Alexander Isak slammed for 'disrespecting' Newcastle as Liverpool transfer saga continues

Alexander Isak has gone on strike at Newcastle, where he is refusing to play in an attempt to force through a mega-money transfer to Liverpool before the window closes Peter Crouch has slammed Alexander Isak for downing tools at Newcastle in an effort to force through a move to Liverpool. ‌ Isak is refusing to play again for the Magpies in the hope that Liverpool return with an improved offer after their £120m bid was rejected earlier this month. The Swedish striker has three years left on his contract with Newcastle, but informed the club last month he wanted to explore other opportunities. ‌ Liverpool are currently prioritising their defence, having agreed a £26million deal to sign Parma's Giovanni Leoni while continuing negotiations with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi. ‌ That has left Isak hanging, with the transfer window closing on September 1. Crouch has criticised the Swede's behaviour, but feels he could play into the hands of his old club. 'I don't like the way it's been handled,' Crouch told Mirror Football. 'I think Newcastle have been disrespected by the player and it leaves a bit of a sour taste. No one likes to see it. 'The fans and the club have been good with Isak, so going on strike just feels like a step too far, especially if you're under contract. Having said that, having played for Liverpool, to see Alexander Isak in a Liverpool shirt would be unbelievable.' Crouch was transferred nine times during his career but never went to such extreme measures to get his way. 'It's a big gamble. It feels like the wrong play,' he added. 'Alexander Isak isn't the first player to go on strike to try and force a move through. Plenty of players have done that, but Newcastle is not a small club. It's a massive club and not one that necessarily has to sell. ‌ 'It's not like they are in dire straits. The fans expect them to be competing with Liverpool, not selling their best players to them. I understand their stance that they don't want to sell and I agree with it." Newcastle are insistent that Isak is not for sale at any price and that they expect him to play for Eddie Howe's side this season. If Liverpool don't return with another bid and the window closes, then the 25-year-old will be left to pick up the pieces. Crouch feels that, despite the bitterness, things could still be patched up in the north east. " Cristiano Ronaldo had that famous spot with Wayne Rooney in the World Cup and then ended up having the season of his life for Manchester United," he said. "A couple of goals changed his situation very quickly. But at the moment, it feels too far gone. But if he's integrated again he will have to put up with a few boos and will be a target for a while for Newcastle fans. But if you start scoring goals, I think things can change very quickly." Peter Crouch was speaking ahead of Paddy Power's most generous start to a season ever. Paddy Power loses millions and has 'pants pulled down' after offer exploited

The action-packed Nations League semi-final between Spain and France may have been a stellar watch for football fans but not for Paddy Power who had a night to forget Paddy Power were the grand losers after the Nations League thriller between Spain and France - with the gambling company losing millions. The second of the two semi-finals kicked off on Thursday and it was the Euro 2024 holders that got off to a fast start. Nico Williams and Mikel Merino scored within three minutes of each other to hand Spain a healthy lead going into the second half. It only just got better for the Spaniards who managed to score another two goals in quick succession, this time with only two minutes separating a Lamine Yamal penalty and a Pedri strike. ‌ A Kylian Mbappe spot-kick got France seemed to have given them a fighting chance but it was the 17-year-old superstar who added to the scoresheet again to give his side a whopping 5-1 lead with just over 20 minutes to go. ‌ Didier Deschamps' side attempted to stage a late comeback after Rayan Cherki's stunning goal which cut the deficit to three. But even an own goal form Vivian and a stoppage-time header from Randal Kolo Muani wasn't enough as they fell to a 5-4 defeat. While football fans across the globe were treated to an immensely entertaining match between two of the best international teams on the planet, those at Paddy Power didn't share the same enthusiasm. The match was a massively costly one for the company due to punters exploiting the offer of the Super Sub which has been offered for 973 matches over a span of 18 months. The Super Sub is activated when a bet stays live and continues onto a substituted player if they're taken off and given the fact that there were 10 subs in Thursday's match, the offer cost Paddy Power more money than it had ever done before. The company lost £500,000 after Vivian came on for Robin Le Normand in the 77th minute and committed a foul just minutes later. ‌ Samu Aghehowa coming on for Mikel Oyarzabal and having a shot on target also hit the business where it hurts while Gavi's booking after his 91st minute introduction for Merino saw punters win £200,000. A Paddy Power spokesman said: "I thought the Nations League was supposed to be boring? I wish it bloody was! But fair play to the punters. They've come in, taken advantage of Super Sub and absolutely pulled our pants down, leaving us licking our wounds at Power Tower today." ‌ Despite France's defeat, Rayan Cherki - who was reportedly edging closer to a move with Manchester City - scored a stunning strike and admitted after the game that he'll soon become a Citizen. "Yes… it's getting done," he said to Telefoot when asked about the progress of his move to City. "But you already know my answer, everybody knows. But there's still a game to play. Now we have to enjoy and give everything, but after it will be done." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. ‘We've lost millions' – Punters clean up as Paddy Power suffer ‘one of the worst days' in their history

PADDY POWER were left reeling after last night's Nations League thriller between Spain and France helped punters cash in to the tune of millions! The nine-goal spectacular, which ended 5-4 to Spain, triggered one of the worst financial batterings in the bookmaker's history, thanks mainly to their own Super Sub promotion. Find The Sun's betting publishing principles here 1 Super Sub means if your selected player is substituted, your bet rolls over to their replacement - and it backfired in spectacular fashion. Over the last 18 months, it's featured in 973 games. But none have come close to stinging their pockets quite like this encounter. It's understood the bookmaker lost 'millions upon millions' – all down to a series of hugely punter-favourable results. Among the killer blows: Dani Vivian replacing Robin Le Normand and immediately giving away a foul, which cost them half a million quid. Samu came on for Mikel Oyarzabal in the 77th-minute, and had a shot on target, which too cost Paddy Power a small fortune. Then Gavi strolled on in injury time, picked up a yellow card in the 97th minute, and cost Paddy another £200k! A Paddy Power spokesman said: "I thought the Nations League was supposed to be boring? I wish it bloody was! "But fair play to the punters. They've come in, taken advantage of Super Sub and absolutely pulled our pants down, leaving us licking our wounds at Power Tower today."
