Kuwait launches Arab Cup campaign with commanding win over Morocco
KUWAIT CITY, May 6: The 10th Arab Handball Cup, currently underway in Kuwait and running through the 11th of this month, opened to widespread praise from Arab federation heads and officials from the Asian Handball Federation. All commended the Supreme Organizing Committee and tournament working groups for their professionalism, reaffirming Kuwait's reputation and experience in hosting major sporting events. The host nation got off to a winning start in the group stage, defeating Morocco 39-29 in their opening match. Kuwaiti goalkeeper Hassan Safar was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance. In other first-round results, Bahrain edged Iraq 28-26, while Qatar defeated Saudi Arabia 31-22. Bader Al-Dhiyab, Vice President of the International Handball Federation, applauded Kuwait's long-standing excellence in organizing international tournaments. He expressed hope for a high level of play from all participating teams, who represent both Asia and Africa. 'The Asian Handball Federation fully supports Kuwait in hosting this Arab Championship,' Al-Dhiyab said, voicing confidence in Kuwait's youth to ensure the tournament's success. Dr. Ahmed Al-Obaidi, President of the Iraqi Handball Federation, said he was delighted to participate, especially since the event is being held in Kuwait, widely recognized for its top-tier event organization. The championship officially opened two days ago at Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex, with nine Arab teams participating. Held under the patronage of the Minister of Information, Culture, and State for Youth Affairs, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, the opening ceremony featured laser displays by local youth groups and a welcome performance by artist Hamoud Al-Khadher. Bashar Abdullah, Acting Director General of the Public Authority for Sports and representative of the tournament sponsor, emphasized the importance of bringing the Arab Championship back to Kuwait after a long hiatus. 'This event marks a milestone for Arab handball,' he said, wishing the teams success in presenting competitive, high-level matches. He also praised the organizing committee for the event's excellent coordination, which aligns with the Authority's strategy to host major sports events in Kuwait. President of the Saudi Handball Federation, Fadel Al-Nemer, extended his gratitude to Kuwait's political leadership, led by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, for hosting the tournament, a return to Kuwait 46 years after it first hosted the event. He Nemer commended Minister Al-Mutairi's support and the Kuwait Handball Federation's professional execution. He expressed joy at the tournament coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Arab Handball Federation's founding in 1975. He also reaffirmed the Federation's continued mission to organize tournaments for all categories to promote and develop the sport across the Arab world. The prestigious 32nd edition of the UAE President's Cup Series for Purebred Arabian Horses is all set to begin this Sunday at the historic Ksar Said Racecourse in Tunisia. This highly anticipated event marks the start of another exciting chapter in the renowned series, celebrating the heritage and excellence of Purebred Arabian racing on an international stage. It will be held under the patronage and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the UAE, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court. This season's UAE President's Cup Series boasts a prize pool exceeding Dhs15 million, cementing its status as the most valuable and sought-after series in the history of Purebred Arabian horse racing. This reflects the wise leadership's commitment to developing the sport, supporting owners and breeders worldwide. The Tunisian leg of the race will host 15 top contenders from Tunisia and North Africa, aged four and above, competing in a Group 1 race over a 2000m dirt track. With a prize of TND 500,000, it stands as one of the most lucrative races in Tunisia's horse racing calendar. Leading the pack are Libyan horses Hatim (TM Fred Texas) and Lasvegas, alongside strong competitors such as Irak, Izmir, Jaloud Carthage, Joussour El Arab, Kaser, Khaddem, nafe'eh, Nar Shalgoda, Nahr Ennil, and Bosse de Salute. The Supreme Organizing Committee of the UAE President's Cup Series had earlier announced the 2025 race calendar, which includes 17 races across Europe, the UK, Turkey, Arab countries, the US, and Russia. The 2025 UAE President's Cup Series for Purebred Arabian Horses kicks off in Tunisia on April 20, setting the stage for a thrilling international tour. The action continues in Morocco on April 26, offering a prize of €250,000, followed by France on May 11 with an impressive €350,000 purse. The series then crosses the Atlantic to the United States on May 17, where a $200,000 prize is up for grabs. The momentum carries on with the Italian leg on May 18, presenting €300,000 in prize money, followed by Sweden on June 6 with €100,000. Germany hosts its round on July 6, offering €250,000, while the Netherlands welcomes competitors on August 3 with €100,000. Spain joins the calendar on August 15 with a €200,000 prize, ahead of Russia on August 30, offering $100,000. Belgium takes the spotlight on September 2 with €200,000, followed by Turkey on September 7 with $250,000 in prizes. England hosts one of the richest legs on September 13, with a remarkable £400,000 purse. The journey continues to Poland on September 28 with €200,000, then heads to Egypt on October 25 with Dhs500,000 in rewards. Libya follows closely on October 26, raising the stakes with Dhs1 million. The season concludes in Saudi Arabia in November, offering a generous prize of SAR1.5 million. Amir's Grand International Shooting Championship begins on Saturday
KUWAIT CITY, April 10, (KUNA): The Grand Annual International Shooting Championship of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah will commence this Saturday at the Kuwait Shooting Club, bringing together approximately 220 archers from 17 Arab and international nations. The seven-day event is poised to be one of the most significant sporting events in Kuwait. Duaij Al-Otaibi, Chairman of the Supreme Organizing Committee and President of the Kuwait Shooting Club, expressed on Thursday that Kuwait is honored to host the championship, which has become one of the largest and most prominent shooting events in the region and across Asia. He also extended his deepest gratitude to His Highness the Amir for his kind patronage of the event. This annual championship features competitions for both men and women in shotgun shooting and has established itself as a key sporting gathering for archery enthusiasts. Al-Otaibi noted the strong participation of international delegations, including the President and Secretary-General of the International Shooting Federation, as well as heads of national federations taking part in the tournament. All preparations have been completed for the event, with the Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad shooting fields at the Kuwait Shooting Club ready to host the competition. The opening ceremony will be attended by the representative of the sponsor, Governor of Mubarak Al-Kabeer Sheikh Sabah Bader Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. The competition will feature approximately 120 Kuwaiti archers across five different events. Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, officially signaled the start of the race. Mahmoud Abel, president of the Kuwait Sports for All Federation, also attended the event and was a member of the Supreme Organizing Committee for Kuwait Sports Day. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem participated in the cycling race for the second consecutive year, alongside former Minister Dawood Marafi. The event features a 20-kilometer cycling race, followed by a 5-kilometer walk, allowing participants to engage in a day of fitness and celebration. This year's race saw an impressive turnout, with approximately 20,000 male and female participants, including athletes with special needs, emphasizing inclusivity and community engagement in Kuwait's sports initiatives.
