Police warn woman and dog in matching sweatshirts may be using criminal tactic
Police are warning residents in Sturbridge of a woman in a sweatshirt and her dog, also in a sweatshirt, asking for help. While the woman appeared non-threatening, the Sturbridge Police Department wrote on Facebook, it could be part of a criminal tactic. 'We urge all residents to call the Sturbridge Police if a stranger comes to you in need. Criminals use these tactics to surveil property or if she needed medical services we could have provided her care,' the police department wrote. Around 7 p.m. on Thursday, people who live on Goodrich Road contacted the Sturbridge Police worried about a woman in their driveway. The woman was dressed entirely in black, wearing a hoodie and surgical mask, and had a white dog, who was also wearing a sweatshirt. The woman told the family that she wasn't feeling well. The family gave her water and she left. About two hours before, Sturbridge saw a high of 84 degrees on Thursday. By 7 p.m., it was only slightly lower at 83 degrees. A second family reported that a woman with an identical description asked to use their restroom around the same time. They let her inside, police said. Similar reports were received during the overnight hours of July 14-15. Sturbridge Police, Wales Police, Southbridge Police, and Massachusetts Police Troopers have been going door-to-door and searching wooded areas but have been unable to find the woman. The police department is asking residents call the police department if she is seen again. 'While the individual's behavior raises concerns, no criminal activity has been documented at this time,' police said. Sturbridge Police reopen 2016 case, new search for suspect begins
STURBRIDGE, Mass. (WWLP) – Police in Sturbridge are reopening a case from 2016 and starting a new search for a suspect whose been missing for nearly a decade. Man charged with murder in connection with body found in Holland Back in September of 2016, officers received a domestic dispute report in the area of 35 Vinton Road. Police say Brent Young of Sturbridge went missing after assaulting his girlfriend, stabbing his 16-year-old son, and then hurting himself and running into the woods. State troopers spent three days searching for Young, using all modern technology available at the time, such as Air Wing, Mounted Units, K-9 Units, and Drone Units. However, Young was never found. Now, with new technology at their disposal, Sturbridge and the Massachusetts State Police are starting their search again. The search is focused on locating human remains rather than a live individual, due to the date of the case and the nature of the injuries Young sustained. On Friday, members of Sturbridge Police will be conducting a grid search in the Vinton Road area. The Massachusetts State Police Special Emergency Response Team, Mass. Search and Rescue K-9 Teams, CEMLEC Drone Units, and the Sturbridge Community Emergency Response Team will also be assisting the investigation. STURBRIDGE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts State Police, in collaboration with local police departments, is reopening a cold case from 2016 in a planned investigation beginning Friday. The Sturbridge Police Department said that on September 16, 2016, officers received a domestic dispute report in the area of 35 Vinton Road. Holland officers and state troopers also arrived at the location for assistance. State troopers spent three days searching for Young, using all modern technology available at the time, such as Air Wing, Mounted Units, K-9 Units, and Drone Units. However, Young was never found. Sturbridge Police said that technology advancements in mapping software can now provide a more detailed analysis of the area and determine where Young may have escaped. The department said that the search is focused on locating human remains rather than a live individual, due to the date of the case and the nature of the injuries Young sustained. Last Friday, Sturbridge Police Chief Earl Dessert announced that on March 21, members of Sturbridge Police will be conducting a grid search in the Vinton Road area. The Massachusetts State Police Special Emergency Response Team, Mass. Sturbridge police seek public's help in search for missing, endangered man
STURBRIDGE, Mass. (WWLP) – Authorities in Sturbridge are asking for the public's assistance in locating 29-year-old Austin Schepper, who has been missing since February 11. Arrest made in 2021 homicide of Wilbraham man Law enforcement officials have now classified Schepper as a missing and endangered individual, intensifying their efforts to find him. His vehicle was found on Monday at Big Bunny Market in Southbridge. According to Sturbridge Police, Schepper was last seen on February 11 and has not reported to work since that date. His last known cell phone activity was recorded at 12:30 p.m. in the area of Warren on the same day, but all subsequent calls have gone straight to voicemail. Schepper is described as white, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. He also has a valid License to Carry and has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database as a missing person. The Sturbridge Police Department is working closely with the Massachusetts State Police Worcester County Detective Unit in the ongoing investigation. 'We want to assure the public that numerous investigators are assigned to this case, and we are working diligently with our law enforcement partners to locate Austin,' Sturbridge Police said in a statement. Authorities are urging anyone with information about Schepper's whereabouts to come forward. Tips can be provided anonymously by calling 508-453-7589.
