Two LSU relief pitchers named to midseason award watch list
LSU Baseball relief pitchers Zac Cowan and Casan Evans were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Stopper of the Year midseason watchlist.
The pair of right-handers, who are tied for the team lead with six saves apiece, developed into two of the toughest hurlers in late game situations. Evans recently earned a win in his first-career start after strong relief showings while Cowan has the most innings pitched among full time relief hurlers on the team.
Evans and Cowan lead the team in ERA among eligible pitchers at 1.09 and 1.13, respectively, as well as WHIP. Cowan, with a 0.82 WHIP, has 49 strikeouts to seven walks through 40 innings. Evans, who has a 1.00 WHIP, hasn't allowed a home run through 118 batters faced and allowed just four earned runs over 33 innings.
A true freshman, Evans may be head coach Jay Johnson's answer for the third weekend starter. In Sunday's series finale against Tennessee, he hurled five scoreless frames after allowing two runs in the first inning. Cowan didn't allow a run through 2.2 innings against the Volunteers in relief appearances on Friday and Sunday.

I just, um, as I said earlier in the show, I'm questioning how, how high a level LSU opens at. I got no doubt if they win early games they're gonna be off to the races. They're a prime national championship contender. Can they start fast? Cause that's LSU's schedule on your screen right now, and I just wanna remind you. The classic pre-Halloween. Uh, stat that we keep around here, how many losable games do you play before Halloween? They play one, two, three, four, five, six losable games before Halloween. And they got Bama in Oklahoma after Halloween, so you better have your affairs in order early. Close

Clemson HC Dabo Swinney shares injury update on Adam Randall, multiple Tigers in camp

Clemson football's second scrimmage of fall camp brought encouraging news for one position group, but also highlighted a few lingering injury situations as the countdown to the season opener against No. 9 LSU continues. Senior running back Adam Randall was back in action Thursday after missing some practice time earlier in the week with a minor injury. The former wide receiver, who transitioned to the backfield ahead of last year's College Football Playoff game against Texas, didn't waste time making his presence felt. According to Dabo Swinney, Randall broke free for a 50-plus yard run early in the scrimmage and added several other chunk plays throughout the day. With Jarvis Green already sidelined long term and Jay Haynes still rehabbing from last December's ACL injury, Randall's health will be vital for a position group that can't afford another major setback. While Randall was making plays, the Tigers were without veteran right guard Walker Parks, who suffered an injury during the first scrimmage last weekend. Swinney said the fifth-year senior is expected to be ready for the opener, but the staff has contingency plans in place. Junior Harris Sewell, a former Top 100 prospect with eight career starts, and sophomore Elyjah Thurmon, who has worked at all five spots on the offensive line, have been getting work at right guard. Parks has battled through adversity before, missing most of the 2023 season before returning to start all 14 games last fall and earning third-team All-ACC honors. In the secondary, junior safety Khalil Barnes remains limited by a minor injury that has kept him out for over a week. Barnes participated in situational work Thursday but did not see live snaps. The Georgia native quickly became one of Clemson's most impactful defenders as a freshman in 2023, earning All-American recognition with three interceptions, three forced fumbles and a defensive touchdown. He followed that up last year by leading the team with four picks, becoming the first Tiger to reach that mark since 2019. Clemson now shifts its focus to the final stretch of camp, hoping to have its key contributors healthy and ready when the Tigers take the field against LSU on August 30.
