Sapphire Coast preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, June 8, 2025

Trainer Anthony Mountney is banking on King Charles' love of the Sapphire Coast track to overcome a jump in grade and a tricky inside draw. King Charles has built a strong record on the southern New South Wales track with two wins, two seconds and fourth from five starts. His charged home to win two runs ago before a second to The Unique Star who has since won at Warwick Farm during the week. While those two runs were in Benchmark 58 races over 1007m and 1010m respectively, he steps up to 1212m in the Benchmark 66 Handicap where he drawn barrier 1. 'He really does race well at the track,' said Mountney. 'The wetter the better it would be for him. I would look for a really wet track somewhere else for him but he just enjoys the track there so much. 'There is a bit of speed in this race so that should allow him to get off the fence. 'The draw down low in the gates isn't ideal for him. He's a horse who likes to come out wider down the centre of the track. 'He's a funny horse. He's got form over 1000 metres and two wins over a mile but hasn't got anything in between. 'He is strong late and has won on the soft there before including two starts back although he is a heavy track specialist. 'His confidence is up and I expect him to run well. He just needs to get away from the rail.' While Mountney would love the track to be in the heavy range for King Charles, it's the opposite for stablemate Vis I Do who would appreciate a dry track. The five-year-old failed on the wet at his only run at the Sapphire Coast two starts ago before a solid length second behind Grinzinger Moon on a Good 4 at Albury last time out. 'He failed at his last start here because it was a heavy track and he just doesn't handle wet tracks,' he said. 'I took him to Albury and I thought he ran a fabulous race back on top of the ground. 'He didn't get to follow the right horse into the race while the leader was doing it's own thing. 'With the right run into it, I think he could have stretched the winner.' That was over 1175m but the gelding drops back a little in trip when he lines up in the Class 3 Handicap (1010m) although Mountney isn't too concerned. 'He is coming back in trip but I don't think that will worry him,' he said. 'I have kept him very fresh and his work has been super.' Mountney also has two three-year-olds making their race debut together in the Super Maiden Handicap (1212m) and expects both to acquit themselves very well. Luminesce rolled forward to take the lead and held on to win her first barrier trial at Kembla on May 12 before sitting back and wide when last without being pushed in her second heat on Wednesday. 'She is a filly with a fair bit of quality and one we have had a fair bit of time for,' Mountney said. 'Naturally she is still learning and can do things wrong. 'If she has her mind on the job, she will be very strong in this race.' Pancake Pete also had his only trial at Kembla on May 12 when held into the straight when fifth. 'He's has been working particularly well at home with Jacob's Time. He breezed up lovely on Friday morning,' he said. 'He will probably be the longest odds of all my horses but he is worth a little each-way bet.' Will be better for the experience and looks like she will appreciate the step up to 1212m. INCHYRA (2) ran in the Super Maiden here over this distance that same day and closed nicely through the pack from last to finish second behind Platinum Ridge. Drawn to settle closer. LUMINESCE (5) was good winning her May 12 trial at Kembla and wasn't pushed in her heat there on Wednesday. Bet: She's In Overdrive to win RACE 5: BRISTOL PAINTS PAMBULA SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP 1212m VEGAS DREAM (8) led all-the-way to beat Star Bling over this track and distance on a Heavy 9 before returning a month later with a nose second behind Capital Heart. Raced in TAB Highways last campaign including a two length sixth to Everido and Sunchyme at Kembla on The Gong Day. KING CHARLES (14) loves racing at this track where he has two wins over 1000m, two seconds and a fourth. Yet to place in seven runs at the 1200m but has won over 1600m. Bet: Vegas Dream to win RACE 6: SAPPHIRE COAST BUSLINES BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1413m MAJOR DESIRE (11) hadn't placed in three first-up runs until kicking off this preparation with a length second behind the in-form Hell Of A Fox over 1212m here three weeks ago. Gosford, Inverell previews: Adam Duggan hoping for a Divine result in the wet

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Trainer Adam Duggan had a nice opinion of Divine Bene in his early trackwork and trials but a couple of unflattering runs to start his career put that into question. It wasn't until Divine Bene got onto a wet track that he started to perform to a higher level and placed in three consecutive runs as he built into his first campaign. 'He is a horse I had a bit of time for early days but didn't show a lot in his first couple of runs,' said Duggan. 'Once we got him going with a couple of runs under his belt, we worked out he didn't have much of a turn of foot but he could sustain the same speed throughout. 'We also found he had a real liking for wet track. I don't think I've had a horse who has had so many runs on a wet track.' Divine Bene has raced on wet ground in eight of the 10 career starts with seven of them on heavy where he has a win and four minor placings. He returned this campaign with a nice win first-up over 1550m on the Beaumont before a third to Lutetia at Newcastle both on Heavy 8 tracks before a second to Sirius Flyer in a Soft 5 at Quirindi last start. 'It probably wasn't wet enough for him at Quirindi the other day,' he said. The four-year-old gets his preferred conditions when steps out in the Class 1 Handicap (1200m). 'I'm happy to have Ash Morgan back on. He rode him really well to win first-up,' Duggan said. 'He's also in at Inverell. I'll discuss it with his owners but Gosford is my preferred option.' Duggan also has Purple Haze entered for the Super Maiden Handicap (1200m) on his home track. The gelding battled away for third to Yes Siree on a Heavy 10 at Wyong on debut on May 1. 'He has been a real work in progress,' said Duggan. 'He was aided by a fair few scratchings in a fairly soft race on debut if I'm being honest but in saying that, I would be surprised if he doesn't improve. 'I think the 1200m will suit him better and eventually a bit further than that.' Warwick Farm trainer Clarry Conners has been pleased with the way Okami Star has raced this campaign and gives him a change of securing another win in the Class 1 Handicap (1600m). The gelding resumed with a second to Pelosa at Hawkesbury followed by a fifth at Kembla before breaking through with a narrow win from Murphilly at Wyong. Last start, he boxed on a long neck fourth to Ocean One at Hawkesbury. 'He has come back a nice horse this time in,' said Conners. 'At Hawkesbury last start, he went around and got to the front then just eased up on him. 'He's a big striding horse and it would have been better if he kept going on him. 'I'm happy with the horse though.' Conners also feels Proclivity can bounce back from a luckless run last start when he contests the 2&3YO Maiden Handicap (1600m). After a debut second to Caltsar at Newcastle, the gelding finished sixth to Monte Veebee at Kembla. 'It was a good run at Newcastle on debut then at Kembla everything went wrong. He got knocked down and pushed back,' he said. 'Aaron Bullock rode him in his first start and was impressed with the horse. 'I'm very happy to be able to get him again this week. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ A slow start and untimely bump put paid to the chances of Angels Cloud last start but trainer Marc Quinn couldn't be happier with his mare and expects her to break through for a well-earned win when she heads to Inverell. Angels Cloud started a $1.90 favourite at Glen Innes earlier this month following three handy placings since joining Quinn's stable. Unfortunately, she was put out of business in the first couple of strides when she settled further back than expected on her way to finishing second behind Immortal Lass. 'I really thought she would have won at Glen Innes the other day but she took a backwards step when the gates opened and Cody's (Morgan) horse got a march on us and that was the end of the race for her,' said Quinn. 'She has had a good couple of weeks since then. 'Obviously last week was a bit of a washout for us. We missed trackwork for a couple of days but they are not going to lose much fitness going on the walker for a couple of days. 'Despite the weather, the horses coped with it really well and she had a lovely gallop on Saturday.' Angels Cloud has drawn ideally on barrier 4 in the Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1100m) with Matthew McGuren to again partner her. 'She has drawn well and Matthew decided to stick with her which is good,' he said. 'All she needs to do is step away and I think she will be hard to beat. Quinn is weighing up his options for Perhaps Perhaps in the Class 1 and Maiden Plate (1800m) but expects her to run a much improved race if she does start. The four-year-old debuted for Quinn with a handy fifth to Justifiably at Port Macquarie on April 19 before backing up on a heavy track there eight days later when down the order behind Imarealamerican over 1500m. She then finished a somewhat unlucky fifth to Visualise over 1400m at Glen Innes. 'Her first run for us was really good and we thought we would try and rider her handier second-up but I don't think she appreciated that and the quick back-up,' he said. 'We didn't want to come back in distance but there wasn't a lot of options for her after so we took her to Glen Innes. 'I thought the run was passable and the step up to 1800m suits her quite well.'

Port Macquarie preview, best bets and inside mail for Sunday April 27, 2025

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. It has taken a little longer than originally planned but trainer Glen Milligan finally has Golden Honour up to his ideal trip. The five-year-old has won three races between 1450m and 1600m and Milligan wanted to get him out to those distances again after the gelding's fast-closing third behind Typhoon Neta when resuming over 1100m at Port Macquarie back in February. 'Jon Grisedale rode him first-up and was rapt with him. He said this horse will knock up winning races when he gets out over further,' said Milligan. 'We just had a couple of hiccups along the way and haven't been able to step him up to this trip until now.' Golden Honour's latest run was a seventh behind King Larry in a Benchmark 66 over 1200m here at Port Macquarie on April 11. He drops back to a Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1500m this weekend with stable apprentice Teighan Worsnop's claim bringing him down to 59.5kg. 'He's going well without winning and working to the line nicely,' Milligan said. 'He goes up in weight again coming back to a (benchmark) 58 and he is looking for this trip now. 'He will need a little bit of luck from the alley. They jump and start turning after a furlong there. 'Hopefully they can slot in somewhere midfield and see if he's good enough to run over the top of them.' • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! While Milligan rates Golden Honour a good each-way chance, he feels Kermitisapet is his best hope for the day in the opening race. The daughter of Kermadec ran a solid third on debut on a heavy track at Tuncurry last September before finishing down the order at Port Macquarie and going for spell. She resumes in the Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1000m) where she opened at $26 with TAB fixed odds. 'I think she is great value. I thought she would be under $10,' he said. 'She has come back well and this a country only maiden. 'There are couple in there with nice trial form but that's different to race form. 'The only thing is she might get back a little bit but is she jumps and isn't too far off them, she can win. 'She's my best chance for the day.' Milligan also has Saint Cayetano making his debut in the race but said he still has a bit to learn and will be better in time and over a mile. Punch One Out and new stable recruit Chelsea both step out in the Super Maiden Handicap (1200m). Punch One Out raced well in his first campaign with a second to Lightscameraaction over 1006m here at his third start while he also had two handy fourth placings. 'He's a horse that's got plenty of upside but mentally he's not there yet,' said Milligan. 'We were quite happy with him and his last couple of starts were good. 'The only thing that went against him, he got back at his last run and it helps if you can race on speed at Port Macquarie at present for some reason. 'He goes into this race without any trials under his belt but he has had a couple of jumpouts. 'He is doing everything right, just whether he is good enough to win first-up over 1200m.' Chelsea, a $1m Easter Yearling in 2023, was bought by Milligan in late February for $18,000 after he had just two starts for Chris Waller. 'Mentally and physically, he's still six months away but he has improved every time I have galloped him,' he said. 'He's going to get out over a mile in time.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ PORT MACQUARIE TIPS BEST BET Race 6 No.6: CONFEDERATE LADY Will take benefit from her first-up placing and looks hard to beat. Port Macquarie preview, best bets and inside mail for Sunday April 27, 2025

'Hopefully they can slot in somewhere midfield and see if he's good enough to run over the top of them.' While Milligan rates Golden Honour a good each-way chance, he feels Kermitisapet is his best hope for the day in the opening race. 'He's going to get out over a mile in time.' â– â– â– â– â– PORT MACQUARIE TIPS BEST BET Race 6 No.6: CONFEDERATE LADY Will take benefit from her first-up placing and looks hard to beat.
