant catch by Joe Root. Probably give him one more opportunity," Kumble said on Star Sports' Follow the Blues, . Nair scored 40 runs in the first innings before being caught by Joe Root off Ben Stokes. In the second innings, he made 14 and was trapped lbw by Brydon Carse. Kumble also praised Ravindra Jadeja's recent batting contributions, especially from the lower order. When asked if lower-order runs were India's biggest positive from Lord's, he said, "The first Test, when India lost, the contribution from the lower order was nothing in the two innings, and since then, Ravindra Jadeja has certainly stepped up with his batting. He certainly will feel confident, and the team management will also feel so much more confident that the lower order is now contributing." Poll Should India make changes to the team for the fourth Test against England? Yes, they need to change some players No, they should keep the same team Only if there are injuries Kumble noted Jadeja's ability to build partnerships with both top and lower-order players. " He has been the sole sort of leader in that middle order to hold the innings, not just with a recognized batter, and putting together a partnership, but also ensuring that the lower order starts contributing along with him, and those partnerships that he has had, even in the first innings with Nitish Kumar Reddy, second innings with him, and of course, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj," he said. Jadeja scored 72 and 61* in the two innings at Lord's, guiding India from a precarious position of 82/7 in the second innings. The veteran's marathon stand however, went up in vain with the 'unlucky' wicket of Mohammed Siraj at the hands of spinner Shoaib Bashir, falling 22 runs short of what would have been an iconic win. IND vs ENG 3rd Test: 'Boring cricket' - Shubman Gill takes aim at England batters

Shubman Gill of India talks with Umpire Sharfuddoula about an issue with the ball during Day One of the Test Match at Lord's (Image by) The third Test between India and England at Lord's has already delivered plenty of action on Day 1, with a mix of sharp bowling, injury concerns and on-field banter adding to the drama. India's Nitish Kumar Reddy struck early to stun the English top order, removing Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in the same over. The double blow slowed down England's scoring rate and shifted the momentum towards the visitors. Amid the tension, India captain Shubman Gill provided a moment of light-hearted humour. As England batters became more cautious and began leaving more deliveries, Gill took a playful dig. When one such ball from Jasprit Bumrah was left alone, Gill was heard saying, 'No more entertaining cricket boys. Welcome back to the boring Test cricket,' in a moment shared on Star Sports' X handle. EXCLUSIVE: Shubman Gill-led Team India had a fun evening in London At the time, England's run rate had dipped to 2.95, uncharacteristic of the Bazball era. In fact, this is just the second time in 72 innings under Ben Stokes' leadership that England have gone at under 3 runs per over in the first 40 overs of a Test innings. Meanwhile, India were dealt a scare as wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant appeared to injure his finger during the session. The vice-captain chipped his index finger and receieved icing in the dressing room. There is no major concern for the 27-year-old. At tea, England were 153/2,looking to rebuild with Joe Root and Ollie Pope at the crease, as both sides continue to fight for control in this evenly poised Test. 'More than I go to Lord's': 'Birthday boy' Sunil Gavaskar picks Wimbledon over 'Home of Cricket', predicts final

Sunil Gavaskar (Image) As cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar celebrated his 76th birthday on Thursday, July 10, the former India captain made headlines off the field — this time for his take on Wimbledon 2025. In a lively conversation with former Indian tennis star and commentator Vijay Amritraj, Gavaskar shared his Wimbledon final prediction and weighed in on the remaining contenders. While he lauded Spain's Carlos Alcaraz for playing the 'best tennis' among the current field, he also tipped Novak Djokovic to reach the final by beating Jannik Sinner in the semis. Citing Djokovic's loss to Alcaraz in last year's final at SW19, Gavaskar expressed hope that the Serbian would pull off 'one final win to make it 25', referring to Djokovic's quest for a 25th Grand Slam title. Comparing his fondness for Wimbledon with cricket's spiritual home, Gavaskar remarked, 'Every time I'm in England around this time, I go to Wimbledon. But I hardly ever go to Lord's, if it's not a final. You could say that I come here more often than I go to Lord's,' the former cricketer told Vijay Amritraj in a clip posted on Star Sports' official X handle. Gavaskar remains one of the most revered figures in Indian cricket. He played 233 international matches, scoring 13,214 runs, including 35 centuries. He was the first batter to reach 10,000 Test runs and earned widespread acclaim for his mastery against the world's best fast bowlers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Poll Do you believe Djokovic can win his 25th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon 2025? IND vs ENG: 'Far too defensive' - Former India cricketer urges captain Shubman Gill to be more aggressive

Rishabh Pant with Shubman Gill (Getty Images) Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has weighed in on Shubman Gill 's captaincy in the wake of India's five-wicket defeat to England in the first Test at Headingley. While acknowledging Gill's composure and talent as a batter, Manjrekar cautioned the young skipper against being too defensive in his approach, especially when conditions are in India's favour. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Speaking on Star Sports' Game Plan, Manjrekar said Gill is 'sorted' as a batter at No. 4 and will only improve with experience. 'I just hope he can carry on after getting to a 108 or 120 because now he knows what could happen if he gets out. So that is something he will start doing,' he said. 03:11 India's Day 2 at the Nets in Edgbaston | IND vs ENG Test Series However, it was Gill's field placements and leadership that drew greater scrutiny. 'Overcast conditions, I know the ball wasn't doing too much, but they pre-empted the English approach and had a far too defensive field,' Manjrekar noted. 'I hate to bring Virat Kohli as a comparison because it's unfair on the young man, but you can just imagine Virat Kohli in that situation.' Poll Do you think Shubman Gill should adopt a more aggressive captaincy style? Yes, he needs to be more aggressive No, his current style is fine Maybe, depends on the situation Undecided 'Whether they would have got wickets or not, Kohli would have shown the opposition that he's trying to get them out. Gill is not that kind of personality, nor that kind of captain. But maybe don't go so defensive pre-empting things,' he added. Manjrekar also praised Rishabh Pant 's hunger and resilience, saying he is likely to carry his twin tons into the second Test. At the same time, he warned KL Rahul to maintain consistency. 'KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer. Indian cricket needs him badly,' he said. The second Test begins Wednesday at Edgbaston, with India trailing 0-1 in the five-match series. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
