'Today, I'm more willing to put myself out there' Reflecting on how there's been a mindset shift post marriage, Randeep shared, 'I'm no longer the island (isolated person) I used to be. I can still be that island, but now there's always a bridge back to the mainland through Lin. I've become calmer, more open to new experiences and more sociable. Today, I'm more willing to put myself out there and be presentable. There have been great changes in my life, and I'm incredibly grateful to her. She's a spiritual person, and her calming influence has brought a lot of peace into my life. She's introduced me to a positive routine with fewer late nights, and it's definitely been beneficial,' said Randeep, who was recently seen playing the antagonist in Jaat, starring Sunny Deol. 'As an actor, there's often a lot of downtime, and that was a challenge for me when I shot for a film after Savarkar. I found myself restless in my vanity van with nothing to do. No difference playing hero or villain: Randeep Hooda
(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated May 12, 2025) Q. You've played the antagonist a few times, including in your latest film Jaat. What does it really take to be an effective villain? There is no difference with playing the hero or the villain. While I am used to doing a lot of prep for my roles, with this one, almost 90 per cent of the job is looking the part. Usually, the audience cheers for the hero but with Jaat, I have got so much love for Ranatunga (his character) that I am amazed. advertisement Q. You recently said that you want to direct more... I was an accidental director (on Swatantrya Veer Savarkar) but I then found that I have a flair for it. All my life, I've been co-conspiring with my directors for my part at least. What has also helped is that I've been a wildlife photographer for about eight years now, which has honed my sense of framing. I have a couple of stories that I've developed, both action films. Q. Boman Irani, who just directed his first film, took time off to study screenplay writing and skill up. Is that something you feel you would need to do as well? Not at all. In fact, for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, I also co-wrote the screenplay with Utkarsh Naithani and it just flew out of me. I didn't feel the need to get any other skill set at all. Maybe I was just born to do it (laughs). advertisement Q. Do you enjoy writing? I really do. Since the screenplay, I've been writing short stories in Hindi. They basically document our times. I write about Versova (a suburb in Mumbai) and the characters I have known. When you read a lot, you also want to write because your thoughts need an outlet. I did most of my writing after I broke my knee while horse riding. I have about 10-15 short stories written. A few more and I'll probably put them out there as a book. Weight loss story: Randeep Hooda's reveals how he lost 18 kilos in 28 days with... When it comes to physical transformation in Bollywood, actors usually have a very strict lifestyle. Depending on their role and the character, they have to go through a strict diet regimen and rigorous exercise. Whether it's bulking up for a character or shedding extra pounds, these actors have to push their bodies to fit the requirements. One such actor whose transformation created all the buzz is Randeep Hooda. Known for fully immersing himself in the roles and playing them like his second skin, Randeep has once again stunned his fans with his dramatic transformation of losing 18 kilograms in just 28 days for his character in Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (2024). For Randeep's transformation, he went for a more sustainable route of discipline and inner-fasting awareness instead of a fad diet. In a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, the Highway actor opened up about his intense transformation journey, revealing that the intention behind his transformation wasn't to promote a health trend but instead it stay authentic to his role. Speaking more about his weight loss journey, Randeep emphasises the benefits of fasting. He shares, 'There is nothing better than fasting.' The 48-year-old actor shares that fasting can help our digestive system get the much-needed break. He says that our digestive system is always working day and night, which gives it very little time to heal and rest, and since most health issues stem from our gut, fasting is a great way to reset. While highlighting the benefits of short-term fasting, Randeep also shares that this technique might not work for everyone. He always shares that fasting for 1 or 2 days can boost your energy level and make you feel and look younger in the long run. Randeep also shares that while there are many types of fasts now, he stressed the importance of only consuming water, black coffee, green tea, and black tea during fasting periods and strictly warned against lemon water or coconut water. The goal, he said, is to keep insulin levels stable and avoid anything that could disrupt the fasting state. The longer one can go without consuming calories, the more healing and health benefits the body can unlock. The actor also reveals that during his dramatic transformation, he 'stopped eating and drinking' for an extended time, which helped him to achieve his desired look but also took a toll on his health, he admitted candidly. But despite this, he stood by his decision of weight loss to stay true to his character. This isn't the first time that Randeep's fitness and discipline have been applauded. Before this, for Sarbjit (2016), Randeep's dedication was appreciated and once again his dramatic weight loss of losing 18 kilos in 28 days has proved his commitment and dedication, not just for fitness but also towards his acting.
