RCB Win IPL 2025 Reactions: Tendulkar, de Villiers, Gayle & cricket world celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL title

RCB IPL 2025 Title Win Reactions: Royal Challengers Bengaluru handed Punjab Kings a 6-run defeat in the Indian Premier League 2025 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday to win their first IPL trophy as the league got a new champion in RCB. The Rajat Patidar-led RCB was one notch above another trophy-less side, PBKS, which failed to chase 191 on a tricky surface. Virat Kohli's hunger and wait for this elusive trophy also ended with what will be a famous win in Ahmedabad. RCB, en route to the historic title, also became the only team in the history of the IPL to have won all away games in a season. They finished second behind Punjab in the standings and beat them in the first qualifier by eight wickets before beating them again in the finals. Since RCB won their first IPL trophy, reactions from the cricketing and the whole sporting fraternity have been pouring in. Here are some of the reactions: A post shared by Virat Kohli (@ A post shared by AB de Villiers (@abdevilliers17) Congratulations to @RCBTweets on their first-ever IPL title. Jess Jonassen ends big week by upstaging Perry in WPL

Jess Jonassen is providing plenty of reminders to Australia's selectors that she's still a cricketing force at 32 as she delivered a third match-winning performance in five days for the rampant Delhi Capitals in India's Women's Premier League. The spinning allrounder, who's been surplus to requirements for Australia over the past year, appears to be reinventing herself, having been shoved up the batting order to No.3 in Delhi's ever-improving push for the title. On Saturday, she cracked an unbeaten 61 not out at first drop as the Capitals booked their place in the knockout stages of the tournament with a second-straight nine-wicket win in successive days, this time over champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Footwork on point 🔥Jess Jonassen displays her fine form with a lovely strike! 🚀Updates ▶️ | #RCBvDC | @DelhiCapitals — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) March 1, 2025 On Tuesday, the rejuvenated Jonassen had made exactly the same score in the win over Gujarat and on Friday, had taken the key wickets in her 3-25 which sank Mumbai, both displays winning her the player-of-the-match award. This time, she probably would have made it a hat-trick if not for the blistering performance by her batting partner Shafali Verma, who cracked a spectacular unbeaten 80 off 43 balls as they shared an unbeaten second-wicket stand of 146. The Ellyse Perry-inspired champions, RCB, once again left their fans feeling short-changed with a fourth successive home defeat in Bengaluru. Not that Perry let them down. As usual, the allrounder did her brilliant best to keep the faithful happy at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after RCB has been inserted by Delhi skipper Meg Lanning, as she proved the mainstay of their 5-147 with an unbeaten 60 off 47 balls, featuring three sixes and three fours. Perry is now the holder of the orange cap as the season's top scorer with 295 runs. It was also her record-equalling eighth WPL half-century, as she went past Lanning in their continuing ding-dong battle to be the highest all-time run-scorer in the competition. She now has 895, 48 more than Lanning, who had a rare failure in reply when who else but Perry should leap up to dismiss her for just two with a sharp catch at mid-on off Renuka Singh. The Points Table leader add the '𝙌' against them 👀The Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals continue their winning streak 👏Predict the other 2️⃣ teams for the playoffs ✍#TATAWPL | @DelhiCapitals — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) March 1, 2025 But Jonassen and Shafali made light work of the chase, with the Australian left-hander, who'd been batting in the lower middle-order for most of the tournament, evidently relishing the move up the order as she bashed nine fours and a six off the 38 balls she faced. "Jess has done an excellent job, came in and played beautifully," said Lanning, whose side will definitely be in the playoffs after they moved on to 10 points, four clear of the chasing pack. As for Jonassen now nailing down her elevated place in the order, Lanning smiled: "She's certainly keeping her hand up to keep doing it."

Lanning leads Aussie super show for Delhi in WPL

Meg Lanning has regained her position as the Women's Premier League all-time leading run-scorer with a masterful knock for Delhi Capitals on a day when two of her Australian teammates shared the glory. Jess Jonassen even eclipsed captain Lanning with her player-of-the-match, three-wicket performance while Annabel Sutherland took one of the best catches the WPL has witnessed as the table-topping Capitals overpowered Mumbai Indians by nine wickets in Bengaluru. Lanning, who'd just been overtaken by another Aussie great Ellyse Perry at the top of the WPL's all-time run-scoring charts, regained her position at the summit in supreme fashion on Friday, easing her way to an unbeaten 60 off 49 balls that ensured her side moved two points clear atop the table. A #TATAWPL Classic 🤩Annabel Sutherland plucks one out of thin air 😮Is this the best catch of the season yet? 🤔Updates ▶️ #TATAWPL | #DCvMI | @DelhiCapitals — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 28, 2025 Reaching her second half-century of the season off 40 deliveries, this was Lanning back at her flowing best after a few recent struggles, with the matchwinning knock taking her all-time run total to 845, 10 clear of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Perry. The 32-year-old's eighth half-century over the three editions of the competition is now also a record, and there should be plenty more fireworks when she does battle with her old international teammate Perry again in Saturday's Capitals-RCB clash in Bengaluru. Lanning's innings, aided by fellow opener Shafali Verma's bludgeoning 43 off 28, ensured Delhi raced to their modest target on 1-124 with 33 balls remaining, which will be a boon to their net run-rate. 🔙 to 🔙 For an excellent spell of 3/25, Jess Jonassen wins her second consecutive Player of the Match award 👏🙌Scorecard ▶️ | #DCvMI | @DelhiCapitals | @JJonassen21 — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 28, 2025 As she watched her skipper stroke nine boundaries, an admiring Jonassen admitted afterwards that she felt that she didn't really deserve the player of the match award and that it sould have gone to Lanning. But her 3-25, which featured the key dismissals of India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, trapped leg before for 24, and star England allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt, sharply caught and bowled for 18, was a real match turner, continuing the discarded Australian international's great form in India. It was the 32-year-old's second straight player-of-the-match accolade after her unbeaten 61 steered Delhi to victory over Gujarat on Tuesday. Sutherland, Australia's player of the moment, got in on the act too, sprinting hard for 30 metres from long on before hurling herself forward to take a stupendous catch to see the back of New Zealand ace Amelia Kerr for 17. "Just glad to hold on to it. Hopefully ticked off my high speed numbers there," said Sutherland, whose mum, in the crowd to watch her heroics, remained quite unemotional. "She's watched her fair share of cricket - it's good to have her here," Sutherland smiled. "That was an incredible catch - and crucial for us," said Lanning, who was thrilled the way young Indian spinner Minnu Mani's 3-17 also did much to keep Mumbai down to 9-123 after she had asked them to bat. Sutherland (1-21 off four) also took a key wicket of her own, getting the in-form opener Hayley Matthews to miscue one straight into the hands of Shafali after she'd moved ominously on to 22 off 25.

Aussie Grace Harris predicts her landmark WPL hat-trick

Grace Harris has become the first Australian to take a hat-trick in India's Women's Premier League - and the irrepressible batting allrounder even predicted it. The UP Warriorz star had endured a pretty poor start to the WPL by her fizzing standards, but all that changed on Saturday as she finished off the Delhi Capitals innings with three wickets in three balls to seal their 33-run win in Bengaluru. "I think I manifested this," Harris beamed afterwards. First win of the season with a hat-trick 😇@UPWarriorz are the first team to successfully defend a total in #TATAWPL 2025 🥳Scorecard ▶ #DCvUPW — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 22, 2025 "I was joking when I was asked what my plans would be in the bowlers' meeting and I said I would do this and that, and would get a hat-trick. "We have these casual meetings, but they all started laughing when I got it. "Now I am going to manifest something with the bat because I am a batting allrounder, but my bowling has been better than my batting of late." The match was effectively already done and dusted at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium when Harris came on to bowl her third over, the 20th and last of Delhi's innings. First ball, she got rid of Niki Prasad with a short one that the teenager hit straight to Chinelle Henry at deep midwicket, then she couldn't help laughing as Arundhati Reddya hit her next delivery, a rubbishy full-toss, straight to cover. Next delivery, Minnu Mani struck the ball straight back to her and though Harris nearly spilled it, she managed to hold on, after a little juggle, to end the match with a piece of history. She's only the third player in WPL annals to achieve a hat-trick, following Issy Wong in 2023's inaugural edition and Deepti Sharma last year. 🆆.🆆.🆆 to give @UPWarriorz their first 🆆 of the season 😉👌🎥🔽 Watch Grace Harris' triple treat as she secures the first hat-trick of #TATAWPL 2025 🔥 #DCvUPW — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 22, 2025 Harris, who finished with figures of 4-15, had earlier dismissed Australian ace Annabel Sutherland, a key wicket as Meg Lanning's Delhi never got to grips with having to chase down 9-177 from the Warriorz, eventually succumbing for 144. Lanning, the WPL's all-time leading run-scorer, was dismissed for just five, the same score as her compatriots and teammates Sutherland and Jess Jonassen. Lanning had earlier put the Warriorz in to bat, and it had looked a good decision as they slumped to 6-89 in the 14th over, with Harris contributing just two off eight balls. But a useful 24 off 23 balls from another Aussie, Tahlia McGrath, was followed up by an explosive contribution at No.8 from Jamaican big-hitter Henry, who blasted 62 off just 23 balls, with eight sixes. Spinner Jonassen was her usual impressive self with the ball, taking 4-31 off her four overs.

Gardner heroics in vain as Perry launches WPL with win

Ash Gardner and Beth Mooney both cracked superb half-centuries but it was their fellow Australian half-centurion Ellyse Perry who ended up trumping them in a scintillating opening to the Women's Premier League in India. The trio of Aussie luminaries all shone with their fifties, and Gardner's first knock as Gujarat Giants' captain in Friday's WPL launch match in Vadodara proved particularly special as she smote eight sixes in her blistering 39-ball 79 not out. Gardner also took two wickets in an exceptional first over as she looked on course to lead her side to victory over defending champs Royal Challengers Bengaluru, only for Perry to lead the fightback and Indian star Richa Ghosh to finish the job dazzlingly as RCB launched their defence with a six-wicket win. 6️⃣6️⃣6️⃣ 🚀#GG captain Ashleigh Gardner flexing her muscles with a hat-trick of sixes 💪💥She also brings up her FIFTY off just 25 👉 #TATAWPL | #GGvRCB — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 14, 2025 "Pretty flattening to be honest," admitted a dejected Gardner, whose side, despite her heroics, were let down by poor fielding after the Giants had scored 5-201, leaving RCB having to pull off a record WPL chase to win. "Two-hundred was probably only a par score and we needed to bowl really well. It was not to be unfortunately. We dropped some chances, which hurt us in the end." The most crucial miss came when Ghosh was dropped in the deep by Simran Shaikh as she hoicked her first ball off Priya Mishra, a full toss, to deep midwicket. It was a fatal let-off as Ghosh went on to play a stupendous innings, 64no off just 27 balls, to lead RCB to a win with nine balls to spare. Gardner, who had picked up the key wickets of Smriti Mandhana and Danni Wyatt-Hodge with just her second and sixth balls at the top of the order, was later particularly roughly treated in her second over by Ghosh, who smashed her for 4, 6, 4, 4 and 4 - 22 in all, plus one wide. The India wicketkeeper hit seven fours and four sixes and was given impressive support from Kanika Ahuja (30no off 13) as the pair led the champions home. A power-packed FIFTY 🔥Watch Ellyse Perry's fighting fifty 🔽🎥#TATAWPL | #GGvRCB — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 14, 2025 Earlier, Perry, back after her hip injury suffered in the Ashes Test, had set the tone in RCB's chase with a 34-ball 57, which featured two sixes and was facilitated by her being dropped twice. The great allrounder couldn't bowl for RCB as she recovers from her injury, and they missed her excellence as Mooney (56 off 42) hit her fourth WPL half-century, which included three successive fours off the spin of compatriot Georgia Wareham, who proved hugely expensive with her 1-50 off three overs. Gardner, who's taken over the captaincy to let Mooney concentrate on her wicketkeeping and batting, put on a spectacular show, depositing three successive sixes off Prema Rawat - straight, over deep midwicket and deep square leg - before getting to 50 off 25 balls. Three more sixes followed in an over from VJ Joshitha as she finished with eight maximums in total, equalling the WPL record in a single innings that New Zealander Sophie Devine recorded in 2023.
