Indian Solar Association to promote rooftop solar energy installations in houses

Efforts will be taken to install rooftop solar energy panels in two lakh houses in Tamil Nadu, said the Indian Solar Association Director C. Narasimhan. Mr. Narasimhan told The Hindu that there are just about 20,000 registrations from Tamil Nadu for the Prime Minister's Surya Ghar Yojana scheme. 'We have appealed to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to provide net metering facility for these connections soon.' The association will organise awareness campaigns and a conference inviting all the solar energy panel providers and banks. A modern house typically requires about 3 kW of rooftop solar panels, and the government subsidy for this will be ₹78,000. The remaining cost can be financed through a bank loan. If around two lakh houses adopt solar energy, there will be a significant reduction in energy consumption from the grid. Additionally, commercial establishments can also install rooftop solar systems, saving ₹4 to ₹4.5 per unit of power. The association will also promote the Kusum scheme among farmers, encouraging the use of solar energy for water pumping. Mr. Narasimhan said Tamil Nadu will soon allocate lands for setting up storage facilities for renewable energy at six locations in the State. The Central government gives subsidy for setting up the storage facilities. These storage centres will enable the State to avoid power disruptions during peak hours, he said.

India's power demand to grow 6-6.5% annually through FY2030, driven by EVs, data centres, green Hydrogen: Icra

India's power demand is projected to grow by 6.0–6.5 per cent annually over the next five years, driven by accelerating electric vehicle (EV) adoption, rapid expansion of data centres, and the development of green hydrogen projects, according to ICRA. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'These three segments are expected to contribute to 20–25 per cent of the incremental demand over the next five-year period from FY2026 to FY2030,' said Vikram V, Vice President & Co-Group Head - Corporate Ratings, ICRA, quoted by ANI. However, he also claimed that this rising demand for grid capacity could be partially offset by the increasing uptake of rooftop solar and off-grid solutions, aided by initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. The report highlights that the EV sector will see broad-based growth, led by three-wheelers, followed by two-wheelers, electric buses and passenger vehicles. For FY2026, ICRA expects a strong thermal plant load factor of 70 per cent, backed by a projected power demand growth of 5.0–5.5 per cent. Total power generation capacity is forecast to rise to 44 GW in FY2026, up from 34 GW in FY2024, with contributions from both renewable and thermal sources. 'The thermal segment is expected to add 9–10 GW capacity in FY2026, while the remaining capacity addition will primarily come from renewable energy,' the agency said. While renewables will continue to dominate capacity growth, ICRA noted a significant uptick in thermal projects under construction, which currently exceed 40 GW. The agency also observed that the expected FY2026 demand growth of 5.0–5.5 per cent is slightly below its GDP growth forecast of 6.5 per cent for the same period, attributing the gap to the anticipated early onset and above-average monsoon, which tends to dampen cooling and agricultural power demand.

Power demand to increase by 6-6.5% over next five years, says ICRA

ICRA attributes the growth in demand to greater adoption of electric vehicles and green hydrogen segments, and the expansion of power-hungry data centres Aman Sahu New Delhi India's energy demand is expected to grow in the range of 6–6.5 per cent over the next five years, ratings agency ICRA said on Wednesday. ICRA said that the growth in demand is attributable to the growing adoption of electric vehicles and green hydrogen segments, as well as the expansion of data centres, which require sizeable amounts of electricity to power their servers. "Over the next five years, ICRA expects the electricity demand to achieve a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 6–6.5 per cent, driven by the demand from rising adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), green hydrogen (GH), and the increase in data centre capacity," said Vikram V, vice president & co-group head (corporate ratings) at ICRA, in a webinar. These three segments are expected to contribute to 20–25 per cent of the incremental demand over the next five-year period from FY26 to FY30, he said. Vikram said that the demand for grid capacity is expected to slightly reduce due to more people using rooftop solar panels and off-grid projects, as the government is promoting clean energy generation schemes such as the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. The generation capacity expansion is projected to reach an all-time high of 44 GW in FY26, beating the record of 34 GW in FY25, with the overall installed power generation capacity reaching close to 520 GW by March 2026. On the other hand, as Business Standard reported on May 27, due to the early onset of monsoon in India, the power demand in the country this year has not taken off as expected, leading to excess stock with coal production companies in the week. The national grid has not seen aggregate demand soar beyond 220 GW even on the worst of days so far this summer. The softer demand for power has also kept the price of coal imports low. Even as India is pushing for renewable energy, ICRA, however, maintains a stable outlook for the thermal power segment.

2047 vision, ‘four-S' plan for infra: CM presents ‘Developed Delhi' roadmap at NITI Aayog meeting

Cleaning the Yamuna river, developing infrastructure, and providing tap water connections to every household are among the top priorities in the roadmap for a 'Developed Delhi', which was presented to NITI Aayog by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday. Delhi was among 24 states and seven union territories (UTs) that participated in the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, which serves as the apex public policy think tank of the Central government, at Bharat Mandapam. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'Looking ahead to 2047, the Chief Minister outlined a clear vision: access to nutritious food, clean drinking water, inclusive and quality education, universal healthcare, skill development, high-tech research, waste-free ecosystems, and heritage conservation. The Delhi government is actively pursuing these goals,' said the Chief Minister's office (CMO) in a statement. The Chief Minister stressed that top-quality public infrastructure is the foundation for holistic development, which the city government is pursuing through a 'four-S' approach: Scope, Scale, Speed, and Skill. 'Seamless connectivity and smart surveillance are central to redefining Delhi's urban identity,' said officials, quoting her. Taking a potshot at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Gupta, ahead of the meeting earlier in the day, said in a post on X , 'Today, after many years, we are going to represent Delhi in the Governing Council meeting of Niti Aayog. Due to the conduct of the previous irresponsible governments, the issue of Delhi's rights was not being raised in the commission meeting, but now, the double-engine (BJP) government is on track.' '..We will present our roadmap for a viksit (developed) Delhi for a developed India to the heads of all the states of the country. Today, we will also present the aspirations and expectations of the people of Delhi for the development of Delhi before the Niti Aayog,' she added. After the meeting, the CM said that her government's top priority is to clean Yamuna, enhance infrastructure, and provide direct tap water to all households. She thanked PM Modi for his full support and cooperation on this issue. Officials also said that the CM highlighted her vision for making Delhi pollution-free. Besides, the CM outlined the government's ongoing projects and its work in different sectors like implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, procurement of new electric buses under DEVI scheme, implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, PM Surya Ghar Yojana, installation of 40 STPs, and other key projects. On cleaning Yamuna, Gupta sought support from the Centre and neighbouring states to collectively restore the river's glory. The Chief Minister further announced that Delhi will soon host its first-ever 'Investor Summit' under the leadership of PM Modi, unlocking investment opportunities and placing Delhi firmly on the global investment map. The government also eyes developing a new tourism circuit and strengthening support for Start-up India and Stand-up India, two separate but related government initiatives in India focused on promoting entrepreneurship and economic growth, said officials. 'With the guidance of our visionary PM and support from NITI Aayog, we are not just building a clean, inclusive, and empowered Delhi by 2047, but also positioning it as a global model for urban governance,' the CM said. Meanwhile, in another post on X, she said, 'We are fully committed to establishing Delhi's role not only as a supporting but also as a pillar in realising the vision of a developed India. This is not merely a development plan but a national campaign towards fulfilling the dreams, possibilities, and building a strong India for the coming generations, and it is a matter of pride for all of us to be a part of it.' 'Delhi is now playing a leading role in development under the guidance of the Prime Minister,' she added.
