(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating an alleged case of bullying involving two senior students at a boarding school in Sungai Udang, Melaka. The media had reported that more than 20 Form 3 female students were apparently forced to do the 'duck walk' for 30 minutes and perform squats while pulling their ears as punishment for returning late to their dormitory last Saturday. Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit said the matter is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, reported Bernama. 'We are waiting for the medical report as the complainant said her legs were injured due to the punishment,' he said. State education, higher education and religious affairs committee chairman Rahmad Mariman said the students had no authority to discipline their peers. He said the state viewed the incident seriously as it concerned the safety and welfare of students. Rahmad added that the state and district education offices would take a firm stance on bullying and urged schools to strengthen supervision and preventive measures.

Air Batu river turned black from effluent discharge, source still under probe, says Melaka CM's Dept
MELAKA, July 10 — The recent pollution in Sungai Air Batu near Kampung Paya Rumput, Sungai Udang, is believed to have been caused by effluent from a source still under investigation, according to the Melaka Chief Minister's Department. 'Preliminary checks found a significant change in the river's water colour, which had turned black, believed to be caused by effluent from a source still under investigation,' its Corporate Communications Division said in a statement today. It said the Melaka Department of Environment (DOE) was instructed to begin an immediate investigation upon receiving information about the incident on Tuesday (July 8). 'In response to local residents' concerns linking the incident to the Sungai Udang Landfill Site, investigations were also conducted at that location. 'So far, no leachate discharge has been detected during the inspection,' the department said. It said the Melaka DOE will continue to monitor and carry out periodic sampling should any discharge occur, to ensure full compliance with the Environmental Quality Standards. The statement added that the landfill site is under regular monitoring by the DOE, and enforcement actions have previously been taken against the site operator. The state government gave an assurance that a comprehensive investigation is underway, with the cooperation of various relevant agencies. 'Stern and uncompromising action will be taken against any party found to have violated environmental laws. 'The Melaka government is committed to ensuring the safety, health and well-being of the people remain a top priority,' the statement said. — Bernama

Prison officer brutally crushed beneath runaway cement lorry in Melaka
MELAKA, May 16 — A Malaysian Prisons Department officer was killed after being run over by a cement lorry that reportedly suffered brake failure at a traffic light junction along the Sungai Udang-Paya Rumput-Ayer Keroh (SPA) route yesterday. Sergeant Amal Nurlidar Ghazali, 42, a prison warder, died at the scene after she was trapped beneath the lorry in the 5.50pm incident, Harian Metro (HM) reported. Melaka Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the victim had stopped her Yamaha Ego Solariz at the traffic lights when the lorry, driven by a 49-year-old man travelling in the same direction, lost control. He said the driver swerved to avoid other vehicles, veering onto the road shoulder before hitting and running over the woman. 'As a result of the incident, the victim's leg was crushed and she sustained serious injuries to several parts of her body, including her face,' he was quoted as saying. Firefighters from the Masjid Tanah Fire and Rescue Station were deployed to the scene to extricate the victim's body from beneath the lorry. Her remains were later sent to the Forensic Department of Melaka Hospital for a post-mortem. Christopher told HM that initial findings suggest brake failure caused the crash, which was recorded on a witness's dashboard camera. He added that the driver tested negative for drugs and would be remanded at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court this morning. The lorry has been seized for inspection by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom), and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
