Alexander Isak slammed for 'disrespecting' Newcastle as Liverpool transfer saga continues
Peter Crouch has slammed Alexander Isak for downing tools at Newcastle in an effort to force through a move to Liverpool.
Isak is refusing to play again for the Magpies in the hope that Liverpool return with an improved offer after their £120m bid was rejected earlier this month. The Swedish striker has three years left on his contract with Newcastle, but informed the club last month he wanted to explore other opportunities.
Liverpool are currently prioritising their defence, having agreed a £26million deal to sign Parma's Giovanni Leoni while continuing negotiations with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi.
That has left Isak hanging, with the transfer window closing on September 1. Crouch has criticised the Swede's behaviour, but feels he could play into the hands of his old club.
'I don't like the way it's been handled,' Crouch told Mirror Football. 'I think Newcastle have been disrespected by the player and it leaves a bit of a sour taste. No one likes to see it.
'The fans and the club have been good with Isak, so going on strike just feels like a step too far, especially if you're under contract. Having said that, having played for Liverpool, to see Alexander Isak in a Liverpool shirt would be unbelievable.'
Crouch was transferred nine times during his career but never went to such extreme measures to get his way.
'It's a big gamble. It feels like the wrong play,' he added. 'Alexander Isak isn't the first player to go on strike to try and force a move through. Plenty of players have done that, but Newcastle is not a small club. It's a massive club and not one that necessarily has to sell.
'It's not like they are in dire straits. The fans expect them to be competing with Liverpool, not selling their best players to them. I understand their stance that they don't want to sell and I agree with it."
Newcastle are insistent that Isak is not for sale at any price and that they expect him to play for Eddie Howe's side this season. If Liverpool don't return with another bid and the window closes, then the 25-year-old will be left to pick up the pieces.
Crouch feels that, despite the bitterness, things could still be patched up in the north east. " Cristiano Ronaldo had that famous spot with Wayne Rooney in the World Cup and then ended up having the season of his life for Manchester United," he said.
"A couple of goals changed his situation very quickly. But at the moment, it feels too far gone. But if he's integrated again he will have to put up with a few boos and will be a target for a while for Newcastle fans. But if you start scoring goals, I think things can change very quickly."
Peter Crouch was speaking ahead of Paddy Power's most generous start to a season ever. With Super Sub your bet carries on – even if the player you've bet on comes off, meaning even more chances to win. With more FREE Bet Builders than ever before, there's nowhere better to place your punt.

Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi included in Crystal Palace side to face Chelsea
Reports had emerged on Saturday that Eze was set not to be involved at Stamford Bridge as talks continue with Tottenham over a move for the England midfielder. Palace captain Guehi also started for Oliver Glasner's side. The 25-year-old defender, who is in the final 12 months of his contract, has been linked with a move to Liverpool. The Palace. Your XI to take on Chelsea 🫡 — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) August 17, 2025 Following Palace's victory over Liverpool in the Community Shield, Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted the speculation over Guehi's future 'needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.' Eze also played a crucial role as Palace won the FA Cup last season, beating Manchester City at Wembley. Palace boss Oliver Glasner played down reports a deal was close for either player to be leaving Selhurst Park. 'Marc (Guehi) and Ebs (Eze) trained well the whole week. Then of course there is no reason not to start him,' Glasner told Sky Sports ahead of kick-off at Stamford Bridge. '(So) good advice to all the children who are watching us now (in this interview) – don't believe everything you are reading in the newspapers.' Eze, 27, joined Palace in 2020 from QPR and has gone on to win 11 England caps. Spurs boss Thomas Frank is in need of creativity after chief playmaker James Maddison ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and with fellow midfielder Dejan Kulusevski also still sidelined. After a failed pursuit of Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White last month, Spurs have this week ramped up their transfer activity, opening talks with Manchester City on Monday over the signing of versatile attacker Savinho and now in discussions with Palace over Eze. Speaking after Tottenham's 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday, Frank was asked specifically about Eze, but would not be drawn on the reports. 'I have that nice principle that I would like to speak about the players that are in-house, and all the other speculations I don't want to speak too much about that,' the Dane said.

Eddie Howe: Others at Newcastle dealing with whether Alexander Isak faces fine
The Sweden striker, who was the subject of a rejected bid from Liverpool, has been trying to force a move away from St James' Park and has been training alone after refusing to play in some pre-season matches. He was not involved as Newcastle kicked off their Premier League campaign with a goalless draw at Aston Villa, where they failed to score against 10 men. Asked whether Isak was facing a fine, Howe said: 'Other people are dealing with that issue. I'm concentrating on the team and our next game.' The saga surrounding Isak's future has exacerbated a difficult transfer window, which has seen the Magpies miss out on a number of targets, including Benjamin Sesko. Howe reiterated the club's desire to sign a new striker, regardless of where Isak was after the window closes. 'I think it's been my wish to get a striker when we needed to replace Callum Wilson,' he added. 'I can't say that enough. It's not like we're looking at any other area. "I can't be negative today. The players stood up. I think they were really good mentally today" Hear from Eddie Howe after our opening day draw with Aston Villa 🎥 — Newcastle United (@NUFC) August 16, 2025 'We've been looking to recruit a striker to replace Callum. And Callum is a big miss, not just his playing ability, but his personality, so that's what we're looking to do.' Aston Villa did well to take a point after having to play the final 30 minutes with 10 men following Ezri Konsa's red card. Debutant goalkeeper Marco Bizot did well, standing in for the suspended Emiliano Martinez. Villa boss Unai Emery said: 'Fantastic, because it was his debut at home, against Newcastle. There are a lot of tactical ways we needed to do with the goalkeeper. What a debut 😍🧤 Your #AVLNEW Player of the Match: Marco Bizot!@adidas || #UpTheVilla — Aston Villa (@AVFCOfficial) August 17, 2025 'He tried them and he was focusing to try to start two-one, three-two, with our centre-backs and midfielders, sometimes getting the full-backs involved and getting the ball to (Ollie) Watkins. 'He took some risk and played with confidence. 'His first save gave him confidence to play and feel strong in our structure. I am so happy because we need our players, and we will need him.'

Yoane Wissa's future needs to be resolved soon – Brentford boss Keith Andrews
Wissa was not involved in Sunday's Premier League opener at Nottingham Forest, where the Bees went down to a 3-1 defeat. The 28-year-old wants to follow Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard out of the club during the summer transfer window, with Newcastle strongly linked with a bid, and Andrews said before the match he was not in the right head space to play. 'It's a day-by-day one in terms of Wiss,' the Irishman said. 'As far as I know nothing else has happened today, definitely didn't yesterday, so as it was really. 'I have no idea what the situation will be, I have been up here since yesterday so we will deal with that during the week. 'Hopefully it can resolve itself sooner rather than later.' Andrews, whose first game in management could not have gone much worse as Forest rampaged to a 3-0 half-time lead thanks to Chris Wood's double and Dan Ndoye's header, insists the club-record signing of Dango Ouattara will not start a domino effect of movement. 'I don't see it, I see Dango as Bryan's replacement in terms of that area of the pitch, I see him as a versatile forward that I am really happy we have managed to get on board,' Andrews added, after seeing Igor Thiago score a second-half penalty. 'We weren't really aware he would be available, as soon as we knew it was a pretty easy decision to get him on board. 'Thankfully the club have been able to do that and it is a really significant investment for us. It will be a brilliant investment.' Forest made a mockery of Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-match worries. Nuno expressed his 'concern' for the campaign ahead of the match, citing a lack of options in his squad. After new signings Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were unveiled before kick-off, their new team-mates put on a show. But Nuno says the display does not change Forest's situation, with Arnaud Kalimuendo having a medical ahead of a move from Rennes and links to Juventus' Douglas Luiz and Manchester City's Rico Lewis. 'The needs of the squad are still there, it doesn't change anything,' he said. 'We are going to go day-by-day. 'We still need. Hopefully this work continues. The sooner we settle down the squad the better. 'The club knows the needs of the squad so we have to be patient and see. The faster they come, the better. 'This week a lot of things are going to happen, not only Forest, I think a lot of teams are still operating in the market. We have to wait and be patient. 'Of course (I feel better). It doesn't change, the needs are clear, the club knows. Now I am delighted, I just want to go home and celebrate because it is a beautiful start to the season. I couldn't have expected better than this.'
