Stephen King's "Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" Movie in Works
Yara Sameh Stephen King's novel "The Long Walk" is getting the big screen treatment. Lionsgate has acquired the rights to King's 1999 novel "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon", setting JT Mollner, the filmmaker behind the well-regarded thriller "Strange Darling", to pen and helm the adaptation. The project marks a new collaboration between King and Mollner, who wrote the script for "The Long Walk", which was directed by Francis Lawrence and opens September 12. Roy Lee, the producer of "Long Walk" and "Strange Darling", will reteam with Mollner for "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon". Also producing will be Christine Romero, Ryan Silbert and Andrew Childs. Nathan Kahane, who is transitioning from his post as Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president to independent producer, will also join the project in a producorial capacity. King's psychological horror novel centers on the harrowing survival story of a nine-year-old girl named Trisha as she struggles to stay alive after getting lost in the woods alone. With only her Walkman radio playing baseball games to keep her company, the girl's love of pitcher "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" begins to manifest in hallucinations that may save her life. 'JT is a filmmaker we believe has a bright future,' said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Erin Westerman. 'Throughout his work, he creates characters, and especially young characters, that are so compelling, heartbreaking, and emotional that they pop off the screen. And of course, that's what Stephen King does on the page as well. The story of survival and perseverance in The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is timeless. We've loved this tale for a long time, and JT is the perfect choice to adapt and direct this King fan favorite.' Meredith Wieck will oversee the project for Lionsgate alongside Pavan Kalidindi. Phil Strina negotiated the deal on behalf of the studio. Lee has, over the years, amassed an enviable body of work adapting King's work, including "It" and "It: Chapter Two", as well as "Doctor Sleep", and "Salem's Lot". "Long Walk," which will have a panel in Hall H on Friday at San Diego Comic-Con, adapts King's 1979 horror novel and stars a list of next generation Hollywood talent. Mollner previously wrote and directed the indie psychological thriller "Strange Darling", which was released in 2024 and scored a critically acclaimed 96 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film received the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films' best thriller award in 2025, as well as the STIGES Film Festival Grand People's Choice Award. In addition, Mollner was honored with the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival best director award for the movie. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Brie Larson might be a monstrous mom in the new J.J. Abrams-produced movie
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. While it has not been verified if she will re-enter the atmosphere of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Avengers: Doomsday as Carol Danvers, Deadline has confirmed that Brie Larson might be turning monstrous in a new J.J. Abrams-produced creature feature, Fail-Safe. The new project follows a young boy who slowly starts to unravel family secrets involving his mother and the desperate efforts made to keep her true nature away from the rest of the world. JT Mollner, who made an impressive turn with Strange Darling, will direct the film, while Brian Duffield, who penned Love and Monsters and No One Will Save You, will handle script duties. The tale itself is based on a short story written by Philip Fracassi. Abrams told Deadline, 'With Fail-Safe, Brian Duffield has written an absolute powerhouse of a script. It's a horror film that is as sweet and moving as it is terrifying. To have JT Mollner in the director's chair — his Strange Darling blew me away — is a dream come true." Of course, Larson is no stranger to creature features, having battled an array of aliens in the MCU and getting a close encounter with King Kong in 2017's Kong: Skull Island, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. "Finally, having the limitlessly talented Brie Larson as our star sets up Fail-Safe to be that rare horror film that makes you laugh, feel, and care, before taking you on an absolutely wild ride.' The film is currently doing the rounds at Cannes with no confirmed dates in line for production. For now, Larson's schedule looks pretty clear, and there's no confirmation if she'll be appearing alongside other Avengers: Doomsday, which Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, promises has more cast names yet to be announced. Stephen King's ‘The Long Walk' Comes to Life With Tense Trailer Led by Mark Hamill
Stephen King's 'The Long Walk' Comes to Life With Tense Trailer Led by Mark Hamill Mark Hamill oversees a deadly journey in the trailer for the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Long Walk. Director Francis Lawrence's dystopian thriller movie hits theaters Sept. 12 from Lionsgate. Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis and Judy Greer round out the cast. More from The Hollywood Reporter The Long Walk focuses on an annual contest in which 100 teen boys set out on the titular journey that requires them to maintain a quick pace. The walk ends with just a single survivor. In the trailer, the teens are directed to keep moving along 'until there's only one of you left.' Lawrence helmed the feature from a script by JT Mollner (Strange Darling). The film adapts King's 1979 novel of the same name that was originally published under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman. Serving as producers are Lawrence, Roy Lee, Steven Schneider and Cameron MacConomy. Hamill, Jonsson and Lawrence debuted the movie's first footage during Lionsgate's CinemaCon presentation last month. 'The premise alone is nightmare-inducing, but it's good to get out of your comfort zone,' Hamill told the crowd about working on the project. The actor also reflected on playing the project's villain: 'If you can't be the hero, there's nothing better than being the villain. If you get booed and people hate your guts, then you've done your job.' Additionally, Lawrence explained that he had been a longtime fan of the source material and was drawn to the memorable premise. 'You can imagine yourself in the shoes of one of the boys,' the director noted. Best of The Hollywood Reporter Sign up for THR's Newsletter.
