One-month-old girl stolen at UP's Shahganj station, dumped in pond, dies
Representative Image VARANASI: A one-month-old girl died after being abducted by a man near Shahganj railway station in Jaunpur district on Wednesday, while two newborn girls found abandoned in Azamgarh succumbed during treatment a day earlier. In the Jaunpur case, Government Railway Police (GRP) inspector Virendra Kumar Sonkar said the infant was stolen while her parents, Kariya and Lalmani of Ambedkarnagar, were asleep on platform no. 4/5 in the early hours of Tuesday. The accused, 25-year-old Sugriv Kumar , a resident of Deoria, allegedly lifted the child and tried to flee. When the baby cried, the couple woke up and raised an alarm, prompting a chase by passengers. To evade the crowd, Sugriv jumped into a pond covered with water hyacinth ( Jalkumbhi ). GRP and RPF teams soon arrived, pulled him out, and rushed the baby to a hospital, where she died during treatment. Sugriv was arrested, and the infant's body was sent for post-mortem. Police said investigations are underway to determine the motive behind the theft. Meanwhile, in Azamgarh's Kotwali area, two newborn girls were found abandoned in a bag in bushes along the Tamsa riverbank near DAV College late Monday night. Locals alerted police after hearing the babies cry. Inspector Shashimauli Pandey said both infants were taken to the district women's hospital, but they died during treatment early Tuesday. Doctors informed police the babies appeared to be just a few hours old and had likely suffered due to exposure to extreme heat. Their bodies were also sent for post-mortem. Police are investigating both incidents.
