Experts push for critical thinking in textbooks
Educationists, scholars, and writers stressed the importance of including lessons in school textbooks that contribute to the moral development, knowledge enhancement, and critical thinking skills of students during the first meeting of the curriculum review committee. The meeting was held on Wednesday to evaluate educational textbooks on the directives of Sindh's Minister for Education Syed Sardar Ali Shah. Attendees also emphasised the need for content to reflect effective language use, social responsibility, collective thinking, and rational perspectives. A proposal was made to develop guiding principles to achieve these goals, noting that Students' Learning Outcomes (SLOs) should be aligned with the text. The meeting was chaired by Sindh Textbook Board Chairman Parvez Ahmed Baloch. After reviewing the 12th-grade Sindhi textbook, experts shared their observations and suggested revisions in line with contemporary educational needs. Writer Jami Chandio noted that improving textbooks is a continuous process that must be sustained. Although he pointed out thematic imbalances in the current 12th-grade Sindhi textbook, he praised its content quality as superior to that of textbooks from other provinces.

Deal signed for speed learning centres for under-privileged
The Sindh government has signed an agreement to establish 500 non-formal education centers under a public-private partnership. Under the directives of the Sindh Education Minister, Syed Sardar Ali Shah, the Accelerated Learning Program aims to help 15,000 out-of-school children complete their primary education within 30 months. A ceremony was held to formalise the agreement, attended by the Secretary of School Education & Literacy Department, Zahid Ali Abbasi, as well as the Chief Executive Advisor of Curriculum Wing, Dr Fauzia Khan, and others. Secretary Abbasi stated that non-formal education centers would be established specifically in underprivileged areas. In the first phase, five districts with relatively lower literacy rates, including Jacobabad, Kashmore, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, and Umerkot, have been selected. He emphasised that Sindh is the first province in Pakistan to develop a formal curriculum for non-formal education and urged partner organisations to prioritise girls' participation in the program as well. After completing the primary course, students will receive assistance in securing admission to elementary school (class 6), ensuring continuity in their education. The program is being implemented with the help of NGOs and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) to ensure efficiency, skill development, and transparency. The Directorate of Literacy & Non-Formal Education (DL&NFE) also signed agreements with 10 partner organisations who pledged their full cooperation in executing the project.
