Chris Morris backs Aiden Markram to spark bidding war at SA20 auction
NEW DELHI: With the SA20 auction around the corner, former South African all-rounder expects to be among the biggest draws when bidding begins on September 9 in Johannesburg. "Sunrisers haven't retained him, but they do have a right-to-match card, meaning they can match the final bid for him and retain his services," Morris said, as quoted by SA20. "That opens the door for mind games -- other teams could bid aggressively to push his price high enough to make it difficult for the Sunrisers to bring him back," he added. Morris pointed to two franchises that could target the Proteas batter. "Two teams stand out to me: MI Cape Town, which would solve their captaincy question -- not that Rashid Khan is doing a bad job -- but having a successful local international captain at number four would be a big boost, especially since they've released Rassie van der Dussen, leaving a vacancy at number three. The other is Pretoria Capitals, who have one of the largest remaining purses. He's a local player, would fill their captaincy role, slot in at number three, and bring strong leadership after Rilee Rossouw's stint last year. Either way, Aiden Markram is going to be hot property," he said. The SA20 has grown quickly since its inception, with last year's auction attracting nearly 600 player registrations from around the world. This year's retained and pre-signed list already features big names such as Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and England's Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow. Each franchise was allowed a maximum of six retained or pre-signed players during the retention window, which closed on July 18, comprising up to three South African and three overseas players. Teams have also completed their six wildcard signings, with attention now shifting to the remaining slots. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A total purse of USD 7.4 million will be spent to fill the 84 available places at the September 9 auction in Johannesburg. For Season 4, a wildcard player could be any overseas cricketer or a South African who was part of the team's squad in Season 3. The new season begins on December 26, with the auction expected to set the tone for another blockbuster edition of South Africa's premier T20 competition.

Morris predicts bidding frenzy for Markram, Maphaka, and Brevis at SA20 Auction: 'It will be interesting to see'
As the SA20 is gearing up for its fourth season, a stoked Chris Morris expressed his thoughts on the upcoming auction of the league, which is scheduled to take place on September 9, 2025. SA20, which is South Africa's rendition of the IPL, is gearing up for its fourth season, and ahead of that, the much-anticipated auctions will take place. Given the talent that has been unleashed in the SA cricket lately, the upcoming auctions are expected to be the league's most competitive yet. The highly anticipated player auction is scheduled to take place on September 9 in Johannesburg. At least 84 player slots will be available this time. Moreover, the league has introduced new rules, including the Right to Match (RTM) card, which allows teams to retain players by matching the highest bid from rival teams. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Also Read | How Gautam Gambhir's simple plan transformed India's Test batting in England Chris Morris stoked about SA20 auction Former South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris expressed his thoughts on the upcoming auctions and could not hide his excitement. Speaking to SuperSport ahead of the Season 4 auction, Morris said, 'The auction is always exciting, no matter the tournament, but SA20 is the big one, with most of the players back in the pool. There have been a lot of retentions and several wild cards picked up, so it will be interesting to see how the teams go about building their squads. Some teams have plenty of money to spend, while others have already filled half their squads and don't have much left in the purse. This means a lot of domestic players will be putting their hands up this season, and they're likely to get opportunities because of the financial dynamics at play. I've already started my homework, looking at the teams, the squads, and who's available, and I have a few ideas of where players might land. It's a great time of the year, and SA20 is going to be even bigger this season.' The six SA20 franchises will have a combined budget of $7.4 million to fill 84 slots and finalise their squads in what is set to be the biggest auction since the league's 2022 launch. When asked about potential players who could fetch the highest bids, Morris named Aiden Markram, who was not retained by the Sunrisers Eastern Cape 'Sunrisers haven't retained him, but they do have a right-to-match card, meaning they can match the final bid for him and retain his services. That opens the door for mind games — other teams could bid aggressively to push his price high enough to make it difficult for the Sunrisers to bring him back. Two teams stand out to me: MI Cape Town, which would solve their captaincy question — not that Rashid Khan is doing a bad job — but having a successful local international captain at number four would be a big boost, especially since they've released Rassie van der Dussen, leaving a vacancy at number three. He's a local player, would fill their captaincy role, slot in at number three, and bring strong leadership after Rilee Rossouw's stint last year. Either way, Aiden Markram is going to be hot property.' Around 600 players registered for the SA20 auction last year, the number could increase this year. Moreover, when it comes to the list of retained and pre-signed players, the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and England's Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow are already in it. Bidding wars expected at SA20 auction Morris expects a mix of rising stars and established players to ignite intense bidding wars at the auction. 'I think Kwena Maphaka is going to be at the centre of a bidding frenzy. Dewald Brevis is another, given he hasn't been retained. Rassie van der Dussen, with his experience, could also be in demand. Personally, I always look out for the player who ends up going for a surprisingly high price — the buy of the tournament that no one saw coming. For me, Delano Potgieter could be that player. He's been successful in SA20, has done well for MI Cape Town, and is a proven performer in domestic cricket. He covers multiple roles and adds great balance to a squad — the kind of player I'd sign straight away.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The head of cricket operations of the SA20, Stephen Cook, also had some words to describe the forthcoming SA20 auction. 'The SA20 Player Auction is always a very exciting time in the build-up to the new season. This year's event will be even more entertaining due to the number of player slots and the maximum USD 7.4 million purse available. Player registrations have been flooding in, with South African and overseas players putting their hat in the ring for valuable opportunities.' He told SuperSport Don't miss a moment of the SA20 Auction on September 9th! Catch all the action LIVE from 5 PM onwards on JioHotstar and stream it on the official SA20 YouTube channel.

'Who Do You Think You Are?': Harry Brook Mercilessly Sledges Nitish Kumar Reddy On Day 5
Nitish Kumar Reddy faced intense sledging from Harry Brook during the final day of the third Test. Brook's taunts and Reddy's dismissal by Chris Woakes left India in trouble. Nitish Kumar Reddy found himself at the heart of a tense and emotional passage of play that unfolded on the final day of play during the third Test between India and England. After a chirpy Day 3 and 4, the emotional stakes remained high heading into Day 5, with England taking their turn to retaliate. Nitish Kumar Reddy, who had been involved in the previous day's confrontation, bore the brunt of England's verbal assault. When he came out to bat at No. 9 following the dismissals of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Washington Sundar, Reddy became the primary target for England's sledging unit. Harry Brook, the world's top-ranked batter, was particularly relentless. Constantly in Reddy's ear, Brook reminded the Indian all-rounder of their shared history in the IPL, saying during the 30th over: 'Who do you think you are? I remember when we were with the Sunrisers, you didn't say anything there." He followed it up with another jab, stating: 'Jaddu needs to score all the runs. This is not IPL." Harry Brook chirping relentlessly from second slip this morning. 'Not at the IPL now," he tells his old Sunrisers team-mate Nitish Kumar Reddy. 'Jaddu's got to score them all."— Matt Roller (@mroller98) July 14, 2025 The personal nature of the remarks carried extra weight. Reddy and Brook were teammates at Sunrisers Hyderabad not long ago. As if the sledging weren't enough, Reddy's stay at the crease ended in disappointment. Chris Woakes, who had gone wicketless in the second innings until that point, claimed Reddy's scalp with a well-pitched delivery outside off stump. Reddy attempted a soft push but only managed to edge it behind to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. The dismissal marked the eighth Indian wicket, leaving the hosts in a perilous position as England pressed forward, hungry for a victory that would give them the upper hand in the series. view comments First Published: July 14, 2025, 18:50 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Harry Brook mercilessly hounds Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ben Stokes joins bitter sledging as England take revenge at Lord's
Nitish Kumar Reddy bore the brunt of what transpired in the final over of Day 3 of the third Test between the Indian fielders led by captain Shubman Gill and England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. It gave an entirely different colour to the India vs England Test series. Zak Crawley's blatant time-wasting tactics angered Shubman Gill to such an extent that he used the choicest words and hand gestures to rattle the England opener. The tension continued the next day as India's bowlers gave a send-off to most of the England batters -- India pacer Mohammed Siraj was fined 15% of his match fee for his aggressive send-off to Ben Duckett. Late on Day 4 and early part of Day 5, it was England's turn to take revenge and quite a bitter one. Harry Brook sledges Nitish Kumar Reddy India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who played a part in the Day 3 squabble, was sledged mercilessly by the England fielders but none were more relentless than Harry Brook. The No.1-ranked batter was constantly breathing down Nitish Reddy's neck when the India all-rounder came out to bat at No.9 after India lost Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Washington Sundar. In the 30th over, Brook was caught chirping, 'Who do you think you are? I remember when we were with the Sunrisers, you didn't say anything there.' A ball later, he said, "Jaddu needs to score all the runs. This is not IPL," to Reddy. Interestingly, Brook and Nitish Reddy were teammates at the Sunrisers Hyderabad not too long ago. While Nitish was retained by SRH, Brook was bought by Delhi Capitals in the mega auction. The England batter, however, pulled out of the IPL and attracted a two-year ban from participating in the league. Ben Stokes joins the bitter sledging of Nitish Kumar Reddy If Brook going after Nitish Reddy was not enough, England captain Ben Stokes also joined in. He bowled the last ball of the next over, which was successfully defended by Nitish Reddy, only to hear a mouthful from the England skipper. Stokes had a lot to say to Nitish, who shook his head in response. In between, Nitish showed a lot of courage with his solid defence. He also hit a beautiful cover drive off Strokes to get a boundary. But after serving a marathon spell from the England captain, Nitish got a faint nick through to England keeper Jamie Smith in the last over before lunch on Day 5, bowled by Chris Woakes. Nitish's dismissal for 13 meant India were tottering at 112 for eight chasing 193. Starting the day at 58 for four and needing another 135 runs on a rapidly deteriorating surface with variable bounce, India needed their experienced batters to fire for their fourth success at the iconic ground since 1932 but it was not to be. The loss of Rishabh Pant (9 off 12 balls), KL Rahul (39 off 58) and Washington Sundar (0 off 4) inside the first hour made chasing 193 an improbable task for India.
