United Airlines passenger tried to stab flight attendant and open emergency doors

When Francisco Severo Torres, from Leominster, Massachusetts, went on a mid-air rant on the United Airlines flight, he attempted to stab a crew member with a broken spoon A United Airlines passenger tore into mid-air rant - insisting his father was Dracula - and tried to stab a flight attendant in the neck with a broken metal spoon. ‌ Francisco Severo Torres also tried to open an emergency door on the plane as it travelled from Los Angeles to Boston, Massachusetts. The 34-year-old man rambled at other passengers during the journey, stating he wanted to be shot so he could be reincarnated and that he would kill everyone on board. ‌ When the male flight attendant tried to calm Torres, the tourist punched him and tried to stab him with the modified metal spoon. The steward felt the implement in Torres' hand hit him on his shirt collar and tie three times, according to court documents. ‌ Torres was eventually subdued and arrested when the flight landed at Boston Logan International Airport. He was today jailed for 26 months at a court in Boston after admitting one count of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants in relation to the incident on the United Airlines Flight 2609. ‌ US District Court Judge Patti Saris heard how the defendant loudly rambled at other guests with around 45 minutes left of the journey. A side door on the aircraft became disarmed, according to court documents, and one flight attendant noticed the door's locking handle had been moved. Another saw Torres near the door and believed he had moved the handle. Cabin pressure during flight prevents airplane doors from opening. The judge sentenced Torres to time served, which was around two years since the March 2023 episode. He also will be on supervised release for five years, during which he is prohibited from flying on a commercial aircraft. Torres has spent time in mental health facilities, according to court records. The police chief in his hometown of Leominster, Massachusetts said officers have dealt with him several times since 2014, mostly over family issues and mental health episodes. But magistrate judge Judith Dein had previously declared the man fit for trial based on a mental health evaluation. It had been argued by Torres' lawyers he was not competent for proceedings. The case comes after shocking video captured the moment an unruly passenger was detained after police stormed a plane in Turkey recently. The SunExpress flight, which had been heading for Dalaman, was forced to make an unplanned diversion after a passenger became disruptive mid-flight. The flight took off from Manchester Airport but had to stop almost 700 miles short of its destination at Belgrade in Serbia, at around 10.30pm so cops could deal with the rowdy flyer.

Airline offers package holidays including hair transplants and nose jobs

A Turkish airline is targeting Britons with package holidays that include hair transplants, facelifts and discount dental work. SunExpress, a fast-growing low-cost airline, is offering flights from 12 British cities next summer to places like Antalya, a centre for dental treatment, and Izmir, where clinics specialise in six-pack and buttock implants. Max Kownatzki, the company's chief executive, said that while traditional beach holidays remained the primary draw, Britons were keener than most nationalities on packages that included medical procedures. 'Medical tours are popular year-round. Everything you can imagine, it's there. There are clusters. Istanbul is big in hair, Antalya is big in teeth, Izmir has implants of all kinds,' he said. 'A seat-only passenger will look for a hair transplant and how to get there, and we can take them. But the tour operators have the same aim as us of diversifying their product portfolio and that is what they are doing.' According to SunExpress, its summer bookings from the UK are up 22pc this year following the addition of flights from Liverpool and Glasgow, partly driven by people combining nose jobs and other cosmetic surgery with a week on the beach, according to the airline. Medical tourism is a booming sector, with around 2m foreign patients visiting Turkey's 4,000 clinics last year for procedures including IVF and cosmetic work such as lip flips, nose jobs and breast surgery. The number of British people receiving medical treatment overseas reached 431,000 in 2023, spurred by long NHS waiting lists and the high cost of private procedures at home. Almost one in five of those unable to get a dental appointment have also decided to go abroad, according to Ipsos poll results published in March. A joint venture between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, SunExpress has increased UK capacity five-fold to 2m seats since 2022, adding flights from two airports a year on average. The airline is targeting the UK after securing 38pc of German travel to Turkish cities other than Istanbul, with tourist traffic boosted by visits home by the nation's 3.8m ethnic Turks. 'It can't get hot enough' Mr Kownatzki said leading discount carriers Ryanair and EasyJet were under-exposed in the UK-Turkey leisure market, with Leeds-based Jet2 providing the most competition. Golfing breaks are in 'huge demand' from Britons, he said, with Turkey the third-most-popular destination for winter golf after Spain and the Algarve. It is also promoting 'conference tourism' to resorts such as Dalaman as an alternative to London venues where prices soar in autumn and winter. The chief executive said holiday bookings are extending further into so-called shoulder periods outside the summer peak, though there is no sign of demand easing off in the hottest summer months. He said: 'I'm asked that question: what do you think about climate change? But I almost think it can't get hot enough. Antalya was 40-something degrees this week, hot and humid, and demand is going up.'

Turkey wildfires: Izmir airport forced to close with flights cancelled and diverted

A Turkish airport has been forced to temporarily close with flights cancelled and diverted as wildfires continue to rage. Flights were grounded to and from Adnan Menderes Airport, which serves the coastal city of İzmir, a popular tourist destination, on Sunday (29 June). The airport departure board shows a number of flights due to leave on Sunday evening have been suspended or cancelled, including several from Sun Express Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Aerlingus. Flights appear to be slowly resuming late into the evening. An airport spokesperson said: 'Due to the forest fire in İzmir's Gaziemir district and adverse weather conditions, including strong winds, İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport was temporarily closed to air traffic as of 16:00 local time. 'Some incoming flights were diverted to alternate airports during the closure. Following the NOTAM [meaning notice to airmen], the runway has reopened and the first flight, PC 1864 to Ercan, has successfully departed at 21:50 local time. Flight operations are gradually returning to normal.' Flights on the board still show severe delays, with one Sun Express Airlines flight to London Stansted delayed by 21 hours, now set to take off at 7.30pm on Monday. An AerLingus flight to Dublin, originally due to take off at 10.20pm, has been cancelled. Photos on social media showed clouds of smoke over İzmir as the sky turned orange with flames. The Mayor of İzmir, Dr. Cemil Tugay, said: 'Today is a very tough day for us; we are simultaneously battling numerous fires breaking out all across our beautiful İzmir. In collaboration with relevant institutions, our Fire Department, along with heavy machinery, tankers, and all field personnel, is on high alert. 'Our teams are working with all their strength to combat the fires, which have grown due to the effect of the storm, particularly in Menderes, Seferihisar, and Gaziemir. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the fires that reduce our forests to ashes are caused by human hands. 'A small act of negligence is enough to burn down an entire forest, thousands of creatures living within it, and our homes. Please, let us be extremely careful from now on. Especially in hot weather, let us steer clear of any activities that could cause a fire.' The flames in Turkey come almost a year after the country battled wildfires in August, after the country recorded its hottest July for 53 years, with temperatures reaching 45.9C in Şırnak in the country's southeast, according to the Turkish State Meteorological Service. As Turkey battles its own tinder dry conditions, Europe remains on high alert as the continent faces its first major heatwave of the summer. Temperatures are expected to climb as high as 42C. Greece has already experienced blazes on the Island of Chios, while France has issued severe fire risk warnings.

The resort city and ancient port offers culture, history, food and endless opportunities for leisure and relaxation. There's lots to do from venturing to The Land of Legends Theme Park, sunbathing on the beach, to exploring the blue waters on the famous Turquoise Coast. The airline is also launching two weekly flights from Cork to Antalya next year. Other routes with SunExpress are from London Gatwick and Manchester airports to Bodrum which will operate twice a week. When one Sun Writer ventured to Bodrum and after spending time in the Turkish town, she dubbed it the "St Tropez of Turkey". She noted that it was much more affordable than other spots in the Mediterranean like Ibiza, Mykonos and Marbella - Bodrum had a similar feel, all the while being much more affordable. Tobias Bracht, Head of Sales for SunExpress, said: 'We are delighted to be expanding our UK and Ireland network with the launching of services from East Midlands Airport. "With direct flights to Türkiye from 14 airports next summer, we will be offering more choice, convenience and value than ever before, reinforcing our commitment to being the leading leisure carrier from the UK and Ireland to Türkiye.'
