Editors Guild Protests Against Nonfiction Producer Story Syndicate At Tribeca Premiere Of OceanGate Submersible Documentary ‘Titan'
EXCLUSIVE: The Motion Picture Editors Guild (IATSE Local 700) has staged a protest against nonfiction production company Story Syndicate outside the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of its OceanGate submersible documentary Titan. Audience members were greeted outside the Village East by Angelika theater Friday evening by guild members distributing fliers that call attention to Story Syndicate's 'anti-union conduct' and put pressure on management amid contentious negotiations. More from Deadline Disney Layoffs Hit TV Development & Casting Executive Ranks Crew Strikes Against Terrence Howard Film 'Cipher' After Production Refuses IATSE Contract IBEW Touts "Landmark" New Tentative Agreement With CBS The MPEG brought charges of Unfair Labor Practices against Story Syndicate before the National Labor Relations Board in March, accusing the Harry & Meghan producers of refusal to bargain and bad faith bargaining. 'This company brands itself as a champion of progressive filmmaking,' Alan Heim, ACE, President of Motion Picture Editors Guild, said in a statement to Deadline. 'But when it comes to honoring the rights of the very workers who bring these stories to life, their actions tell a different story. Editors deserve respect, security, and a contract that reflects their value.' He continued: 'We support bold nonfiction storytelling, but the treatment of workers behind the camera should be just as bold, just as fair, and just as progressive.' The MPEG and the Writers Guild of America East won their joint effort to unionize producers and editorial employees at Story Syndicate in 2023. Since then, the MPEG says, management has 'repeatedly delayed negotiations, backtracked on offers it had previously placed on the table, and refused to budge from outrageous positions calculated to kill the prospect of a negotiated agreement.' The union also accuses Story Syndicate of insisting upon retaining the right to cut employees' weekly pay without cause or warning. This union action against the company comes about six months after the Editors Guild and the Writers Guild of America East jointly petitioned Story Syndicate to finalize a fair deal. At the time, more than 250 members of the unions called on the company to 'be the industry leaders they are and set a precedent others can follow to create a truly inclusive and transparent work environment.' 'Long delays, proposals that are out of line with industry standards, and refusals to respond to important proposals would not reflect well on the company's stated principles,' read the petition, which included signatures from Lilly Wachowski, John Walsh, Tom Fontana, and Josh Gondelman. Titan explores the story behind the OceanGate submersible implosion that dominated the news cycle for days in 2023. Directed by Marc Monroe, the film is set to premiere globally on Netflix on June 11. Story Syndicate was co-founded by Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan in 2019. It has become quite known for producing social impact documentaries and nonfiction series, such as Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer and Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna. Other projects from the company include Nuclear Family (HBO), I'll Be Gone In The Dark (HBO), and The Innocence Files (Netflix) as well as documentary features like Fauci (Nat Geo), Becoming Costeau (Nat Geo), Mayor Pete (Amazon), Britney vs. Spears (Netflix), and All In: The Fight For Democracy (Amazon). Fatal Submarine OceanGate Trip Gets Netflix Documentary from ‘Britney v Spears' and ‘Gone Girls' Filmmakers — Watch Trailer
After giving the world two years to breathe following the devastating, fatal OceanGate tragedy, Netflix is releasing a documentary about what went wrong underwater. 'Titan: The OceanGate Disaster' hails from Story Syndicate, the producing team behind 'Gone Girls' and 'Britney v Spears.' Mark Monroe directs the feature which will premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 6 before streaming on Netflix June 11. The Titan submersible was voyaging to the ruins of the Titanic in June 2023. All of the members onboard died. The submersible was operated by American sea tourism and expedition company OceanGate; the Titan went missing for four days while carrying five passengers, including OceanGate CEO Rush. On June 22, debris of the vessel was discovered on the ocean floor. Through exclusive access to whistleblower testimony, pivotal audio recordings, and footage from the company's early days, the film provides an unprecedented look at the technical challenges, moral dilemmas, and shockingly poor decisions that culminated in the catastrophic expedition. Titan examines the doomed underwater endeavor that forced the world to reconsider the price of unchecked ambition in the depths of the ocean.' Lily Garrison, Mark Monroe, and Jon Bardin produce, with Liz Garbus, Dan Cogan, Kate Barry, Mala Chapple, Tommy Coriale, Jude Gerard Prest, Hannah OIson, and Amy Herdy executive producing. 'Titanic' director James Cameron previously criticized OceanGate's handling of the Titan expedition. In July 2023, the filmmaker denied a false report that he was developing a project based on the Titan submersible explosion. He called the rumor 'offensive.' Cameron had previously issued a statement on the tragedy criticizing late CEO Rush and OceanGate for their reckless safety practices. 'I'm struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night. And many people died as a result, and for a very similar tragedy, where warnings went unheeded, to take place at the same exact site, with all the diving that's going on all around the world, I think it's just astonishing,' Cameron said. 'It's really quite surreal, and of course, PH [Paul-Henry Nargeolet], the French legendary submersible dive pilot, is a friend of mine. It's a very small community. I've known PH for 25 years. For him to have died tragically in this way is almost impossible for me to process.' 'Titan: The OceanGate Disaster' premieres on Netflix June 11. Check out the trailer below. Through whistleblower testimony, audio recordings and footage from the company's beginnings, the film offers fresh perspective on the implosion of the Titan submersible that commanded the world's attention in June 2023. Rush was among the five people who died aboard the vessel while it was off the coast of Canada during a voyage to the Titanic wreckage. 'There was no way of knowing when Titan was going to fail,' one individual says in the trailer. 'But it was a mathematical certainty that it would fail.' Another participant in the project says in the footage, 'I thought Stockton was a borderline psychopath. How do you manage a person like that who owns the company?' Producers for Titan: The OceanGate Disaster include Monroe, Lily Garrison and Jon Bardin. Liz Garbus, Dan Cogan, Kate Barry, Mala Chapple, Tommy Coriale, Jude Gerard Prest, Hannah Olson and Amy Herdy serve as executive producers. Liz Garbus Ties ‘Lost Girls' to Arrested Suspect in ‘Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer' Trailer
Lost Girls director Liz Garbus returns to focus on a corrupt criminal system and crime victims and their families seeking justice in the trailer for Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, which bows on Netflix March 31. The 2020 Lost Girls movie for Netflix that starred Amy Ryan centered on a mother searching for her missing daughter in Long Island and who makes a horrifying discovery in the woods where the murdered bodies of four girls had been dumped. More from The Hollywood Reporter Tyler Perry Drama 'Beauty in Black' Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix Remake of Stephen King's 'Cujo' in the Works at Netflix Stephen Graham on One-Shot Netflix Drama Series 'Adolescence' and the U.K. Knife Crime "Epidemic" Gone Girls, also for Netflix and set to bow March 31, is also based on the famously unsolved Long Island serial murders, and Garbus brings her cameras again to a troubled police investigation that left friends and family of disappeared and forgotten women in the sex industry denied justice. 'There were red flags, one after the other, as to what was not looked into by the police,' one commentator says in the trailer for Gone Girls, a three-party documentary series. But that changed in 2023 when, after a 13-year search, the Suffolk County police arrested a Gilgo Beach serial killer suspect, Rex Heuermann. Now Lost Girls, a drama about the hunt for a serial rapist, has been followed up with Gone Girls, a doc series about a botched investigation into a serial killer at long last arrested and facing criminal justice. Emmy-winning director Garbus retraces the twists and turns in a case that is now winding its way through the courts after Heurermann pleaded not guilty to allegedly killing seven women, but has yet to go on trial and may face added charges as more victims are potentially uncovered. Garbus, who directs and executive produces the series, in a Q&A from Netflix explains her journey with the Long Island serial killer case: 'Lost Girls really told that story. We revisit the same case in Gone Girls. Why? Because thanks to a new regime in Suffolk County, we now have the answers the families were looking for over a decade. We got to explore what was going on in the police department and uncover a corruption scandal that made it clear why so little was being done for these women. I think it's a really powerful companion piece to the scripted film.' Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer from Story Syndicate is also executive produced by Dan Cogan, Anne Carey, Jon Bardin, Mala Chapple, Elizabeth Wolfe and Kate Barry.
