Alabama closer named finalist for top college baseball relief pitcher honor
Alabama closer named finalist for top college baseball relief pitcher honor Announced on Wednesday afternoon, Alabama Crimson Tide right-handed pitcher Carson Ozmer has been named one of 13 total finalists for the 2025 Stopper of the Year. An offseason transfer from Pennsylvania, Ozmer enjoyed a phenomenal season for the Crimson Tide as a graduate student where he became one of the top closers in program history. A First Team All-SEC selection, Ozmer ended the 2025 season with a 4-2 record, a 3.29 ERA, and a 48:19 K:BB ratio across 38.1 innings pitched. Amounting to 29 total appearances, Ozmer also limited opponents to a combined .193 AVG against, and led all of college baseball with 17 saves on the season. Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn also recently made the case for Ozmer to win Stopper of the Year, doing so after the Crimson Tide's regional loss at Southern Miss. The winner of the award will be announced June 13 at the College World Series in Omaha. Alabama has never seen a player win Stopper of the Year. Two LSU relief pitchers named to midseason award watch list
Two LSU relief pitchers named to midseason award watch list LSU Baseball relief pitchers Zac Cowan and Casan Evans were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Stopper of the Year midseason watchlist. The pair of right-handers, who are tied for the team lead with six saves apiece, developed into two of the toughest hurlers in late game situations. Evans recently earned a win in his first-career start after strong relief showings while Cowan has the most innings pitched among full time relief hurlers on the team. Evans and Cowan lead the team in ERA among eligible pitchers at 1.09 and 1.13, respectively, as well as WHIP. Cowan, with a 0.82 WHIP, has 49 strikeouts to seven walks through 40 innings. Evans, who has a 1.00 WHIP, hasn't allowed a home run through 118 batters faced and allowed just four earned runs over 33 innings. A true freshman, Evans may be head coach Jay Johnson's answer for the third weekend starter. In Sunday's series finale against Tennessee, he hurled five scoreless frames after allowing two runs in the first inning. Cowan didn't allow a run through 2.2 innings against the Volunteers in relief appearances on Friday and Sunday.
