Despite spending, flood-prone areas growing in state: RJD MP
Buxar: RJD MP, Sudhakar Singh, on Tuesday criticised state's water resources department, alleging that despite spending over Rs 80,000 crore on flood control and irrigation in the past two decades, the drainage capacity has declined by 25% and flood-prone areas have increased. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the MP claimed that during Rabri Devi govt in 2005, 12.5 lakh hectares of land had irrigation facilities, but this has now decreased to 9.5 lakh hectares. Despite an annual expenditure of over Rs 4,000 crore on flood control, the area affected by floods has increased, he said. He alleged that change in the tradition of releasing water in canals before May 15 during the 'Rohini Nakshatra' by the govt would delay sowing of paddy. "The new schedule, extending canal operations until June 15, is expected to delay sowing, reduce crop yields and threaten food security," he said. He said the Sone canal system, which is crucial for several districts, is not performing well. While Indrapuri Barrage used to release 9,000 cusecs of water, it now releases only 3,000 cusecs. Additionally, 1,158 million cubic meters of water in the Van Sagar agreement with Uttar Pradesh remain untapped. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The MP demanded an independent high-level inquiry into the Rs 80,000 crore expenditure, restoration of the previous canal water release schedule, prioritisation of farmers' challenges, and accountability for officials and leaders involved in 'mismanagement'.

NEP anti-poor, says Buxar MP
Buxar: Buxar RJD MP Sudhakar Singh on Sunday said the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 was "anti-poor" and "anti-Constitution", warning that it promotes a commercialised model of education that risks excluding vulnerable communities in states like Bihar. "The NEP pushes a commercialised model of education. In a state like Bihar, where over a third of households earn less than Rs 6,000 per month, it risks excluding the most vulnerable," said Singh, who chaired the 'Bihar Niti Vimarsh Samvaad' at the AN Sinha Institute. Singh said despite Bihar allocating over Rs 60,000 crore – 21.7% of its total budget – to education, learning outcomes remain poor. He criticised central funding mechanisms such as the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) and PM-USHA, which require institutions to repay loans from their own internal revenue. "Such models will force fee hikes and deepen inequality," Singh said. Karnataka's higher education minister, M C Sudhakar, shared how his state has adapted elements of the NEP to suit local needs and encouraged Bihar to take a similar approach. Political leaders including CPI-ML's Dipankar Bhattacharya, Congress MLA Shakeel Ahmad Khan and RJD's Subodh Mehta called for broad-based consultation before implementing the NEP in Bihar. The conference resolved to hold further deliberations on key issues such as vocational education, the digital divide and institutional autonomy in higher education.

MP urges PM to allocate textile park to state
Buxar: RJD MP from Buxar, Sudhakar Singh , on Sunday wrote to PM Narendra Modi, demanding allocation of Prime Minister Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM-MITRA) park to Bihar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The MP said under the PM-MITRA scheme , recently announced by the central govt, establishment of parks has been announced in seven states, barring Bihar. He added that Bihar was an industrially backward state with ample potential for the textile industry and it had selected 1,719 acres of land for this scheme, and the preliminary project report was submitted to the ministry of textiles before the last date of March 15, 2022. While states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka already have developed textile industries, Bihar does not have any such modern textile cluster. He said due to lack of opportunities, workers migrate from Bihar. If such a project was set up in Bihar, it would not only generate local employment, but large-scale migration could also be prevented, he added.
