Hometown Hero – Maggie Holland, Providence Country Day
EAST PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) — This week's Cardi's Furniture & Mattresses Hometown Sports Hero is Maggie Holland. The Providence Country Day Senior has won three Individual and one Relay Gold Medal at the RIIL State Swim Meet. The Gold she won as a Sophomore, making her the first Knight to win a State Swim Title. 'She never takes anything lightly, every race that she races, she thinks about it, she worries about it, she works on it,' said PCD Swim Coach Kate Farrington. 'She focuses on something in that race that she's convinced that she's really going to work on. My turns, or my pull outs and it's a focus on swimming that not a lot of people have. But on the other hand, she's really just kind of fun. She's the real deal. She's got a really, really fun personality. She's the heart of the team.' Her success in the pool, earning her a scholarship to swim at Sacred Heart University, where she plans to study Nursing. 'It's going to be a lot, especially with Nursing,' Holland said. 'I'm definitely going to have to find that balance and just jump head first into all of the tasks that are going to be in the way of everything. But I feel like it's going to be good. PCD has also taught me a lot about managing all my time so I feel like I will be good.' Before she joins the Pioneers, Maggie would love to repeat her double at the State Meet. Five Individual Titles would cement her legacy as one of the State's best and give future Knights a big goal to chase. 'Two more golds would be really nice and just to leave that behind for the people that are coming up at PCD Swim, just to have something to loook up to and just know what they can accomplish in the future. I feel like, 'Yes, that's what I want to do.' 'I think the skies the limit for Maggie,' Farrington said. 'I would never say anything other about her swimming other than if she wants to achieve it, she will achieve it. And I'm just incredibly proud of the kid.'
