More from Variety About a group of soldiers fighting their way through two kilometers of war-torn terrain to liberate a devastated Ukrainian village, Chernov's '2000 Meters To Andriivka' debuted at Sundance 2025. It is one of several feature films about Ukraine heading to the 32nd Sheffield Doc/Fest, which announced its full lineup Wednesday. In 'Cuba & Alaska,' phone and body-cam footage tell the story of two female medics in Ukraine's army as they navigate the chaos of war with bravery, humor, and friendship. The four other films in the category are: Nayibe Tavares-Abel's 'Colossal,' about a filmmaker who investigates her grandfather's work on the 1990 Dominican elections; Hosam Abu Dan's 'Gaza Sound Man,' about the realities of life on the ground in Palestine before and after October 7, 2023; Bao Nguyen's 'The Stringer,' a Sundance 2025 film about a whistleblower who prompts an investigation into the true history behind one of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century; and Hind Meddeb's 'Sudan, Remember Us,' a chronicle of Sudan's youth revolution that depicts how hope was ignited though through music, murals and the unyielding power of words. 'At Sheffield DocFest, we believe in the power of storytelling to inspire change and create an alternate future,' said Mimi Poskitt, Sheffield DocFest Managing Director. 'And this is what DocFest 2025's program is all about: coming together to learn and be inspired to take action. In planning this year's edition, we reflected deeply on where we can make a real difference — how, in an environment where filmmakers are facing ever greater challenges, our festival can be a place where documentaries thrive.' In addition to '2000 Meters To Andriivka' and 'The Stringer,' several Sundance 2025 docs have been invited to screen at the fest including: Violet Du Feng's 'The Dating Game,' Tony Benna's 'André is an Idiot,' and Kim A. Snyder's 'The Librarians.' As previously announced, the world premiere of Kim Hopkins' 'Still Pushing Pineapples' will open Sheffield DocFest 2025. About Dene Michael, the former singer of Black Lace and pop band behind the novelty Brit party favourite 'Agadoo,' the film follows the lead singer's journey on the road with his aging mother and a partner, as he aims for a comeback. Sheffield titles screen in three competition sections: International Competition, International First Feature Competition, and International Short Film Competition. In addition to the previously announced guests of honor program featuring Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the co-founders of the media company World of Wonder, the festival will present its Podcast Stories strand and previews of television series episodes in its First Impressions strand. Out of competition films screen in six strand sections: Rhythms, Debates, People & Community, Memories, Rebellions, and Journeys. 'Sheffield DocFest is one of Sheffield's flagship events and a key date in our cultural calendar,' said Shefflield Councillor Martin Smith. 'The event proudly puts the city on the world stage.' It's Boulder! Sundance Exits Utah For 2027 Move To Blue State Colorado

After over 40 years, the Sundance Film Festival is leaving Park City for a new and lucrative home in Boulder, Colorado. As Deadline has been telling you for months, the Rocky Mountain metropolis has been in pole position over the United Utah bid and the efforts of Cincinnati, Ohio since the Robert Redford founded cinema celebration revealed the trio of finalists last September. More from Deadline Final Word On Sundance 2025: Fest Director Eugene Hernandez Dispels Naysayer But Addresses Challenges In Park City Postmortem Sundance Film Festival 2025: All Of Deadline's Movie Reviews Sundance's Future In Utah Looks Bleak As Park City Mayor Laments Anti-LGBTQ+ Flag Bill Coming out of two consecutive years of Sundance being canceled for in-person screenings due to the pandemic, an overwhelmed Park City, seismic shifts in the industry, and Sundance Institute executive musical chairs, the festival was looking for dramatic reset with a new location, as Deadline exclusively reported in July 2023. To that, the official unveiling in April last year that Sundance was taking bids from contenders across the nation was an inevitability — as, in many ways, was the selection of Boulder for a 10-year long contract. 'Part of the decision-making process was around opportunity for growth,' bluntly said Acting Sundance Institute CEO Amanda Kelso to Deadline today. 'That is also an important factor for us. Knowing that we can be in a town that has 100,000 people means that it has more venues, more spaces, and more opportunities in how we can be expansive of the festival moving forward.' Thursday's announcement is in accordance with the final decision timeline festival director Eugene Hernandez told Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr. on February 22. Additionally, sealing the deal, the Sundance Institute board voted earlier this week to move the festival to Boulder, we've learned. With a financially deep and culturally deep proposal, Boulder, which houses of the University of Colorado, put $34 million in tax incentives on the table over the decade of the new deal. Directly facing the challenges and inconvenience that have hobbled Sundance in Park City in recent years, the Boulder Convention and Visitors Bureau also detailed in their winning pitch a plethora of venues and lodgings that aim to make Sundance much more accessible and affordable for streamer and studio bosses as well as first time filmmakers going to Sundance on their own dime. 'Colorado is thrilled to welcome the Sundance Film Festival to its new home in Boulder starting in 2027,' Governor Jared Polis said today with news of the big move. 'Here in our state we celebrate the arts and film industry as a key economic driver, job creator, and important contributor to our thriving culture,' the two-term and openly gay Democrat added. 'Now, with the addition of the iconic Sundance Film Festival, we can expect even more jobs, a huge benefit for our small businesses including stores and restaurants. Thank you to the Sundance Institute and all of the partners like the City of Boulder, Visit Boulder, the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, and I also want to thank the bipartisan legislators and leadership who have worked tirelessly to make this possible.' The successful presence of the Sundance Institute's hot ticket Directors Lab in Boulder in May 2024 seems to have also helped pave the road to the festival ending up in the city, we hear. At 2.5 hours from LA via plane, Boulder may prove beneficial to those who suffered from the altitude of Park City. Skiing won't be right on Main Street like in Park City, but Boulder is just 5,420 ft above sea level compared to the 7,000 to 10,000 ft above sea level of the Utah resort town. 'From a sense of space perspective, it's this really vibrant town that's surrounded by nature,' Acting Sundance CEO Kelso noted of Boulder. 'You can imagine walking from venue to venue, metabolizing the film you just watched and communing with nature which is something Robert Redford felt so strongly about. When you think about a sense of place perspective, Boulder is a cool town, it's an arts town. There are poets, musicians and filmmakers who live here. It's a tech town. It's also a college town — 38,000 students attend University of Colorado Boulder, and that creates an opportunity for us to think about audience development in a more expansive way.' Hoping to clinch an 11th hour win, conservative Utah and its GOP Gov. Spencer Cox worked the phones and the budgets over the last week to find a way to keep Sundance, sources tell us. Sundance Institute Board Chair Ebs Burnough insisted this morning that 'politics is not the game we play,' but the fact is the winds have shifted more MAGA in the Beehive State over the past few years. In fact, in a political measure by any other name, Sundance has listed 'ethos' and 'inclusion and accessibility' among its self-declared 'seven overreaching focus areas' that set the criteria for a new home. In that context, as Deadline reported on March 12 and again on March 25, the past month saw the passage by the Utah legislature of a bill that bans the LGTBQ+ Pride Flag from being flown on and in government buildings like schools and even the City Hall of liberal-leaning Salt Lake City. Up against a deadline of today to sign House Bill 77, Gov. Cox hasn't said out loud yet if he will allow the clearly discriminatory act to become law. However, HB77 sponsors Rep. Trevor Lee and Sen. Daniel McCay have made no secret of their feelings about Sundance and their legislation. On March 12, after HB77 passed, McCay sent out a tweet claiming Sundance makes 'porn' and 'does not fit in Utah anymore' while reposting a Deadline story. 'Sundance has nothing to do with the bill,' Rep Lee said to Deadline in an email late Wednesnday. 'Also the governor will sign it, he agrees with the vast majority of Utahns that taxpayer funded entities should be politically neutral.' If Cox does sign the anti-Pride flag bill today, it will take effect in early May. Flying of the rainbow colored flag on or in a state-funded building will result in a $500 per day fine for each flag. All of which means, Sundance 2026 in Park City and SLC will likely be under the provisions of the anti-Pride flag law. The change to Boulder is a much needed jolt to the Sundance Film Festival which has been rather sleepy in its noise post-pandemic. Pre-pandemic, the festival was quite loud, from the women's marches during the early days of the first Trump administration to Taylor Swift debuting her Netflix documentary in 2020. Even the way business is conducted with film sales have changed. Gone are the days when streamers and distributors haggled all night to layout bids that were in the tens of millions of dollars. Now, given the winds of change in theatrical and streamers' needs, it just takes longer to make a sale at Sundance, read its most prolific film this past year, the Jennifer Lopez starring Kiss of the Spider Woman, just found a distributor in Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and LD Entertainment. Expected to be a bit of a blowout, the very last Sundance in Park City will take place from January 22 – February 1, 2026. 'We're already hard at work at the next Sundance Film Festival, festival director Hernadez admitted Thursday about Sundance's Utah finale next year. 'It will be really meaningful and special for us.' Then, on to Boulder. Best of Deadline '1923' Season 2 Release Schedule: When Do New Episodes Come Out? Which Colleen Hoover Books Are Becoming Movies? Sundance Breakout ‘Train Dreams' Acquired by Netflix

'Train Dreams,' a drama starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, has been acquired by Netflix out of Sundance. Our own review called it a 'patient, profound and painful experience' and compared it to the work of Terrence Malick. The movie, about a logger who is working on the railroad, was co-written and directed by Clint Bentley. Greg Kwedar co-wrote the screenplay with Bentley and the two co-wrote the Oscar-nominated 'Sing Sing.' Kerry Condon, William H. Macy and Clifton Collins Jr. also star. Black Bear and Kamala Films produced the film with Marissa McMahon, Teddy Schwarzman, Will Janowitz, Ashley Schlaifer and Michael Heimler. Edgerton and Kwedar are executive producers with Scott Hinckley and John Friedberg. The 'Train Dreams' deal is one of a precious few that have been made at Sundance 2025, continuing a recent trend of distributors holding back on major bidding wars at the Utah festival amid a time of cost-cutting in the film industry. One of the few other major deals so far has been for the Michael Shanks horror movie 'Together,' which was picked up by Neon. Netflix's deal also comes as the streamer has rolled out its 2025 release slate, which includes fall release dates for Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein,' Noah Baumbach's 'Jay Kelly' starring George Clooney, and Rian Johnson's third 'Knives Out' film, 'Wake Up Dead Man.' WME Independent negotiated the deal for 'Train Dreams.' The post Sundance Breakout 'Train Dreams' Acquired by Netflix appeared first on TheWrap.

‘I Love You Forever' Trailer: Sofia Black-D'Elia Falls for an Abusive Ray Nicholson in Hilarious Yet Poignant Anti-Rom-Com

As rom-coms have a resurgence in Hollywood, the anti-rom-com is on its way. Cue the ingenuous 'I Love You Forever,' which IndieWire can announce has been acquired by Utopia for theatrical distribution after having premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival. It's almost shocking to think that the pitch perfect tone-driven ode to millennial milieu is the directorial debut of co-writers Cazzie David and Elisa Kalani. In contrast, it makes perfect sense that ahead-of-her-time tastemaker Diablo Cody produced it. More from IndieWire Bong Joon Ho to Be Honored by the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures with 'Director's Inspiration' Exhibit Sundance 2025 Films Sold So Far: Netflix Buys Clint Bentley's 'Train Dreams' with Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones 'Single Drunk Female' breakout star Sofia Black-D'Elia leads the film as law student Mackenzie, who meets the man of her dreams, Finn (Ray Nicholson), at the birthday party of her bestie (writer/director David). However, charming broadcast journalist Finn is soon revealed to be a narcissist, and Mackenzie's perfect love story becomes a harrowing nightmare of living in an abusive relationship in plain sight. Raymond Cham Jr. and Jon Rudnitsky co-star. Co-writers/directors Kalani and David previously co-created the critically acclaimed web-series 'Eighty-Sixed.' David previously told IndieWire that 'I Love You Forever' isn't supposed to be a mainstream feature — rather, the indie was made for those who too have survived narcissistic abuse and been gaslit into doubting themselves. The film was also made to educate others while validating the experience. 'This film is probably not going to resonate with anyone who doesn't have a somewhat personal experience to a relationship like this,' David told IndieWire. 'We're very aware of that. But we just really wanted to make a movie that was a grounded representation of emotional abuse, particularly in an emotionally abusive relationship. People who have been through something like this can hopefully feel seen during such a confusing, isolating experience.' Plus, it is actually very funny, while still balancing the right tone of respectful seriousness during particularly triggering sequences. 'We love comedy, and we also like making things that have some kind of [message] and do mean something. This was a story we felt like we wanted to tell,' David continued. 'We really wanted to make a rom-com for our generation, something that just felt relatable to the dating pool now. While doing both of those things, we kind of came to this realization that a rom-com can also include meeting someone who ends up being toxic. We satirized the love-bombing, and that became our movie.' The IndieWire review compared 'I Love You Forever' to 'Fatal Attraction,' 'Promising Young Woman,' and 'American Pyscho' — at least in terms of Nicholson's turn as Finn. 'With Nicholson's smile that he inherited from his real-life father Jack Nicholson, it all makes the rom-com side of the romantic horror film feel more real,' the review reads. 'Nicholson sells the audience on Finn selling himself to Mackenzie, and it's not that Mackenzie is too blind to see his faults; it's just that Finn is that good of an emotional abuser. […] Just don't call the feature an erotic thriller. No, 'I Love You Forever' unfolds like a documentary to those who have lived a similar experience — and a stalker horror movie to others.' 'I Love You Forever' premieres at the Quad Cinema in New York on February 7 from Utopia, and will be available on digital on Valentine's Day, February 14. Check out the trailer below.
