The Substance was like entering the eye of the storm: Margaret Qualley

Agency: Last Updated: Los Angeles, Aug 5 (PTI) 'The Substance" actor Margaret Qualley says her role in the body horror drama film made her confront 'generations of trauma". Qualley, who is the daughter of actor Andie MacDowell and former model Paul Qualley, starred alongside Demi Moore in the film. Directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, the 2024 film revolves around Elisabeth Sparkle (Moore), a fitness icon who is laid off from her TV show when she turns 50. A desperate Sparkle turns to the Substance, a black market product that helps her spawn a younger version, called Sue, portrayed by Qualley. But they must alternate their existence in the world. Qualley said boarding the film was like 'entering the eye of the storm" for her. 'It was like entering the eye of the storm. It was like dealing with all of my s**t, my mom's s**t, generations of trauma. It was a nightmare, being this idyllic, youthful fembot. No one thinks of themselves like that. The movie is not a good touchstone for what femininity is — it is quite masculine in a lot of ways," she told Cosmopolitan in an interview. The actor praised her co-star, Moore, and called her a special person. 'The thing I'll take home with me, for sure, is Demi Moore. She's such a special person. She's strong and she's wise, but she's also incredibly soft and porous. I learned so much from her. She's become one of my dearest friends," Qualley said. 'The Substance" had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, where it won the award for the best screenplay and received an 11-minute standing ovation. Qualley is currently gearing up for the release of her upcoming film 'Honey Don't!". The comedy film is directed by Ethan Coen and is slated to hit the big screen on August 22. Margaret Qualley bares all in NYC as she reveals why she ‘felt really lonely' before Jack Antonoff

Margaret Qualley is shedding more than just her clothes. In a new cover story for Cosmopolitan's Fall 2025 issue, published Monday, the 'Poor Things' starlet opened up about her husband, Jack Antonoff, and how she felt before they met. 'In every other relationship I've ever been in, I still felt really lonely because I wasn't with my person, and it's like I was seeking something,' Qualley, 30, began. 'I don't feel like that anymore. Jack makes me feel safe and comfortable.' Advertisement 9 Margaret Qualley on the cover of Cosmopolitan's new Fall 2025 issue. I can't be that for him – he'd see through it. So I just have to be myself. He's been the person I've pictured my whole life. And I'm not even saying that metaphorically.' Advertisement The 'Substance' actress also revealed how she and the Bleachers frontman, who married in 2023, first connected. 'Falling in love with Jack was the biggest feeling I've ever felt. We met right as COVID was ending, at the first party I'd been to,' Qualley shared. 9 Margaret Qualley posing for pictures around NYC for Cosmopolitan's new Fall 2025 issue. Although the 'Honey Don't!' actress admitted that she 'fell in love' with Antonoff, 41, shortly after they first met, she claimed that he was the one to say 'I love you' first. 'He did, obviously,' Qualley began. 'I'm very old-school about stuff like this. I would never put myself out there first.' 'I never text twice. I mean, now we're married and I can text him anything at any time. We're always having a conversation; he's like my human diary,' she added. 'But before we were together, at the beginning, I would always follow Southern girl etiquette.' 'My first crush was Adam Sandler in 'Happy Gilmore' and 'Big Daddy,' and I've been looking for that essence my whole life,' she said. 'I'm like, 'That's Jack.'' As for her idea of 'healthy love,' Qualley said that it is 'like there's always a ground below you' and that she makes a point to perform in projects that feature her concept of 'healthy love.' 'You can't fall very far because you're going to be caught,' the 'Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood' actress said. 9 Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley attend the 64th Annual Grammy Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 3, 2022, in Las Vegas, Nevada. 'The kind of thing I would be proud to show my kids one day.' Elsewhere during her interview with Cosmopolitan, Qualley opened up about her former model-turned-actress mother, Andie MacDowell. Advertisement More than 40 years before Qualley posed for photos around New York for the magazine's latest issue, MacDowell, 67, did the same for the outlet's September 1982 cover. Qualley, 67, was also a model, Qualley started her career all on her own when she left home for the big city while still just a teenager. Advertisement 'I moved to New York City at 16, when I got into a summer program at the American Ballet Theatre,' the 'My Salinger Year' star recalled. 'Although I didn't watch Dance Moms, that was very much the world I grew up in.' 'But I realized I was just not good enough to be a dancer, and I'll never be perfect at it,' she admitted. 'And if I'm not going to be the best, I don't think it's worth pursuing.' 9 Andie MacDowell, Rainey Qualley, Paul Qualley and Margaret Qualley at the NYC premiere of 'Just the Ticket' in 1998. I sent my mom a long email: 'Found a school. Got a job. What do you think?'' However, it wasn't always easy for Qualley, who didn't make her acting debut until the 2013 film 'Palo Alto' or gain real recognition until the HBO drama series 'The Leftovers' one year later. 9 Margaret Qualley attends the 30th annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar on February 7, 2025, in Santa Monica, California. Getty Images for Critics Choice Association 'I was 16 years old, alone in the city. It felt terrifying,' she shared. 'Other kids were going home to their parents and their tutors, and I was at Paris Fashion Week with a chemistry or algebra textbook for a class that I was failing.' Advertisement 'I didn't have any friends. I didn't know anyone in the city,' Qualley continued. 'If a guy got on the elevator, I would get off.' 'I lived all of my 20s out of a suitcase, without any furniture. I had a mattress on the floor,' she concluded. 'And I became financially independent by the time I was 18, so I was super frugal, too.'

Demi Lovato releases first single in three years

Demi Lovato has released her first new single in three years. The singer dropped electro-pop track Fast on Friday (01.08.25) after she previously declared she was ready to return to her pop roots after dabbling with a rock sound on her last album Holy Fvck. As she teased the new single in posts on social media, Demi told fans: "My pop music coming back to life after we had a funeral for it." The singer previously held a "funeral" for her pop sound by sharing a picture of herself and her team dressed in black with Demi holding up her middle finger to the camera. She captioned the snap: "A funeral for my pop music". Fast is Demi's first release since she launched Holy Fvck in 2002 which was led by the singles Skin of My Teeth, Substance and 29. Rolling Stone magazine recently reported Demi would be embracing pop again on her next project, with the publication suggesting the album - which will be her ninth studio record - is expected to be released later in the year. She has been working on her new music with songwriter/producer Zhone, who told Rolling Stone they had a lot of fun in the studio together while making the new record. He said: "It's been so inspiring working with Demi and experiencing her journey of continued leveling up. "She is such a master in the studio. This album is about letting inhibitions go, and we had so much fun making this music! It really comes across throughout." A source added to the publication: "Over the past few years, Demi has found love, joy, and newfound confidence, making the choice to approach life with much more lightness and fun. "She took this sentiment into the studio, which can be felt in every track." Demi - who married her fiance Jordan 'Jutes' Lutes in May - previously admitted she was still "figuring out" her sound for the new album but was working on a number of love songs. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last year, Demi explained: "It's true. I'm working on new music. I'm kind of figuring out my sound right now. "I don't know when it'll come out but it'll come out when I'm ready." The host then asked his guest if it would be a max of "happy songs and sad songs" and she replied: "I tend to write from the place that I am in in the moment. Because it's actually been like... it's been amazing. "I've been writing nothing but love songs and sexy songs because I'm in this really good place. It feels good to be able to write coming from that place."

Dennis Quaid says marriage with 39-years-younger wife is ‘closest relationship' he's ever had

Dennis Quaid is happiest when he's with his wife, Laura Savoie. The 71-year-old actor shared what he loves most about his 32-year-old spouse during an interview Monday with Fox News Digital. 'My life is paradise,' he said. 'Every day is paradise with her. It really is.' 'It's the closest relationship I've ever had with anybody,' the Far from Heaven star added. 'What can I tell you? I don't know why God had waited so long to bring her, for her to come along, but [I'm] really glad he brought her into my life, or I walked into hers.' Quaid acknowledged that even though his wife is 39 years his junior, he doesn't really pay attention to the age gap. 'I haven't spoken out about the age difference of my wife. Other people have. But…I really don't think about it," he confessed. "She's got so much going on that, you know, I just don't notice it. She's just, she's the light of my life." 'I wasn't looking for it,' Quaid added. 'And she came along, and it's God put us together.' Quad shared similar sentiments about the age gap in the past. 'There's 30-something years between us, and we just don't even notice it,' he said during an appearance on the Today show in 2020. 'I've never related to someone in my life better than we do.' He continued: 'We have such a great relationship and you know, love finds a way, wherever it is. You never know when love is coming, who it's gonna be, and you have no control over it. We just couldn't be happier.' Quaid and Savoie tied the knot in a secret ceremony in June 2020 after a year of dating. The couple was initially meant to get married in a lavish Hawaiian wedding, but due to Covid-19 restrictions at the time, they chose to elope in California. Speaking to People after the wedding, The Parent Trap star revealed that the ceremony took place on a beach in Santa Barbara with just their pastor as a witness. 'It was beautiful,' Quaid said. 'Just looking into her eyes, she was the most stunning bride.' Savoie is Quaid's fourth wife. The Substance star was previously married to P.J. Soles from 1978 to 1983 and Meg Ryan from 1991 to 2001. Ryan and Quaid welcomed their only child, Jack, together in 1992. From 2004 to 2018, Quaid was married to Kimberly Buffington, and they now share 17-year-old twins, Thomas and Zoe. Last month, the actor gave an update about Zoe, who was working as a camp counselor in Texas during the devastating flash floods. He told Fox News Digital at the time that Zoe's camp is many miles north of Kerrville, Texas, which was hit by the catastrophic overflooding of the Guadalupe River. 'The Hill County of Texas is a magical place, especially for children going to camp there,' the Texas native said. 'It's a cherished memory you carry with you all your life. My daughter was actually a few miles away from [Camp] Mystic, further north. Thankfully, their camp was OK.'
