Jess Jonassen ends big week by upstaging Perry in WPL

Yahoo01-03-2025
Jess Jonassen is providing plenty of reminders to Australia's selectors that she's still a cricketing force at 32 as she delivered a third match-winning performance in five days for the rampant Delhi Capitals in India's Women's Premier League.
The spinning allrounder, who's been surplus to requirements for Australia over the past year, appears to be reinventing herself, having been shoved up the batting order to No.3 in Delhi's ever-improving push for the title.
On Saturday, she cracked an unbeaten 61 not out at first drop as the Capitals booked their place in the knockout stages of the tournament with a second-straight nine-wicket win in successive days, this time over champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

On Tuesday, the rejuvenated Jonassen had made exactly the same score in the win over Gujarat and on Friday, had taken the key wickets in her 3-25 which sank Mumbai, both displays winning her the player-of-the-match award.
This time, she probably would have made it a hat-trick if not for the blistering performance by her batting partner Shafali Verma, who cracked a spectacular unbeaten 80 off 43 balls as they shared an unbeaten second-wicket stand of 146.
The Ellyse Perry-inspired champions, RCB, once again left their fans feeling short-changed with a fourth successive home defeat in Bengaluru.
Not that Perry let them down. As usual, the allrounder did her brilliant best to keep the faithful happy at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after RCB has been inserted by Delhi skipper Meg Lanning, as she proved the mainstay of their 5-147 with an unbeaten 60 off 47 balls, featuring three sixes and three fours.
Perry is now the holder of the orange cap as the season's top scorer with 295 runs.
It was also her record-equalling eighth WPL half-century, as she went past Lanning in their continuing ding-dong battle to be the highest all-time run-scorer in the competition.
She now has 895, 48 more than Lanning, who had a rare failure in reply when who else but Perry should leap up to dismiss her for just two with a sharp catch at mid-on off Renuka Singh.

But Jonassen and Shafali made light work of the chase, with the Australian left-hander, who'd been batting in the lower middle-order for most of the tournament, evidently relishing the move up the order as she bashed nine fours and a six off the 38 balls she faced.
"Jess has done an excellent job, came in and played beautifully," said Lanning, whose side will definitely be in the playoffs after they moved on to 10 points, four clear of the chasing pack.
As for Jonassen now nailing down her elevated place in the order, Lanning smiled: "She's certainly keeping her hand up to keep doing it."

Stefon Diggs already becoming ‘pain in the posterior' for Patriots with Week 1 status still unclear

The Stefon Diggs experience reportedly isn't going well in New England. Shortly after a tense exchange Thursday with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel over the star receiver's Week 1 availability, NBC Sports Boston's Phil Perry shed a bit more light on a new marriage that's already on shaky ground. 'There are little signs that he's just becoming a bit of a pain in the posterior,' Perry said of Diggs when discussing Vrabel's outburst during the press conference on 'Quick Slants.' 'For Mike Vrabel to sort of have to be [Diggs'] public relations assistant and tell us what he really meant in his commentary to a member of the national media, I don't know if that irks Mike Vrabel or if he's just looking to go back and forth with somebody in the media.' New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs (8) reacts after catching a pass during a joint NFL football training camp with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025, in Eagan, Minn. AP Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the Patriots in free agency after suffering a torn ACL last October when he played for the Texans. This week, the four-time Pro Bowler said he feels 'great' and 'we'll see about Week 1' during an appearance on the 'Scoop City' podcast, leaving fans and media to wonder if he will be on the field when the Patriots host the Raiders on Sept. 7. Dealing with Diggs may already not be worth it for the franchise, according to Perry. 'It all sort of adds up to, there's a lot going on with this guy for a guy who doesn't look like a No. 1 receiver anymore,' Perry said. New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs (8) walks to the podium to speak to the media after minicamp held in the WIN Field House at Gillette Stadium. Eric Canha-Imagn Images On NBC Sports Boston's 'Early Edition,' Perry echoed the same sentiment after being asked if Diggs is worth the 'headache.' 'How severe a headache is it? Because if we're talking a migraine, if it turns into a migraine, I'm gonna say no. I just don't think he's a No. 1 receiver at this point in time,' he said. 'Let's rephrase that: If he's a headache, in my opinion, not worth it. He's a No. 2 at this point in his career. I don't think he's going to be a thousand-yard receiver.' During the press conference on Thursday, Vrabel didn't address Diggs' comments specifically, but he noted that the veteran pass-catcher has 'been out here almost every day.' 'I'm excited of where he's at and we'll see when Week 1 comes, but he's going to practice today,' Vrabel said. 'Hopefully, he helps us in the red zone, but we can't predict the future about Week 1. I just know he's going to be out there today, and he works hard and he cares, which are two important things.'

Mike Perry vs. Jeremy Stephens booked for BKFC 82 headliner

BKFC is bringing the violence to Prudential Center. Former UFC standouts and current undefeated bareknuckle stars Mike Perry and Jeremy Stephens will throw down at BKFC 82 on Oct. 4 in Newark, N.J. BKFC president David Feldman announced the news Wednesday on "The Ariel Helwani Show." The fight will be for the BKFC King of Violence title, and will be contested at 175 pounds. Perry (5-0) takes the gloves off once again and competes for the first time since his (traditional) boxing loss to Jake Paul in July 2024. The loss was his first combat sports defeat since his last UFC fight in 2021. Perry has become one of bareknuckle's biggest stars over the past few years, piling up wins over Julian Lane, Michael Page, Luke Rockhold, Eddie Alvarez, and Thiago Alves. Stephens (3-0) returns to bareknuckle following a one-fight return stint in the UFC. The promotion brought Stephens back, in a rare move, to fight in front of his home state crowd in Des Moines in May. Stephens lost a back-and-forth battle against Mason Jones. The bout was his first in MMA since 2022 and his first in the UFC since 2021. To date, Stephens has bareknuckle wins over Jimmie Rivera, Bobby Talyor, and Eddie Alvarez. The current BKFC 82 lineup includes:
