Is It 78th Or 79th Independence Day? All You Need To Know

Independence Day 2025: India gained freedom from British colonial rule after a long struggle on August 15, 1947. The day is remembered for the freedom fighters and the common Indians who coalesced together and managed to snatch back the country from the Britishers. On this day, the prime minister takes to the ramparts of the Red Fort and hoists the tricolour, followed by a rousing rendition of the national anthem and an address to the nation. People organise cultural programs and seminars to pay tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom. While India prepares to celebrate its next Independence Day, a familiar question has resurfaced: Is it the 78th or the 79th Independence Day? Is India Celebrating The 78th Or 79th Independence Day In 2024? The discussion centres on two assumptions -- whether the day can be counted from August 15, 1947, the day India gained independence, or from the day it celebrated its first anniversary one year later. India will be commemorating its 79th anniversary of gaining independence if we count from the day of independence. However, if we calculate from August 15, 1948, it is the 78th Independence Day. According to the official channels, it is indeed confirmed that India will be celebrating its 79th Independence Day. A letter by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), carried by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), has corroborated that the country will be celebrating its 79th Independence Day. "As India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today extended an invitation to all citizens to contribute their thoughts and ideas for his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15," the letter stated. As we approach this year's Independence Day, I look forward to hearing from my fellow Indians! What themes or ideas would you like to see reflected in this year's Independence Day speech? Share your thoughts on the Open Forums on MyGov and the NaMo App...… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) August 1, 2025 Independence Day Wishes My love for my nation is worthiness. My love for my people is endless. All I desire for my country is happiness. Let me be the first person to wish you a special happy Independence Day! Freedom is something that money can't buy, it's the result of the struggles of many Bravehearts. Let us honour them today and always. Happy Independence Day 2025 Freedom is the atmosphere in which humanity thrives. Breathe it in. A big salute to all those Bravehearts who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the nation. It is because of their bravery, we are enjoying a comfortable way of life today. Happy Independence Day.

Zero takers in Karnataka for PM-KUSUM's most lucrative solar scheme

While Components B and C have seen some implementation in Karnataka, progress remains uneven and far below sanctioned targets, according to a written statement made in the Lok Sabha by Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for new and renewable energy and power, in response to an unstarred question raised by MP Dr K Sudhakar. As of July 2025, Karnataka had been sanctioned 41,365 solar pumps under Component B, but only 2,388 have been installed. Under Component C (Feeder Level Solarisation), 6.28 lakh pumps were approved, yet only 23,133 have been solarised. Furthermore, no demand has been raised for individual pump solarisation under Component C—again indicating underutilization. Despite these challenges, certain districts stand out. Tumakuru leads the state with 6,160 grid-connected solar pumps, followed by Chikkaballapur (5,364) and Ramanagara (3,788). In contrast, major agricultural districts like Belagavi, Kalaburagi, and Mysuru have reported negligible adoption, revealing a lack of consistent engagement across the state. Compared nationally, Karnataka's performance is modest, with 23,761 farmers having benefited under PM-KUSUM. This number is significantly lower than states like Maharashtra (7.27 lakh farmers), Gujarat (1.95 lakh), and Rajasthan (1.56 lakh), which have actively tapped into the scheme's full potential. Even smaller states such as Goa have comparatively better coverage. Under PM-KUSUM, the Central Government provides 30% financial assistance for Components B and C, with options for higher subsidies in hilly and northeastern states. States may contribute an additional 30%, though implementation can proceed without it, leaving the rest to be covered by the farmer.

PIB Debunks Fake Claim That India May Suspend US Agreements Over Tariffs

Last Updated: The Press Information Bureau dismissed false claims that India is suspending agreements with the US. The Press Information Bureau's Fact Check unit on Sunday officially dismissed social media posts which falsely claimed, citing the Ministry of External Affairs, that India is considering suspending or reviewing bilateral agreements with the United States over 'hostile economic policies". The fact-check by the Press Information Bureau comes amid speculations over the state of India-US ties after the US administration under President Donald Trump imposed 25% tariff on Indian exports. The social media statement by PIB clarified that no such statement was issued and labeled the claims as misinformation. 'The External Affairs Ministry has not made any such statement. Stay alert and do not fall for misleading information. above is from Govt of India," the PIB social media post on X said. It also shared photos of the misleading post where some accounts were seen posting false information with respect to ties between Washington and New Delhi. This rebuttal comes amid escalating tensions over US tariff actions. The MEA earlier in the week reiterated that India remains in active negotiations with Washington over a trade deal and assured the public that diplomatic ties and economic engagements are intact and ongoing, unaffected by such rumours. On July 30, 2025, US President Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports, effective August 1, citing high Indian tariffs, restrictive trade barriers and India's continued energy and defense ties with Russia. This move sent immediate ripples through export and import sectors of both countries — particularly in the textiles, apparel, gems, jewellery and electronics sector – where exporters and importers fear the new duties could lead to widespread disruptions. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
