Chandigarh: The Haryana govt on Friday reviewed the preparedness for the common eligibility test (CET) to be conducted by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) across 20 districts of the state and UT Chandigarh on Saturday and Sunday. While additional chief secretary, home department, Sumita Misra on Friday reviewed the preparations of the district administration for the CET in Panchkula, other senior officials, including those from civil and police administration, reviewed arrangements in their respective districts. Around 13.70 lakh applicants are expected to take the examination. The HSSC has also made an arrangement of around 1,000 Haryana Roadways buses for those taking exams – for shuttle service to examination centres. The HSSC teams also made arrangements for the conduct of examination, even as the officials of district administration reviewed security arrangements in and around the exam centres. The preparations were being made in addition to invoking the prohibitory orders within the 500-metre radius of the examination centres and setting up special police check posts at strategic locations. Any candidate facing difficulties en route can approach the nearest police personnel for assistance, she said. Police have been instructed to escort stranded candidates to their exam centres without delay, Sumita added. She also directed for the setting up of helpdesks at bus stands and other prominent locations for the convenience of candidates. Sumita further urged students and parents not to fall for fake messages, letters, or rumours circulating on social media. "Follow only official instructions issued by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission, the police, or the district administration," she said, adding that any attempt to spread misinformation or share forged documents would result in immediate police action. Transport arrangements for Teej (BOX) Haryana transport minister Anil Vij on Friday announced that on Saturday and Sunday, general passengers would also be allowed to travel in the buses operating in various cities of Haryana for the common entrance test candidates. He said his suggestion was accepted by CM Nayab Singh Saini, as July 27 coincides with Teej celebrations, a widely observed cultural and religious festival in Haryana, and a large number of citizens, particularly women, travel to visit their families and temples. He further said it was equally important to ensure smooth, uninterrupted, and safe public transportation for the general public.

Surat: A middle-aged woman was kidnapped and beaten unconscious in the Pal area of the city by seven men and four women — relatives of the woman her son married and eloped with. The victim's younger sister, Asha Makwana (44), filed an FIR at Pal police station against the eleven accused persons for kidnapping, assault and criminal intimidation. Makwana said her elder sister, Sumita, lives with her two sons and daughter. Sumita's son, Aniket (23), married Naina Od in court on June 1, 2024. After staying at their own houses for a few months, the two eloped and began living together. They presented themselves at Rander police station on May 28, declaring that they were married and would live together. After that, Naina began staying at Aniket's house. On June 10, Sumita's son Vansh called Makwana saying his mother had been kidnapped in a car from near Care and Cure Hospital on Gaurav Path. Another relative, who lives in Ambikanagar Society, called to say that Sumita was being assaulted by members of Naina's family. Makwana rushed to the spot with some relatives and found the accused assaulting Sumita. They included Naina's relatives Rajesh, Jagdish, Dipak, Jatin, Nikhil, Sahil, Shubham, Urmila, Usha, Rekha and Vasanti. Makwana said Jatin and Nikhil were hitting Sumita with sticks while Rajesh was using a plastic pipe. She added that the women were hitting Sumita in her private parts. Vasanti was screaming that Sumita would be burned with kerosene. After Makwana called 181 and 108, paramedics arrived and took an unconscious Sumita to hospital. Pal police inspector K L Gaadhe told TOI: "We have arrested the seven men; they are between 18 and 48 years old. We have booked them for kidnapping, criminal intimidation and other offences under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 140 (4), 189 (2), 190, 351 (3) and 54 and Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act. We are investigating what prompted them to kidnap the victim. We will also call Aniket and Naina for their statements. "
