Unsure how to spend Mother's Day? Check out these ideas

If you've left Mother's Day planning to the last minute and are scrambling for ideas, it's okay. Here is a list of budget-friendly activities to bring the family together. For families looking to jump the gun and celebrate a day early, Perth Makers Market is putting on the perfect Mother's Day Twilight Market on Saturday. Located in the Supreme Court Gardens, the West Australian classic invites friends, families, and singletons down to celebrate the artisans of WA and the incredible mothers in our lives. Open from 4pm until 9pm, people can browse the 100 local stalls, each offering handmade treasures perfect for treating mum. 'With over 80 talented local makers, delicious eats, live music, and family fun under the stars, it's the perfect way to celebrate Mum and enjoy a beautiful evening out,' Perth Makers Market said on Instagram. Special family moments can be captured at the market's photo booth, and kids can write their mum a heartfelt message at the Mother's Day card station. If handmade WA delicacies aren't your jam and your family would prefer a celebration surrounded by animals, head to the Perth Zoo. Located in the heart of the city, mums have free entry to see the animals that call WA home. Perth Zoo is home to more than 1300 animals, many of whom have families of their own. Specifically, in the Amazonia habitat, zoo visitors can see Miski, a baby Bolivian squirrel monkey who keeps their mum Renia busy with cheeky antics. Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn said he was pleased to continue the Perth Zoo tradition of celebrating mums with free entry to Perth Zoo on Mother's Day. 'This free entry offer for Mother's Day is also a chance to highlight the important conservation work of the zoo, including the great success of its breeding programs.' Another budget-friendly idea is taking mum to see the beautiful blooms in Subiaco. The vibrant flower festival Subi Blooms is open until May 11, featuring 15 large-scale floral installations. City of Subiaco Mayor David McMullen said this year's theme perfectly encapsulates Subiaco, combining its rich heritage and vibrant growth. 'We are set to attract people from all corners of the metropolitan area, and will show people what Subi has on offer year-round. I encourage you to come along and make a day of it,' he said.

Nonna's table recreated in magical Subi flower festival

The popular flower festival in Subiaco is returning for the Mother's Day weekend with a special Italian twist to pay homage to its sister city. Kicking off on Friday, Subi Blooms will run all weekend and transform the streets into a canvas of colour with 15 large-scale floral installations. This year, the city will be paying special tribute to its heritage, named after the Italian town of Subiaco when a group of Benedictine monks were the first European settlers in the area. Your local paper, whenever you want it. Tying into the Italian theme is Lauren Barbas' installation Nonna's Table, inspired by the country's food and cooking culture. 'Tapping into my Italian heritage, with roots from Calabria, this installation will celebrate everything that being Italian encapsulates: food, family and homegrown traditions,' the Cotton and Sage florist said. 'As a new mum myself, I cherish my Sundays with my daughter and husband and can't wait to create traditions of our own as she grows older. 'A central female statue will honour the matriarchs in our family, while an intimate tablescape will feature some of my favourite Sunday staples: figs, fresh bread and olives.' Florist Eden Ranelli, from Freakhaus, has also created a special piece titled Bizilla & Barilla, using flowers to create an abstract installation of the country's famous dish: pasta. 'The structure I've created is an abstract interpretation of pasta – a little playful, a little unexpected – and I'll be weaving red and white flowers through it to mimic delicate lacework,' she said. 'The red and white also tie back to the colours of both the Italian and Maltese flags.' Marking Subi Blooms seventh year, mayor David McMullen said the weekend festival will be a feast for the senses. 'These two Italian-inspired installations reflect our city's Italian heritage and will complement this year's line-up of fantastic floral artistry,' he said. 'This is a heritage which dates back to the earliest European settlement in the district, and it has grown and evolved in the many years since, both through a sister city relationship (with Subiaco in Italy) and, basically, whenever there is an opportunity for us to celebrate the Subiaco story.' 'This year's theme, 'Roots to Bloom,' perfectly encapsulates Subiaco—where rich heritage meets vibrant growth,' City of Subiaco Mayor David McMullen said. 'We are set to attract people from all corners of the metropolitan area, and will show people what Subi has on offer year-round.' Perth-born artist Claire Mueller is one of the 30 florists involved in the event, and for her 'Roots to Bloom' is all about personal reflection, connection, and wonder. Ms Mueller — known for her work as — created an installation for the festival designed to connect generations. 'I wanted to do something that had a lot of discovery moments and moments for connection and reflection on the self,' she said. 'For me, it's an opportunity for people to take a moment to reflect on their own journeys and the multiple influences that have come together to make each of us unique flowers,' she said. Ms Mueller's instillation is made up of three parts — XOX, The Arch, and Kalidescope — that each embody her distinct visual language, and bright marbled patterns. The acclaimed artist's instillation represents her personal reflections on life but also allows the public to join in on the creativity through the interactive experience. People can step inside the interactive installation ahead of the festival, and it will be on display from April 25 until May 25. The 2025 Subi blooms festival will feature exciting new attractions such as a fresh flower vending machine and curated program events. Festival goers will be able to enjoy delicious food and drinks in the Gather Village. Subi Blooms joined with Gather: A Floral Community to bring WA this years spectacular showcase of floral artistry. No flower will go to waste and when the weekend comes to an end leftover blooms will be repurposed into bouquets for expecting mothers at King Edward Memorial Hospital and St John of God Subiaco. People can attend the free event from 12pm on Friday May 9 until Sunday May 11.
