Selangor to step up water conservation drive through regular sessions
SEKINCHAN: The Selangor government has proposed that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) hold regular briefing sessions with local authorities, traders, and community leaders to explain recent water tariff adjustments and promote public awareness of responsible water use. State Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said such sessions could be held several times a year and extended to schools and public campaigns, in collaboration with the Information Department, to foster long-term conservation habits. He said water-related topics should also be embedded in environmental campaigns, as water wastage affects the sustainability of natural resources. "This is not just a Selangor issue. "Span (National Water Services Commission) is implementing similar tariff adjustments across the country," he said after receiving the Selangor-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy at Pantai Redang here today. The Selangor government recently confirmed that domestic users consuming up to 20 cubic metres monthly will continue paying RM0.65 per cubic metre, with the minimum RM6.50 monthly charge unchanged. The rates had already been revised in February 2024. However, higher water usage will be subject to new rates under a revised tariff structure that takes effect on Sept 1 for consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, all of which are served by Air Selangor. Meanwhile, Ng also urged the Housing and Local Government Ministry to amend existing laws to stop foreigners from operating businesses through proxies by using the names of local spouses or associates to register licenses. He said such practices allow foreign-run premises to appear legal during enforcement checks, and stronger legal provisions are needed to empower local councils to act against these disguised business arrangements. "We do not allow any foreign individuals to operate businesses in any form. Locals must come first in our economic sectors." On July 28, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming also said local councils are prohibited from issuing licenses to foreigners for hawking, retail, food outlets, or any other trade activities, in accordance with existing by-laws. – Bernama

Selangor directs PBTs to fly Jalur Gemilang for National Day
SEKINCHAN: The Selangor government will issue a circular to all local authorities (PBT) to be distributed across the state regarding the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign in conjunction with the 68th National Day celebration this year. State Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the directive will apply to all premises, including government premises and agencies, as well as non-governmental organisations. 'Patriotic spirit is very important. Therefore, there needs to be a driving force to spark this spirit. We need to appreciate and remember the services of previous leaders and our independence fighters in building the nation. 'It is not easy for a small country that was previously unknown to rise and earn global respect. We must protect and defend what has been built,' he told reporters after receiving participants of the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy at the pitstop at Pantai Redang today. Ng said village heads and rukun tetangga associations also need to work in tandem with the state government to jointly ensure the national flag is displayed in every corner of Selangor's villages. He also called on teachers across the state to take a proactive role in instilling the spirit of patriotism among their students to preserve the meaning and value of independence. 'We do not want a society that simply enjoys peace and prosperity without understanding or having a soul that truly loves the nation,' he said. Earlier, Ng, who is also the Sekinchan Assemblyman, welcomed nearly 100 motorcyclists taking part in the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy. Sekinchan is the third stop for the convoy after visiting Salak Tinggi New Town Square and the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Square. The event concluded at the Sabak Assemblyman's Coordinating Office, where the baton was handed over to the Perak convoy for the next leg of the journey. - Bernama

Selangor may withdraw land approval for unused worship sites
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has the authority to revoke land approvals for non-Muslim houses of worship if the sites remain undeveloped within the stipulated timeframe. This was confirmed by State Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim during the Selangor State Assembly session. Ng explained that land reclaimed due to inactivity would be reassigned to other applicants in need. Since 2008, the Special Committee on Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, and Taoist Affairs (Limas) has approved 400 land plots for non-Muslim worship centres. However, failure to construct these facilities within the given period will result in the state reclaiming the land. The statement came in response to a supplementary question from Lwi Kian Keong (PH-Sungai Pelek), who sought clarification on the state's policy regarding unused worship land. - Bernama
