‘Yellowjackets' star Steven Krueger on his ‘amazing' bond with fiancée Candice King's kids — and their wedding plans

It was love at first bite. Steven Krueger and Candice King first met in 2013 while filming 'The Vampire Diaries' spinoff 'The Originals,' and now they are engaged. Not only is Krueger, 35, marrying King, 38, but he's gaining two step-daughters, as the 'Kingshighway' actress is mom to daughters Florence, 9, and Josephine, 4, with ex-husband Joe King. They are the sweetest children,' Krueger gushed exclusively to The Post at a fundraiser for the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firefighter's Fund put on by the Television Academy Foundation last Sunday. (The actress filed for divorce from the Fray guitarist in April 2022 after nearly seven years of marriage.) Advertisement 'I have two nieces, so I've been around young girls before, but they are truly the most wonderful human beings ever, and we have such a great relationship. It's very sweet I get to take them on as well.' After going Instagram official in 2023, the 'Yellowjackets' star and the 'Supernatural' alum have been inseparable, so popping the question was inevitable. 'I think it's been a long time coming,' Krueger admitted. 'We've been together for a couple of years now, and it's something I've been thinking about for a while. She has kids, so we wanted to make sure they were ready as well.' 10 Steven Krueger and Candice King attend the 'Yellowjackets' S3 Global Premiere at Chateau Marmont. 'I think she knew at some point,' he continued, 'but it was definitely a surprise on the day when it happened.' Right now, the pair are sinking their teeth into engaged life. 'We are starting to have conversations,' said Krueger about wedding planning. 'I think, for the moment, we are enjoying the engagement; we're not going to rush it. We want to see how work stuff goes over the next year. But we are starting to toss around some ideas about where we want to do it [and] exactly what we want to do. There's a lot of possibilities.' Candice King/Instagram The actor shared that 'right now, we are really debating if we want a big, traditional, fancy wedding or if we do a smaller thing with family and friends somewhere exotic.' 'I think once we settle on one of those, then we'll have some things to bite into.' Candice starred as Caroline Forbes in the CW drama and later the spinoff, while Krueger came into the universe as Josh Rosza. The supernatural world also included Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Zach Roerig, Kat Graham, Michael Trevino, Joseph Morgan and Daniel Gillies. 'We are going to our friend Michael Trevino's wedding, who is also on 'Vampire Diaries,' in a few weeks. So there will be a lot of the cast there, and we'll have most of the people at ours.' Advertisement 'We have a bunch of group chats,' noted Krueger. 'Little ones going and then these fan conventions all the time. It's so fun because a few times a year, we all get together and reminisce about old times and just catch up with each other, and we don't see each other all that much outside of it.' 10 Steven Krueger in 'The Originals.' ©CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection / Everett Collection 10 Candice King and Joseph Morgan on 'The Originals.' ©CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection / Everett Collection While all the players in 'The Vampire Diaries' universe have branched out to separate projects, the actor would love to get back on the screen with his real-life fiancée. Advertisement 'I think that's in the cards,' he teased. 'I think if we could star in some sort of rom-com together, that would be amazing. That's where we're heading.' 'I was this close to being a lawyer and almost went to law school,' he explained, 'and took a sharp left turn and ended up doing this instead. So I've always said at some point, it will come full circle, and I will get to play a lawyer on TV. So I think that's in the future. You can never have too many [legal dramas].' 10 Steven Krueger as Ben Scott in 'Yellowjackets.' '[The showrunners] said, 'Hey, this season is going to be the end for Coach Ben,' which I kind of had an inkling,' he recalled to The Post earlier this month. So truly everything was done in such a kind way, and it allowed me to kind of also prepare for exactly what I needed to do for kind of the overall arc of the season.'

Steven Krueger spills on possible ‘Yellowjackets' Season 4 — and teases Coach Ben's return

Don't be shocked if you catch a glimpse of Coach Ben Scott in the looming 'Yellowjackets' Season 4. While the next season of the beloved thriller has not been announced, Steven Krueger (Coach Ben) exclusively told The Post, 'I know in my heart that it's a thing that's going to happen,' and he'll be ready to return to the franchise in any capacity despite his character being killed off in Season 3. In Episode 6, Coach Ben meets his fate after being tortured by the 'Yellowjackets' soccer team, who hold their previous mentor captive and cut his Achilles tendon before he's shown mercy by teen Natalie (Sophie Thatcher). Advertisement After pleading for her to kill him so he's not executed by the team, Thatcher's character puts Coach Ben out of his misery by murdering him in a poetic death that was hard for the viewers and the 'Yellowjackets' stars to stomach. 10 Steven Krueger as Ben Scott in 'Yellowjackets.' Colin Bentley/Paramount+ with SH While Krueger, 35, told The Post he believed Coach Ben's mercy kill was 'necessary' and a 'chain reaction' of what unfolded between the teens next, he's not counting a possible reappearance out in the future. Advertisement 'If we've seen one thing from the show, we know that just because a character dies [it] is not necessarily the last time you're going to see their face,' he teased. 'So I certainly would not be surprised if if we got some like ghost of Coach Ben stuff, or even a flashback here and there, coming up in the in the future seasons.' 'Yellowjackets' creators, husband and wife duo Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, shared in the past that they pitched a five-season plan for the series. However, there's been no news about a Season 4 — but Krueger, as well as several of his co-stars, are confident that the show will continue. 10 Steven Krueger told The Post he's confident 'Yellowjackets' will return for another season. 10 Kailey Schwerman/SHOWTIME Advertisement 10 He also shared his ideas about how his character Coach Ben Scott could make a comeback. 'I could not imagine them ending the season – or ending the series with Season 3,' Krueger stated. The opportunity to work with the people I've gotten to work with and to play this character, who just has so many different levels and so many different layers. It's been an incredible challenge and so rewarding,' Krueger responded. 'So yeah, of course, I'm game for anything when it comes to showing up in future seasons, and I'm quite sure that there will be future seasons. I don't know when they're going to announce them. But yeah, this is certainly not the way that this story is meant to end.' Coach Ben wasn't the only shocking murder in Season 3. 10 Hilary Swank joined the 'Yellowjackets' cast in Season 3. ‘Yellowjackets' star Steven Krueger on Coach Ben Scott's ‘necessary' mercy killing: ‘The story needs this death to happen'

While 'Yellowjackets' stars and fans alike were sad to see Coach Ben Scott die in Season 3, Steven Krueger said his murder was 'necessary' for the show's future. Krueger, 35, who played the soccer team's self-aware mentor, sat down with The Post to discuss his thoughts on his character's death, revealing he knew Coach Ben's fate long before they started filming the latest season. 'They [the showrunners] said, 'Hey, this season is going to be the end for Coach Ben,' which I kind of had an inkling. We had discussed it kind of informally at the very beginning of the show,' he explained to The Post. 'So, I kind of knew Season 3 was like about the time range.' Kailey Schwerman/Paramount+ with SHOWTIME Advertisement The teens held him hostage and cut his Achilles tendon so he couldn't escape after they found him guilty of burning down the cabin they were staying in following their plane crash. After repeatedly pleading with Natalie to end his life, she did, resulting in her being dethroned as the leader of the group. Coach Ben's corpse was then beheaded, cooked, and eaten by the group — poetic justice for his character, Krueger said. 'This is really poetic. It's like a strong hero's death in a way,' the star told The Post. 'The second thing is, it's really, really necessary because, truthfully, the rest of the story needs this death to happen for, like any of this, to continue.' 14 He played the 'Yellowjackets' soccer team's mentor for three Seasons. Colin Bentley/Paramount+ with SH Krueger shared that Coach Ben's death was a 'chain reaction' that ultimately 'sets off everything else down the road.' He pointed to the frog scientists and their wilderness guide — Hanna (Ashley Sutton), Edwin (Nelson Franklin) and Kody (Joel McHale), respectively — being captured and two-thirds of them being brutally murdered after witnessing Coach Ben's bloody head on a stake. Advertisement 'I don't think that any of that would have taken place if Coach Ben was still alive,' Krueger explained. 'If they knew in the back of their heads that they didn't have to answer for this guy's head being on a stake right here. I think this all would have gone down very, very differently.' 14 Steven Krueger said Coach Ben's death led to a 'chain reaction' that was 'necessary' for the story. While Krueger appreciated his co-stars telling The Post that his death was the hardest for them to come to terms with this season, which saw many main characters meet their demise, the actor appreciated knowing that his time on the show was ending in advance. 'I've never been given like the courtesy of being told well, in advance, you know,' said Krueger, who has also starred on shows like 'Pretty Little Liars,' 'The Originals' and 'Roswell, New Mexico.' 'This was like 4 months before we ever started filming, so truly everything was done in such a kind way, and it allowed me to kind of also prepare for exactly what I needed to do for kind of the overall arc of the season.' 14 Steven Krueger as Ben Scott. Paul Sarkis/SHOWTIME When asked if he would change anything about the way Coach Ben was taken out, Krueger responded, 'Honestly, I think, for the way that the story went, this is exactly what I would have wanted. I love the idea that this death was like a mercy kill. And yet it still was probably not the right thing to do.' He then joked that he would have obviously preferred his character stay alive. 'Let's make Coach Ben alive in the future, and maybe he gets taken out by by Shauna or one of the other ladies in the future,' Krueger teased. 'I think there was like a lot of fun story stuff there, but at the same time it's hard to complain because I really do feel like it was a beautiful story. You know there's not a lot of qualms that I have with the way that the story turned out.' Advertisement 14 Steven Krueger said he remains close with his former castmates.
